    Re: Porsche 961 confirmed

Wasn't the 961 number used for the competition version of 959?

This is a good development but I hope the design is not a 918 clone but something different and fresh.

Correct - 961 was the racing car based on the 959.

I just hope this car does not affect the 911 at all, I mean, its obviously goin to overlap performancewise with some 911 variants like the Turbos-S or GT2 so I hope the allow this and do not limit the top performing 911 variants to avoid it...

I am sure all models will be nicely niched as usual. Having said that, does anyone need more performance than the 997.2 Turbo S? Smiley

    Re: Porsche 961 confirmed

The 911 needs the performance that corresponds to its natural evolution, no more no less, the rpoblem if is a new r player in the lineup affects that for its to be niched in, which I highly doubt, since if one thing Posche has learned time and time again over the years is never to mess with the 911.

    Re: Porsche 961 confirmed

Porsche needs to sell cars indecision One thing that Porsche has learned too is that there is much profit to make on other models than the 911.

As to the performance... the 911 already has the performance us mortals need. I am rather looking for more driving pleasure in future 911 models than shaving off another 0.1 seconds to 100 km/h or another 10 seconds around the Ring. This is more of a worry to me than the 911 being slotted in between the 981 and 961 models...

    Re: Porsche 961 confirmed

The performance evolution on the 911 is not dependant on what us mortals can extract, it's dictated by matching and surpasing what the performance of the competition's is at the time, so that need to evolve, and that incluides o-100 times and lap times, thats what sells cars, and like you say, Porsche needs to sell cars.

Which also has a lot to do with image

Porsche has learned to that there is a lot of profit to make on other models, but ironically those that bring the cash home are the non-sportcars in the lineup, and used the image of Porsche to sell them, and Porsche's image lies directly tied to the 911, not to mention that the 911 a much higher volume seller vehicle than what the 961.

I'm just rambling outloud here... in particular that I just hope that Porsche handles well the nitching of this new model into the model line so as not to affect the top flagship 911 varianats.

    Re: Porsche 961 confirmed

I understand what you are saying Carlos, but I prefer to see it in this simplistic way:

There is a mid-engine sports car market out there and there is no reason why Porsche should not have a competitive product in that niche. wink

    Re: Porsche 961 confirmed

The 961 is a nice idea - and no, it won't affect the sales figures of the 911.
Why? It turns more in the direction of a "real" sport car, almost with attitudes of a race car.

The fact is the 911 is more and more a car for the older generation 50+ (like me :-) ).

Besides of a 911 GT2 RS the normal 911 even the Turbo S are great daily drivers and the more they turn in this direction the more the will attract older buyer with the necessary money. If you really want a car with sport car image you may consider the 961 or alike. Porsche has detected a real niche as always

If the 911 gives a gross profit to Porsche of 40%-50%, the 961 will give more % and on a higher price.

    A wise business decision really.

I agree, I'm not against this car at all, on the contrary, and it will be great for Porsche's image and I think will also bring new customers to the brand which is very important.

What I'm saying is that they should allow the natural overlap between this car and the top performing 911 variants to happen and let it be, and not limit either in any way so as not to overlap, kind of like what they do to the Boxster because of the 911.

    --

I am not sure what you are referring to. Presently, Porsche has gradations of performance between the 911 models with appropriate price differentials. Why would the 961 impact that structure? Smiley

    --

    Re: Porsche 961 confirmed

Because the 961 is not a 911, so graduations within the 911 range is OK because you can choose which ever you want, but if the 961 limits some of those 911 models to avoid overlap, then those looking for the 911 version cannot get one because the 961 has taken that performance slot. Like I mentioned before, its like with the Boxtser and the 911, many Boxster customers would buy a GT3 version of a boxster or a Turbo version if availalble but there are no such models to choose from because they would overlap on some 911 models. What I'm efering to then is the risk that with the 961 they need to push out or limit some of the top performing 911 variants to avoid overlap. Though the 911 being the image of Porsche, selling so many more units, and having such a base, that I doubt they would touch it in that sense.

Yep.  I've learnt to take whatever Auto Express says with a large grain of salt.  Their "exclusive images" are usually bad photoshops and their "breaking announcements" of new models are often imaginary BS.

Porsche confirms development of mid-engined model to rival Ferrari’s 458 Italia...

Porsche’s management has approved the development of a mid-engined sports car that will be a rival for the Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12C.

Porsche CEO Matthias Muller has confirmed the carmaker is working on a rival for the Ferrari 458 Italia, as the company wants to offer a model which will sit between performance models such as the 911 GT2 RS and the upcoming €840,000 918 Spyder hybrid supercar.

According to Muller, the perfect candidate to fill the empty slot in the lineup is a mid-engined supercar that Porsche expects to offer for about €300,000. Porsche hasn’t yet announced a name for the newcomer, but rumors suggest it could be called 961.

The 458 Italia rival will use technology from the 918 Spyder, including a lightweight carbon fiber-reinforced plastic monocoque chassis. The Porsche 961 is likely to be powered by the same 4.6-liter V8 used in the 918 Spyder, with maximum power to be around 570 hp and a 0-100 km/h time of little over 3 seconds.

These figures are close to what the Ferrari 458 Italia and the McLaren MP4-12C have to offer. The new model is part of Porsche’s plans to sell 200,000 cars a year in 2018.

Well the fact that RC is avoiding this thread like the plague (whilst talking about ipads in the off-topic area) is clearly to protect our valuable sources.  But reading between the lines, as we are so often encouraged to do, I can see GENUINE PROOF - and you've heard it here first and exclusively on Rennteam - that this rumour is either entirely true or absolutely false.

Just not quite clear myself which one it is yet.Smiley

Yes, I think that sums it up pretty well Smiley

It would make sense for them to build such a car. There is a market. The 918 serves well as a prototype platform for a future 961. Those attracted to conspiracy theories might say that Porsche has to build it because the 911 platform cannot evolve much further without changing iconic features (e.g. the capacity of the flat six cannot be increased far beyond 4.0l and adding two cylinders is probably no go). Hence they niche the 911 and invent a new top-line model where they have free hands to build what needs to be built.

Remember, you read it here first Smiley
