RC - Any info or pics on S DVD Comand?

Anyone have info or pics of the new DVD Comand systems for S-Class vehicles? Is it the same as the new E except with Bose for audio vs. Harman? Does it have an Aux glovebox input? Will it be available in the US for 2004 MY? Thanks in advance,

    Jeff

As far as I know, the S-class system is not the same as the E-class system. The S-class COMAND is not DVD-based and is made by Blaupunkt. The E-class COMAND is made by Becker.
Due to the MOST bus of the E-class and the Becker COMAND, the DVD-based Becker COMAND is faster.
To make it short: NO, the COMAND from the E-class doesn't have anything to do with the COMAND from the S-class, different manufacturers, different hardware and not compatible at all!
The MY2004 S-class has the COMAND as standard but there is an option now called COMAND APS which actually is the same COMAND as in the new E-class.
    I know this sounds confusing.

I suppose (not 100% sure) that the new (optional!) COMAND APS has the AUX glovebox input as on the new E-class.
However, as the US COMAND and ROW COMAND are technically slightly different, I don't know for sure.

BTW: the retrofit COMAND APS kits available in Germany or other countries (not US/Canada) don't have the AUX glovebox input as standard but it can be easily retrofitted.

I try to find a picture of the new COMAND APS on the S-class but I suppose it looks the same as on the E-class.

You're not kidding, this certainly is confusing. Are you saying that the MY 2004 S-Class COMAND APS option will be the Harman Comand DVD sytem that the E-Class has? Also, any word on whether this new COMAND APS option for S-Class vehicles will be offered in the US in 2004?

Re: RC - Any info or pics on S DVD Comand?

All information I have indicates that the new COMAND APS on the S-class is the same system as on the E-class. It wouldn't make much sense to use one manufacturer for one car model and another one for another.
What I know 100% for sure is that the COMAND APS for the MY 2004 S-class is DVD based.

I don't know if it will be available on the MY 2004 S-class but it will definetely be available on the MY 2004 E-class.
Stupid question: why don't you ask your dealer, he can find out in a few minutes by contacting MBUSA.

Re: RC - Any info or pics on S DVD Comand?

Actually, my dealer wasn't of much help and inquiries they made to MBUSA didn't yield any concrete info. So, I was posting here hoping you had some inside knowledge. I agree that it makes complete sense for the DVD Nav system of both the S and E to be the same. However, there does to be one slight change.

In my search for info, I came across someone on the MB World boards who is working for Daimler here in the US. I asked him about DVD Nav availability on US S Class models in 04 and he said that both S and CL class models are will have DVD Nav. Additionally, he mentioned that the Nav systems for these models will be the same as that on the E except for one thing. There were a few folks who were disappointed to find out that the initial launch of DVD Nav in the E did not include the 3-D Bird's Eye View mode that had been touted prior to launch. Information previously obtained stated that the E would not have this feature until 2005. My contact at Daimler confirmed this but also, surprisingly, said that the 3-D Bird's Eye View mode would be available in the DVD Nav systems of 2004 S and CL models! That was a surprise and one I was happy to hear. I've used Nav systems with this view type before and it certainly can make a difference when trying to figure out a complex interchange or an area crowded with streets.
