    New Camaro Confirmed

The new Camaro is offically on.

A few weeks ago GM Product Czar Bob Lutz said he had hit the pause button on it over concern about Federal mileage standards. Today GM's CEO and VP of Finance announced they were going forward with it.

Expect to see it in 2009. One version will have the new 7.2 DOHC V8 with direct injection and variable valve timing that produces more hp than todays Z06.

The new Camaro uses a shortened version of the new Holden V8 sedan's chassis and its Brembo brakes. It will be made in both coupe and convertible versions.

    Re: New Camaro Confirmed

Great news being a Camaro owner. But this was official weeks ago.
I already have a deposit on one. Can't wait.

    Re: New Camaro Confirmed

    I love this car

    Jim - isn't that new DOHC V8 6.2L?

    Re: New Camaro Confirmed

What will be the price of the top performing one?

    Re: New Camaro Confirmed

Grant, I am sure GM will offer a 6.2 version also. Usually GM has 4 different displacement V8s on their menue of motors for various applications. None of these new ones will be related to the Northstar V8.

I have no idea what the cost of the fastest model Camaro will be.

OK - I thought maybe you had a typo. Didn't realize that GM planned to exceed the 427 displacement

6.2 liters is not more then 427 ci though....

    Re: New Camaro Confirmed

    6.2l = 378ci. 7.2l = 439ci. A 454 is about 7.44l.

    Re: New Camaro Confirmed

I just can't get over the fact that these cars has the same platform as every second taxis out there (in Australia anyway)...

I used to have a Cadillac with 472 cid

    Re: New Camaro Confirmed

Sorry to say this... but I think that car is so damn ugly! It is so far from clean and aesthetic car design that you can get .. but perhaps it's because I'm a swede and like clean sober stuff in general and not vulgar looks like this...

The powerplant in the car is another story though.. that should be a monster

    Re: New Camaro Confirmed

I agree Lukas. That Camaro is truly tasteless if you ask me...

They are going after this (pic below). They want to recapture the 1960's style muscle car. Personally I think US car maker's would sell a lot if they brought back most of the 60's style, especially the muscle cars in pure form not a retro design. Updated with today's engine management and braking, suspension tech, etc.

Even on the luxury side, cars like lincolns and cadillacs actually had style back then. It was for the most part a complete opposite of today. The US producers made the powerful, stylistic, and quality and europe/asia made crap with a very few exceptions.

Now the US makers want to recapture that but are too timid to boldly copy themselves outright.

    Re: New Camaro Confirmed

This would be a nice corvette

The list of "very few exceptions" is, you may be disappointed to learn, a very long one

    Re: New Camaro Confirmed

Easy, the list is not much to crow about.

    (Nissan)Datsun had nothing until the '69 240Z.
Toyota had nothing much but the Toyopet and the hand built President.
Mercedes had the 600. The rest of MB stuff was slowwwwwwwww.
BMW had only 4 bangers until the 2500 and 2800s in 69.
Ferrari had the V12's, the Dino V6 and a lot of service visits.
Porsche still had 2 liter 6's.
Jag had the E type but their sedans could barely break 120mph and broke lots of parts all the time.

There were so many '60's US models that weighed +- 3600lbs with 300hp plus that its impossible to list them all here.
That was when gas was 19 cents a gallon and before emission and safety regs.

    Re: New Camaro Confirmed

And what about Aston Martin, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Bristol, Lotus, Jensen, Rover, Caterham, Morgan just to name a few British cars...Jim, no offence, but I fear that your patriotism is affecting your objectivity!

    Re: New Camaro Confirmed

easy, thats fair, but really so few RR and Bentley were made and they were slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Astons were pretty limited production and the Jensens also. Bristols? even fewer made than all Morgans and Lotus's made on Fridays of leap years in the 60's.

There just isnt much to point to, 500 cars or less made a year puts them all into the obscure category.

You really cant pit British and European manufacturers for HP against GM, Chrysler and Ford in the the 60's.

Jim, I wasn't claiming that British cars in the 1960s had more HP than American muscle cars. There's no contest there. I was just objecting to racerx's statement that "Europe was producing crap" back in the 1960s. We weren't.

    Re: New Camaro Confirmed

I wouldnt call it crap either.

I think he meant crap not as in defective, but as in crap like the US euphanism for slow.

But what do I know, I like Citroen DS21's and Lotus Elans.

Firstly, easy as one of the most erudite members here I'm sure you know that my statement was an opinion and what I really meant by "crap" was "who would want to own for the purpose of driving that POS" (if you could only own 1 vehicle) and not to own for investment purposes.

What about most of those cars? I feel these would be an exception to the crap rule from THE END OF WW II to THE EARLY 1970's, e-type jag (which i have driven hundreds of miles in ) , the 50's jag owned by steve mcqueen, and a DB5.

As for the continent, ferrari made a few nice models, but like porsche most were for racing. Porsche made nothing for the street that was really impressive until the 928. The 928 made porsche a serious producer of luxury sports cars. Think about that, from production to design, the 928 exercise transformed porsche. tough to accept for some but true.

And i was standing next to the porsche spyder 2 days ago. It had a beautiful shape but was really not an impressive production vehicle. But it gets in under a go-kart like exemption.

    Asia made absolutely nothing.

Now compare that to the 60's and 50's american stuff. It was fast, powerful, and built to last. Open the hood on a 60's corvette, chevelle, hemi cuda, mustang, camaro, firebird, road runner with wing, it could do 200 mph back then. Then came the oil embargo and the world caved in for american manufacturing and has never recovered. The corvette engine and the shelby gt500 being attempts.

That's my opinion but i have driven or seen most of these and watched all the history of the marque shows. I was born in the early 1960's so i saw this first hand.

We have the reverse of the 50's and 60's now, probably all most here have ever known.

    Re: New Camaro Confirmed

RacerX The DB5 drives like a truck. Its handles worse than a '67 Camaro with a base suspension and bias ply tires.

But how could you leave out the SS option for the 2800lb 396cu '66 Chevy 2 or the '64 Pontiac GTO. Shame on you!

And true, the Plymouth Hemi powered Super Bird would hit 200mph. That was certified on March 24, 1970, at 200.447 mph at Talladega. Price? $4,000.

I dont think that Easy has ever seen a car that uses hardened steel chain for one of the motor mounts.

HP was stated at 425. It was actually 480 to 500.

    For Easy's Plymouth education.....

    Beep Beep!

    Re: New Camaro Confirmed

I can't believe you guys are debating the semantic meaning of the word "crap" (as in "Europe made crap" cars in the 1960s) and what racerx must have meant and whether it meant "crap HP" or "crap that nobody would want to own".

I read "crap" to mean "crap overall". I myself would not get a stick and root around in a pile of manure debating the nature of that manure.

Coming back to the original thread, I still think this Camaro looks totally tasteless. The rest of what has been discussed has just been an automotive walk down memory lane
