    Finished At Last..

     Hi All,

I finally got the suspension installed, set up, certified, and my light wheels fitted to my Boxster, so thought I'd share a few pics:

The suspension is KW v3, which I had on my last Boxster and liked a lot.  It was set up by FMT in Jona, who specialise in Porsche suspension and engine work (mostly racing cars).  They originally set it up a bit low for me - handled really well, but scraped a lot getting into my garage, so I asked them to raise it up bit - more practical now.   They corner-weighted it and it came out a total of 1355KG with 29 litres of fuel in the tank - the balance came out near 25/25/25/25 which they were very pleased with.  I tried to specify the car so it stayed relatively light.

It drives superbly  The suspension is set up quite compliantly, so it is comfortable on the road, but push it hard and you can feel exactly what's going on underneath you.  The combination of light wheels and brakes result in fantastic steering feel and feedback.  It feels like it really flies now!  Very pleased with the result.

Would I change the spec any now I've had it a while?  Not really.  The Alcantara GT3-a-like interior would have been nice but worked out too expensive.  I'm not 100% on the colour - ideally something between that and the dark metallic would have been best.  It certainly polarises people though - they either love it or hate it.  The seats are great, the exhaust sounds superb, and the LSD certainly helps in the twisties..

Just need to get it on the track now..

Are you considering Porsche center caps or you don't like the look? Who makes the wheels, Champion? WRE?

Sweet ride. Love the color, that metallic is really outstanding! Smiley

    Re: Finished At Last..

Thanks, Stradale.  I'd certainly intended to fit the original centre caps, and Mike at Tech1 assured me they fitted, but mine are slightly too big.  I might try and get a used set and take down the edges a bit to see if I can make them work.  The wheels are from Tech1 / Forged Alloys USA - who's website seems to have gone offline for now.. They're about 25% lighter than the Porsche OE wheels.

    Re: Finished At Last..

I've never had the chance to drive a Boxster w/ lightweight wheels & PCCB's,must be a dream drive with that balance..  I know on my 997 I can definitely feel the difference. I'm a huge fan of the Carbon Ceramic brakes, from all the options it's the one I'd least like to give up.

Yep, I'm very impressed with them.  Amazing feel and power - when they're got a bit of heat in them (cold wet motorways are another story ).  Can't understand people that claim there's little difference

Hehe, hope so.. that was one of the aims..

I haven't booked it yet, but should do.  I'm just having trouble convincing myself about the combination of October and €2600...  Would be good to see how it compares with the 911s though

Many congratulations Dave the finished article looks truly superb. Smiley You clearly put a great deal of thought into the set up.  Must be pure magic on those wonderful Swiss roads....Smiley

We have no regrets whatever about chosing aqua blue for our car, such a vibrant colour compared with the more common monochrome Porsche shades.

I've yet to track our Cayman, with Goodwood just down the road and being a member of the Goodwood Road Racing Club, with many opportunities through membership I really must take advantage of it!

    Re: Finished At Last..

The car looks superb, I definitely like it. The colour, wheels and suspension make the car more flashy than is usually seen on Porsche sportscars, maybe that´s what irritates some people. It does fit though to its overall purpose.

I recall that Tech1 / FA must have had some issues in recent past with the supply chain, not sure what state they are currently in.

+1 Smiley I like Aqua Blue more than all the other shades of blue currently available in the Porsche colour palette. Looks great Smiley

It's unbelievable that you haven't tracked your Cayman yet Smiley I recently had the pleasure of enjoying some taxi laps in a Cayman R driven by a PSDS Instructor at Porsche Leipzig. It was great fun!

I would recommend some track driving training before you venture out on track though ... you will get so much more out of it once you know what you should be doing Smiley

@ easy - your right about the professional training - I'd love to do the Porsche Precision & Performance courses at Silverstone, only the high cost is putting me off....Smiley

    Re: Finished At Last..

I thought that the PSDS Precision Course was included in the UK new car purchase price ... I'm pretty sure it was a couple of years ago.

I know that the PSDS Precision Course started out as a half day course and then it became a full day course. It could be that this was when the pricing changed.

You could check with your OPC whether you have to pay for it. You have already bought 2 Boxster Ss and a Cayman S from them so they ought to arrange it for you for free anyway IMvHO.

The PSDS Performance Course will cost extra. In some countries, it is taught as a 1 day course, in others, it is a 2 day course.

However, the course syllabus is supposed to be the same. So the extra day is really made up of extra track time.

Indeed, all PSDS branches across the world are supposed to teach the same skills so it shouldn't matter where you undergo a course.

You might want to do these courses at different locations with gaps in between each training course to practice.

Alternatively, I did the PSDS Precision, Performance and Master Courses over 3 consecutive days at the same location i.e. so that the 3 courses effectively became one really intensive 3 day course (with each day building upon what was learnt on the preceding day) on the same track (which one really gets used to).

Just to mix it up, PSDS France did the Precision and Master Courses clockwise on the Magny-Cours Club Circuit but they taught the Performance Course anti-clockwise on the same Magny-Cours Club Circuit. This was great since it was effectively like driving on a new circuit. Driving a familiar circuit in reverse can be a refreshingly different challenge.

The UK pricing for the PSDS Performance and Master Courses is roughly the same as the prices in PSDS Germany. The big difference though is that PSDS GB uses the Porsche Driving Experience track which seeks to resemble a UK country road (like a B road).

The PSDS Germany and PSDS France tracks are either specially designed training circuits (that resemble race tracks e.g. Magny-Cours Club Circuit or Luk Safety Driving Centre in Baden Baden) or they are actual grand prix circuits.(e.g. Hockenheim, Nuerburgring with Nordschleife etc). Of course, Porsche Leipzig is a really great place to learn too .. it is made up of corners from different grand prix tracks from around the globe - like a kind of Frankenstein track :) It's a long way to go but well worth it IMvHO. Having just come back from a PSDS track day there, I can honestly say I have no regrets at going all the way there.

And another thing ... about language, if you do courses at PSDS Germany, they provide someone who will teach you in English ... effectively it's like having a personal tutor which the rest of the participants don't get since they receive group tuition in German. So being an English speaker there is not a disadvantage but can actually be an advantage ... :)

    Hope this is useful info

    Re: Finished At Last..

The other thing I forgot to mention ... PSDS France has moved base from Magny-Cours. They now use a track called Bugatti and also a circuit at Le Mans. I don't know whether this is a training circuit adjacent to Le Mans or whether it is Le Mans itself.

They haven't had a track day since 2009-2010, so I haven't had the opportunity of finding out.

At the moment, I am finding out ways to do track days in the UK, France and Belgium. I will start another thread on that

Easy, Circuit Bugatti is the real, permanenl Le Mans track, just without the public road they add for the 24 hours race.

Yes, intruigingly a guy in a California was buzzing around me making a lot of noise the other day - not sure what he felt he had to prove   He even had hair.

It does attract more attention than my old grey one, no question.  I'm pleased with it anyway, and it makes a change from the usual old silver and black.
