    back of Autoweek on Cayenne

"I was on the phone all day with Dearborn. The power went out in the design studios. I was getting frantic calls all morning: 'J, the clays are melting! The clays are melting! Everything is starting to look like Porsche Cayennes!'"

-Ford design group VP J Mays, who authorized the use of generators to cool down his models.

Re: back of Autoweek on Cayenne

I really have a stupid question as a loyal Porsche customer and enthusiast: why the hell did Porsche go for such a conservative and boring design for the Cayenne? The technical part is without doubt a masterpiece, even if the weight sucks. But the design...ouch.

Re: back of Autoweek on Cayenne

yep, you know you've hit rock bottom when american car designers are making jokes about your design!

Re: back of Autoweek on Cayenne

    That is funny.

Re: back of Autoweek on Cayenne

Take it from someone who has first hand experience. The Cayenne gets more compliments than any car I have owned with the exception of the 360 Spider.

The public reaction is vastly different from envious car manufacturers and know it all car enthusiast.

"The Cayenne gets more compliments than any car I have owned with the exception of the 360 Spider"

so does the Pontiac Aztec, but i noticed you don't have one :-)

Re: back of Autoweek on Cayenne

You've overheard a compliment about the Aztec!!!?? The only positive thing to be said about that car is that they WILL stop making it one day.

Re: back of Autoweek on Cayenne

I have the same experience with compliments about the Cayenne. Complete strangers are coming up to me all the time to compliment me on the car and ask about it. Usually they have seen an ad or heard about it. They come running out of shops even, to exclaim with big eyes "Wow, is that your car? Is that the Cayenne? Wow! That is sharp!" It's embarrassing sometimes.

These are not auto enthusiast though, which I guess I am. As a known gearhead I will admit to finding the sagging clay imagery painfully accurate. As RC said, Ouch! I think Porsche designers were watching too many Craftsman Truck Series races. An SUV should look like it can go off-road, whether it can or not. This means it should be visually up off the ground. Porsche made a vehicle that can go off-road quite well but looks like it's glued to the pavement.

Well, I am preferring to think of the styling as quirky and enjoying the performance of the vehicle. And to the extent that the styling is plain, Porsche wanted something that would replace the Tahoe's in 911 owners garage's so I can see why they did not go in the direction of, say, the FX-45.

BTW, as I have said before, the black lower body moldings on the S contribute to the visual lowering of the Cayenne and I had arranged with the dealer to have those painted body color. When the car finally came the body shop balked because of the flexibility of the panels and their concern that the paint would not stick. I was at a PCA function at the dealership last night and the sales manager brought me one of those panels the body shop had been experimenting on. They used a new flexible one step paint and had tried a dull finish like the Turbo uses and a shinier one, more like the body finish. I tried it out and was pretty impressed. It was very flexible and looked great. I am to take the car in soon to have that done and I will post photos and more details on that paint if I can get them. I don't know for certain what the cost will be. The dealer and body shop came up with an estimate of $700 and included that with the purchase. I will try to get a real world estimate from the body shop in case anyone else is interested in this.

Re: back of Autoweek on Cayenne

I would say $700 to paint all the black areas below which include front lower bumper, sides, and back lower bumper is a fantastic price. I was quoted $1700 dollars for the same thing becasue the shop said it is very labor intensive and involves taking off the front and rear bumper to paint. Please let me know when you get a more difenite price .

    Regards,

    Harv
