    Why do older cars have exhaust smoke?

    Just saw a 996 TTS for sale. White/blue smoke came out of the exhaust when the engine was switched on. Is it because the previous owner did not take proper care? Or is it because engines age and eventally start producing more smoke?

    Any thoughts about proper care?

    All flat 4 and 6 engines do that on occaision. Its normal.
    Remember the pistons and cylinders are lying down and sometimes at rest a tiny amount of oil will get by the rings and on start up produce some smoke. It happens, its no big deal.

    What is NOT normal is if when driving you press the gas, then let off and get a trail of white/blue smoke - that would be a sign of valve stem guide failure.

    if its just on start up, its either normal , or on the last shut down turbo's were hot and they switch off the engne without cooling them..
