    Transmission problems

    While driving my car today as I was changing to second from first my transmission failed. Felt like the linkage between the stick and the transmission itself broke. Had to have the car flatbed trucked to the nearest P dealership. Good service from Porsche roadside assistance.


    At the dealership I had my first view of a 997 Turbo which looks so good in person compared to pictures. 1 year waiting list also I was told by the sales guy.

    Anyone else had this transmission problem?

    i think it's pretty common to have the shift linkage break. It's just a piece of plastic. Try looking into aftermarket alumnium ones, they are much stronger.

    Shift lever could have simply popped out of the socket. In the 996/986 there is a retaining clip that is hard to see and also hard to seat (slide into place).

    My shift from first to second is really difficult, particularly when cold. It's as if there are forces against it. Should I bring it back to the dealer to get this realligned?

    AFAIK, it's not unusual when cold. For less PITA, take it easy and try shifting from first to third, being careful not to lug engine, until the tranny warms up.

    IMHO, if it goes away when warm, things are probably okay.
