Whats the worst and best bit about your car?

I change my car quite a lot and had the pleasure of some different and interesting cars on the drive, but I always find something wrong with them. I like my cars to drive well and be practical, which is more difficult for other manufactures to pull off; Porsche is the only one that ticks all the boxes for me so far. Nothings prefect though, so what would you change and what do you rate about your car?

    I'll start.

I like a lot about the Cayman, the wings mirror, the overall shape and the handling. I'm also impressed with the PSM which lets you have fun and doesn't intervene early, but is there if you need it. It's easily the best safety net I've experienced on any car.

I don't like the lack of mid range torque and think the interior could be better for the money. Audi do a better job imo.

    Anyone else?

Lets so how this goes down

Re: Whats the worst and best bit about your car?

I think the style of the Cayman is outstanding... I've lowered mine and many people say it looks like a race car... Stock there is a lack of mid-range torque and I totally agree about the interior...

Overall I like my Cayman S... I'll like it even more after the turbo is installed this spring... 510hp will be more like it...

Re: Whats the worst and best bit about your car?

The Cayman S ticks just about every box for me apart from being Pounds4000 to expensive

Funny you should say that - yesterday I popped into my local Audi dealer to have a peek at the new TT, just to see. And the first thing I noticed was the lack of leather on the doors and elsewhere. Seats were quite nice though. Once you have leather everywhere, anything without feels like a Ford Focus to me... but other than that the TT felt more solid than the Boxster, but much heavier. More like a Golf coupe. Audi do their on-board computer better though. The Porsche one is a tad basic.

Re: Whats the worst and best bit about your car?

I see nothing wrong with the interior. Plenty of space in there. Except for all those little buttons on the PCM, everything is functional exactly where its supposed to be.

Some ppl complain about a harsh ride with 19"s but we dont see that ... especially if you come from a lowered MINI cooper ... now THAT is a harsh ride on your back!

That sounds like an iffy proposition on an M96 wet sump motor. Those motors are not designed for that kind of power (nor is the gearbox and halfshafts)...

Re: Whats the worst and best bit about your car?

RE: Turbo - 510bhp? I'll believe it when I see it! Cooling issues as well due to engine placement?..

Going back to the instrument layout, a UK mag (AutoCar or AutoExpress - one or the other) did an article about one of the traffic research labs doing experiments on how confusing car intrumentation is, and specifically tested how long it took to complete a specific set of tasks while on the move. Porsche came top, oddly enough. So I guess the controls must be reasonable ergonomic!

Re: Whats the worst and best bit about your car?

I would definately do the Mantis sump upgrade when the turbo is installed... The system is being track tested this winter in the south... I'll wait for the results before committing...

Aside from the dry sump itself, Porsche's dry sump motors are MUCH stronger in many ways. I'm not sure you can modify an M96 to the necessary strength level to sustain >500hp reliably without spending ALOT of money on all the engine internals (assuming the case itself is up to the task)...

For new TT you can chose only leather seats, or full leather package - you get leather on the doors, center console...

Maybe I only saw a base model then. I guess I should read the brochure better!

Interesting that you mention this - couple of weeks ago a similar test has been conducted in Germany. Porsche gained 2nd place (out of 10 cars, if I recall correctly). The winner was a 15 y/o MB 190 (the only old car tested - just to show how simple it has been to operate a car 15 years ago)
The test drivers' comments about Porsche: yes, there is quite a number of switches and knobs, but once you've "learned" them, they are quite intuitive to operate and the ergonomy is very good.
BTW worst performer of the test was the actual MB S-class - almost scary how much time it took to fulfill some tasks

Maybe that's the reason, why RUF is using a supercharged 3.8 N/A engine (with Porsche's "integrated" dry sump) for it's RK Coupé Power output: 440 hp, claimed acc-times: 0-100 km/h 4.3 sec, 0-200 km/h 13.0 sec.
Saw this car (limited production: 49 units) in a TV show recently - intoxicating sound, but it looked like the car had some traction problems with all the hp
Interestingly some German endurance race teams working on a proper race Cayman seem to be very happy with handling/traction, but have to fight engine heating problems (could be resolved by bigger air-inlets/broader rear-body, which again has a negative effect on aerodynamics - seems to be a bit tricky anyway, especially if you consider that those private race teams do not get any support from PAG).
Would love to testdrive such a RK Coupé - buying is another story @ 190k Euro - before VAT

Re: Whats the worst and best bit about your car?

    Very interesting comparison Porsche-Jeck.

My father used to have a MB 190E which was easily the simplest car I ever used so what you wrote accords perfectly with my own experience. Every control was easy to operate with solidly built knobs, switches, buttons etc. In fact, you could operate a 190E without bothering to read the manual.

My father now has a MB CLK320 which is mostly easy to use except 2 things: (1) the COMAND system is an absolute nightmare!! It comes with its own book that is soooo long! At least the Porsche PCM manual is quite short. The MB one is 200-300 pages. PCM is about 80. NB: the MB also comes with a owners manual that is about 300 pages long too. The satnav is a pain to use. It takes ages to enter a destination. The radio and CD are fine though.

    (2) My father asked me to change the time when the clocks went back 1 hour in October. It took me over an hour to read the manual! Normally there are a few small buttons by the analogue instrument dials. Instead, because he has COMAND, that doesn't work. In his car, one has to programme the car to obtain the correct time (for the right country) directly from a satellite. It updates itself constantly. It's fine but the first time you programme it is a pain since the manual doesn't explain this at all. I had to experiment and see what I could make work.

I have lost all confidence in MB user-friendliness.

By contrast, my 997S is so easy to use/program etc. Thank goodness for that!

Re: Whats the worst and best bit about your car?

Besides having the engine right behind my seat and the super-glue like handling, the best bit about my Cayman S for me is the little triangular rear side windows. Inspired design.

The worst bit is the cheap finish on the cupholders. I've got the black plastic ones.

I owned a MB CLK 55 AMG before I bought the Cayman and found the porsche PCM system difficult to get used to. The MB COMAND system is fantastic and easy to use if you drive around with it everyday. I'm slowly getting the hang of the PCM, so I guess it depends on how familiar you are with a particular system, rather than judging a system of a car you don't drive. I'd be at a loss in a BMW to begin with.

Re: Whats the worst and best bit about your car?

Ruf's RK is covered in the current issue of Sports Car International, perhaps the only American car mag worth reading.

What I like about the Cayman S:
    it's a Porsche
it's simple but sporty and stylish
    it has reasonable good power
the style is awesome, seems to be made in heaven

    What I dislike:
a little lack of throtle response under 4.000 (don't have sport chrono package)
some quality issues at delivery (noises) that have been fixed under warranty
when it rains or when you wash the car, you have to dry up the water dripping along the metal in the trunk and front

This is my first Porsche, filling a long time dream. At this point I am thinking of a C4S with X51.
