And regarding that 991R - at least Lego is not pissing me off. Fair deal, couple boxes are making it to the dealer and first comes first serves. At P I'm since year a good client and I cant buy!

    Re: New camouflaged brick 991

My son let me join him (a little bit) when building the Arocs truck:
    http://www.lego.com/en-us/technic/products/42043-mercedes-benz-arocs
The mix of electrical motor and pneumatic pump is absolutely great!

The crawler crane is great as well:
    http://www.lego.com/en-us/technic/products/42042-crawler-crane

And just before xmas, I rebuilt the car chassis I had got as a present exactly 38 years ago:
http://brickset.com/sets/853-1/Car-Chassis (since it was mine, my son allowed me to build it on my own)

    Lego is a wonderful time-machine!...

    Re: New camouflaged brick 991

    Pierre,

I had the same car!  I-4 engine, rack and pinon steering and a 3 speed plus you could see what all the parts did.  Back when Lego parts really were interchangeable.  Thanks for the flashback.

    Re: New camouflaged brick 991

My kids don't like LEGO, never did. They are more into computers and programming. My son just programmed a mod for GTA V, a game he isn't even supposed to play (he watched me playing from time to time). yes I was pretty impressed with it because he just used a half baked source code (C++) for it and made an impressive mod menu out of it with all the bells and whistles. He is 12, the same age I started programming myself and building amateur radios myself. He already did some webkit exploits for PS4, pretty impressive too since I didn't even help him but this almost got him kicked from PSN (I had a lot of explaining to do...).

Now he wants to start to program an iOS game with Swift...can't wait for the first results.

The daughter is more into internet stuff like web design and blogs, she already created two blogs for her friends but nothing public. A school blog she made was shut down by the school because she didn't have permission and the school didn't want such a thing. Now the kids have their own "secret" blog with invites only.  At least they have now a private chat away from the WhatsApp crowd.

Both kids never liked playing with LEGO. Sometimes I got the feeling that they weren't patient enough to do that.

I kind of regret not getting them into LEGO but now it is too late I guess.

    Re: New camouflaged brick 991

My kids love LEGOs. Over 50% of the toys they get are LEGOs (sometimes I fell like we own an entire LEGO store). They build  them, play with them, undo them then make their own... It has helped us tremendously to resist giving them electronic devices (they have very restricted access to iPad, do not have iPhones and no electronic tous with a screen, only a Sony camera). I don't think we could have done it without LEGO. It also makes them huge readers, my daughter reads 200 books a year or so...

No, our kids always had full access to electronic devices since they were small. This is why both kids speak fluently English and with an American accent. Smiley Their English teachers always think they are native speakers, which is funny. They never watched  German TV or movies, not even now.

Both are very good in school, so no worries here. Son unfortunately doesn't like to read (he reads books on a Kindle but loves his computer stuff) but the daughter reads at least a book or two per month but it isn't easy since she has a lot of work for school because she is preparing for her high school diploma in two years and usually she goes to bed at 11 pm or 12 am...at age 15. Smiley

School over here was 13 classes but they switched to 12 classes and instead of eliminating unnecessary subject matters, they left everything like it was before and so they have more hours in school and of course more to learn.
I do not see any negative impact from using electronic devices that early but me and my wife were always very strict about school, homework and grades, so maybe this is actually the most important thing to make sure the kids stay on track.

When it comes to school, no leeway in our family...zero tolerance. Actually, right now, we are trying to push our daughter into the right direction what she wants to study. We were thinking something involving medicine or maybe a bit easier like dentistry (orthodontists, especially for kids, make a fortune here) but right now, she is more interested in something involving language or technology. Not long ago, she wanted to become an actress or singer, so we made progress. Smiley Smiley

She loves doing the Cryptokids stuff on the NSA site, she is very fascinated by it...riddles, codes..., also loves the NSA Crypto app with games but unfortunately there is no way she can do that in Germany (Germans are vey conservative about intelligence agencies) and since she is no US citizen, no chance with NSA. Smiley Smiley

Sorry for the long rant but I love talking about my kids (I guess all parents are that boring... Smiley Smiley).

All jobs crypto related are most likely for genius level kids... I know two who worked in that field and they were totally geniuses...

I know, this is why we want her to do something "serious" (medicine...dentistry...) but she loves doing that crypto stuff right now (she is no real genius though in my opinion, even if she talked like an adult at age 12 months) and why would I crush a...crush. Smiley As long as she doesn't show up with a piercing, tattoo, drunk or with a 20 year old boyfriend, I'm OK with it. Smiley

Btw: My kids loved going to Legoland Germany when they were younger but now we haven't been for years and they are just around the corner (half hour drive). I actually miss it a little bit, it was fun, especially when the weather was nice. Also good food for the family. Smiley

    Re: New camouflaged brick 991

hard to remove electronic devices from kids.  All my 3 girls have their MacBook, ipad, iphone, etc.

they need them to study and communicate with their friends, can be for study, or just to socialize, and for pleasure.

if they continue to do well in school, and behave well at home, they can continue to keep them in their rooms.

my eldest daughter is now 20 and doing first year med school in Ireland, while middle daughter at 18 is doing commerce at U of Toronto.  I'm feeling very blessed.indecision

    Re: New camouflaged brick 991

Now it's official, the Lego GT3 RS will be Lava Orange. It'll feature a fully working PDK gearbox with paddle shifting and a unique "VIN" for every single model (see more in that video from Lego:  https://youtu.be/L5wy0YhCuuA).

You can get it from June on via the Lego online shop and beginning August, toy stores might likely sell it as well. There is only one big drawback: Porsche pricing, as some say. The set will be 299,99 USD or EUR respectively. Ouch. As much as I'd love to build this, given it's the first proper Lego Porsche, 300€ is a lot for a student without regular income.

    Re: New camouflaged brick 991

^ yes price is steep, but I think I will get a set anyway indecision
