    Re: 997 GT3

    once again:

    Quote:
Porsche is tight-lipped on the power source of the latest GT3, but indications are it will pack a new 3.8-litre engine based on that used in the 911 Carrera S. With lightweight internals and unique engine mapping, it is designed to rev to over 8000rpm and punch out around 400bhp in production trim, topping the old GT3's 3.6-litre powerplant by 25bhp and the newly introduced Carrera S by 50bhp.

sounds to me more like a carrera S with powerkit than what the GT3 used to be...

real dry sump lubrication is a must!

    Re: 997 GT3

If its not dry sump, then its not a GT3, and is a big loss. 996 GT3 is an amazing car, but the margin on profitability is wider on wet sump lubricant engine.
If Porsche releases the GT3 in wet sump form, I won't buy it, and neither will many others who are potential buyers.

    Re: 997 GT3

If its not a dry sump, then its not a GT3 anymore. I still believe it will be dry sump for many reasons and mags are clueless...

Totally agree....such a bastardized 997GT3 would be too similar to 997S w/X51, -20mm chassis and aero kit....

    Re: 997 GT3

there is still the possibility they increas the gt3 engine to 3.8 liters, isnt there? so they would be able to get more power and reliability.

    Re: 997 GT3

My guess is that it may be a 3.8l but from the 996GT3 engine, just like the 3.8l was derived from the 3.6l of the 996C2.
I don't see how they can not have a dry sump on the GT3, the only advantage is that the 997S engine is cheaper but Porsche already charges more for the GT3 to compensate for the more expensive engine, but the disadvantages are much much greater; GT3 will no longer be able to use slicks, GT3Cup will no longer be derived from the street GT3 version since it will have a different engine, the similarity with a -20mm 997S with powerkit will be ridiculous, the GT3 fans and prospective owners will cringe at the idea, etc.

If you ask me, there is no way it will not be derived form the GT3 dry sump block...

    Re: 997 GT3

    Hold on.
There is a 997GT3 Cup. They MUST make a 997GT3, for homologation purposes, and i suppose the street GT3 can't have a different engine than the race GT3 (again, homologation rules).
I don't think they're racing a wet-sump engine, so i say it's pretty safe to assume that the GT3 (street) will have a dry-sump one. Maybe a drysump variant of the one on the Carrera S?

    Re: 997 GT3

guess you are right. if they have to use the same engine, there is no way they could not use the gt3 engine in the 3.6 format (with dry sump). therefore we are stuck with that engine and 400 hp.
anybody an exper on the gt rules??

    Good point Brunner,
    Guys,
Also remember that this comes from journalists, these guys are liars and have no scrupules whatsoever when it comes to scoops.
It wouldn't surprise me if they get some infos from forums like ours.
Remember all the crap CAR has published in the past?
    997 with a flat 8.
New modena with a V10, etc etc etc...
Take it with a grain of salt.
Honestly, I have no idea what the new GT3/Turbo engine will be based on, my guess is just that the new GT3 will be around 400 hp.

Exactly. Thats what I meant with the problem of the street GT3 not being derived form the Cup for the first time, i.e. if they made a wet sump GT3, they wouold have to make a small production GT3RS or something with the dry sump for homologation, and this wouldn't make sense.

they do not need a GT3 for homologation of the GT3 cup! it's porsches own race series! they can race with anything if they want to.

it's different with ALMS and FIA GT, but there's no 997 in the 2005 season (yet). they are racing with the 996 RSR wich was introduced last year and homolgated by the 996 GT3 RS.
