Can't think why there wasn't a 998...yet! However, the next in line would be a 999 which, in the UK, is an emergency number similar to 911 in the US.... so no problem there then!
Can only think that they got it wrong and should have produced an earlier 991, 992, 994 & 995, as well as a 998 & 999.
At eight year intervals between models, this would have taken us to MY 2052. That would have seen off most , if not all, of the current Porsche 911 market....

Porker:
My guess is they wanted to emphasize the changes from 997 to 991, 998 might have suggested more shared components with the 997 (like from 996 to 997)?
Correct! Notice it went 996-997, and those two cars are based on the same platform. If the new 911 were based on the 997 and 996's platform, it could very well be called the 998, but since it's a new platform, they had to change the ending number, now it's 991. The next generation will be based on the same platform, so it will probably be called the 992. I bet the next two after that will be 994 and 995.
