Re: New Z06 magazine times!! Wow!

I compiled some numbers from recent mag tests of many of today's supercars and merged them into the new Z06 numbers from MT and C&D. Pretty damned interesting comparisons.

    Motor Trend: (Oct. 2005) C6 Z06"

    0-60 in 3.7 sec.
    Skidpad = 1.02 g
    1/4 mile: 11.5 sec. @ 127

    Ferrari F430: 3.8

    1/4 mile:

    Ferrari F430: 11.7@122.8

Motor Trend: (June 2003) "Dodge Viper SRT-10"

    1/4 mile@11.5 sec @126.1
    0-100@7.5 sec

Re: New Z06 magazine times!! Wow!

Looks like the 1/4 mile times are pretty comparable. Can't wait to see how the 997TT fares in the 1/4 mile.

Re: New Z06 magazine times!! Wow!

Stop it vlad! You're ruining the day of many posters here who refuse to think that the P.O.S. corvette can ever run that fast. They have no idea that Porsche would output something better if the consumer DEMANDED it.

Re: New Z06 magazine times!! Wow!

Do not demand anything from Porsche.

They will tell you what is good enough.

Porsche has no competition in the marketplace. Their model line up confirms their belief that the only competition they have are themselves!

There is no reason to ask for anything better from Porsche. Customer input means nothing at a company where genius is a known across the company!

Customers know nothing and are a nuisance!

If the 997TT can't beat these numbers, I would consider the 997TT a disappointment. Why would anyone spend, what, greater than $120K on a 997TT when they can get better performance for $50K less.

    Because it's a Porsche.
Don't focus on the money and don't try to compare the price of the cars.
The competition can build cars that are faster and more affordable than Porsches....but they are not Porsches.
    It's that simple IMO.

Same reason you spend $$$$ on a Ferrari.

Re: New Z06 magazine times!! Wow!

Besides. At the end of the day, how many of us will ever buy a hi-end car based on a 0-100 diff of 1 sec or how faast is does a quartermile?
Unless you like dragracing your car, those accel-times are pretty useless.

I just tracked my Boxey and got overtaken by Alfas with 150 bhp.
Ok, so I'm a rookie - but all of this nice technology cant be put to any use unless you know how to drive the hardware on the limit.

Hence these measurements are plain fun trivia and nothing more.
Take these cars and measure their laptimes on the same track. That would tell some more.

That is true, but then why is everyone on every car board comparing and bench racing his favorite straight line go fast car, whether it be Enzo, C-GT- Ford GT F430,Z06 E55,E63,SL65, M5 .... you get the point. Just look at the 997 Turbo and 997 Turbo S threads at this board , from Porsche owners who are ready to scream if the next bunch of Turbos can't run with the big dogs in the 60- 150 mph straight- line pedal to the metal American style "freeway grand prix" to the next exit . Grandma can wring a car out in this manner to it's max in this type of speed contest comparo , but no one who " races " on the internet can get remotely close to the best drivers in the world in getting the last 10/10ths at every corner at the Ring with any of these cars , so lap speed talk is always couched in many excuses .

Re: New Z06 magazine times!! Wow!

It's all about bragging rights......like you said Dr. Phil, it's meaningless.

Re: New Z06 magazine times!! Wow!

Imagine the concern then of some of our fellow Euro-Porschephiles who seem to be in a state of panic when mentioning ring times... and all for the sake of "bragging rights."

You and Jim seem to be reading a paralel forum
All I see is people acknowledging the Z06 as a seriously fast car, but which is still not a porsche from a driving pleasure point of view.

(and we're still not buying GM's BS about the ring time)

BTW, i find your (and Jim's) view of us as a bunch of bragging snobes, and your (and Jim's) hundreds of posts on this matter kinda' insulting.

You, Jim and Nick should start a new forum, for 'those who have seen the light'.

Ease up brunner... no need to get your panties in a bunch over some times gathered by a bunch of hack magazines. Let's just say I love Porsche cars as well but am not a blind follower. I demand more in life. If I like something then I want it better. Simple as that. I don't like the Corvette but I'm not so ignorant as to think that Porsche couldn't do a better job of making fast cars, if they weren't trying to dummy down their cars.

BTW: Those early rumours about NBR times still have not been confirmed. I have seen two tests so far which did not include any reference to the NBR performance. The GM web site also does not include any official confirmation. ..

I still believe that the entire NBR time debate was based on wishful thinking and nothing else.

What do you define as "confirmation"? Motortrend just ran that front story on it as well. How many magazines is that? The car has now been tested to accelerate in a straight line at the rate of a Ford GT. I just don't see why you would find that time so hard to believe. I hate Corvettes and I believe it.

Re: New Z06 magazine times!! Wow!

The Corvette Z06 N'ring lap time, 0-150mph time and top speed are staggeringly impressive.

You really have to look at it as a recreational vehicle. It will probably have nightmare traction in the rain and no snow tires will be specified by the factory.

For the price of a new GT2, you can get a Z06, or a Cayman with PASM and leather, and a heavily optioned 997S.

If you were thinking of a 997 Turbo, you can get a Z06 and a Boxster S for the same price.

Lots of interesting performance and money choices in the new car market.

Re: New Z06 magazine times!! Wow!

We're very lucky that we are living in a "Golden Age" of automobiles....so many great cars and choices

It's like asking why buy a Porsche when you can get a Noble/TVR/Ariel etc with better performance for less... The Porsche will be the obvious choice to 80% of you guys.

    Like Dr.Phil said: Because it's a Porsche.

Re: New Z06 magazine times!! Wow!

BTW... I have to give the Chev guys their due. They have made an excellent performance car. Congrats.

I'll still take any Porsche over it though..

You're right. What the hell was I thinking?

Re: New Z06 magazine times!! Wow!

The ZO6 is an insanely fast car for a great price. The only reason I'd ever be interested in it though would be because of the impressive speeds and performance it can achieve. However, no matter where you go, there will always be someone faster.
Porsches are different though. There's something intangible about the whole experience. Maybe it's the prestige of the badge. That must have something to do with it, but I just don't know. I don't care what it is, I just enjoy the feeling.
I could buy a ZO6 and absolutely destroy any Porsche in or even above its price range, but for me that would be meaningless.

I don't give any thought to the prestige of Porsche, but I do love the way Porsches feel to drive. I sure would love to see Porsche produce something that could compete with the Z06 at something less than 3x the price like it is now (GT2) and still have the Porsche feel.

The way Porsches feel to drive definitely plays another huge part in their appeal. The steering, braking, overall balance, etc. all feel so precise.
I'm anxious for the release of the 997 GT3 and the 997 Turbo. I hope the weight of the Turbo won't hurt its performance, and that the GT3 will be able to offer some serious competition to the ZO6, even if it will lack about 100hp.
If these two cars can compete with the ZO6, Porsche will be producing cars with ZO6 performance for only about 2x the price.

Re: New Z06 magazine times!! Wow!

The new ZO6 is a worldbeater....

Re: New Z06 magazine times!! Wow!

If you appreciate German engineering, great handling, super brakes and adequate to great acceleration buy a Porsche. If you've got a small weinie buy a Corvette. There I said it. None of you had the nerve.

Re: New Z06 magazine times!! Wow!

I saw a woman driving a Corvette today, how do you explain that?
