not the well-known flat six smoke cloud

i noticed that McKenna had overfilled the oil on the CPO-warranteed 02 C4S i bought last saturday (oil gauge pegged high). checked dipstick but it wasn't clear by how much it was overfilled. so i foolishly(?) assumed "ok, dealer knows best" and ignored it. figured if they were over by a half-quart then it's likely benign.

    so...no problems...until last night.

drove it moderately aggressively for the first time, parked it hot for about 10 minutes, upon restart experienced a mildly alarming mechanical sound upon turning the ignition (not like usual), and then the most humungous cloud of bluish oil smoke you've ever seen blow out of a car...far more than the small puffs that flat sixes are known for. lasted for maybe a minute or so while car idled and my blood pressure sky rocketed...then all settled down to normal again, no check-engine lights, all seemed fine. drove home, no further issues.

so anyhow, apparently the combo of being overfilled with oil and a few hard turns, hard braking sessions, and somehow oil got sloshed into some place where it ought naught to be.

anyone have a good guess as to exactly what did happen, and would there be any damage as a result? fouled O2 sensors? fouled cats? fouled plugs?

i will try to borrow someone's top-sider oil extractor and correct the bozo dealer's screw-up. then just wait to see if it ever happens again. if it does happen again, then the problem is apparently something else entirely.

Re: not the well-known flat six smoke cloud

I wouldn't worry about it at all--happens all the time at track events. They basically say to be about a half quart low on the track so that doesn't happen, but it's really no big deal. To prevent it in the future, after driving hard just let the car sit idling for 3-5 minutes. That'll give it time for the oil to settle, and you will minimize/eliminate the oil cloud. If anything did happen, you'd definitely get a CEL, or some other warning message, and the car would definitely have not returned to normal. Don't worry!!

Re: not the well-known flat six smoke cloud

Hey Geoff! Good to see you on Rennteam again.

I guess I won't see you at Breckenridge this year. Karl is hosting the Cayenne gathering again and inviting Land Rovers this time!

Re: not the well-known flat six smoke cloud

I thought you were supposed to keep the oil full on non dry sump cars to prevent oil starvation in long high G turns, particularly with "R" tires. If your track has a long high G turn try to glance at the oil pressure gauge to make sure it doesn't dip or flicker. The noise you hear on startup may be the cam chain rattling until the tensioner builds oil pressure. It could be normal or may be a leaking check valve in the tensioner.

Re: not the well-known flat six smoke cloud

Hey, GM, how's it going? No offroading for me this year--I'm trying to keep it on the track as much as possible! In fact, I'll be heading down your way at the end of the month for a DE at TWS in College Station. I saw Karl drive by on the tollway a few weeks ago; he still has that spare tire on the roof! Well, say hi to everyone there for me, and get a couple of wheels off the ground!

    Geoff.

Re: not the well-known flat six smoke cloud

i borrowed a friend's "top-sider" oil extractor, removed about 1 quart of oil, now the oil gauge reads at exactly the full level (i.e. the very top oil level bar is not lit).

so, we shall see if SmokyJoe does his oil cloud trick again

Re: not the well-known flat six smoke cloud

Wow, 1 qt overfill is a lot!!! Like was said above, just keep an eye on that oil pressure gauge, and as long as it's up there, you're fine--

    Geoff.
