    R8 better than F430!

Or so according to Mark Webber...this from an article from Wheels magazine, sept 2007, written by Peter Robinson.
"After the F1 chat, I'm keen to ask about Webber's road car. Red Bull is powered by a Renault V8, so, not suprisingly given the commercial ties, he drives an "awesome" R26 Renault Megane, which replaces the BMW M5 at his disposal during his time at Williams BMW. In Formula One, sponsors always come first.

But that doesn't stop Webber, straight forward as always, ignoring the politically correct answer.

"The best road car I have driven is the Audi R8," he says. "A few of us [drivers] spent a track day recently at the Paul Ricard [the Bernie Ecclestone-owned circuit in the south of France].

"Kimi [Raikkonen] almost destroyed the latest Ferrari F430 trying to keep up [with the Audi]. 'I can't hang on to you; you're too quick,' he told us.

The R8 is an awesome piece of kit, phenomenal."

    Nick, don't argue with a F1 driver. R8 wins.

    Re: R8 better than F430!

they are just not coming to the states yet. my dealer
told me he won't carry it. Audi demands they buy 500,000
worth of computer equipment just for this car. not worth it
    getting maybe 1 car/month.

    Re: R8 better than F430!

The R8 is very well sorted. It is extraordinary that it can be so rapid against the likes of cars that are good on execution and on paper, which judging the numbers it is a bit of a suprise (well, maybe, not anymore since a lot of the press love the R8) can keep the F430 so honest. But I still like the Ferrari and cannot wait to read up on driving impressions, reviews, and comparisons magazines will do with the 430 Scuderia.

    Re: R8 better than F430!

Hahahaha, yeah right, that`s why around NS the F430 is 10 seconds faster.

Not to mention that HvS has the habit of driving non german cars with the handbrake on - hehehhehe

The NS is a high-speed track. Apples and oranges.

    Re: R8 better than F430!

I agree Crash. R8 doesn't have the outright power for the high-speed circuit. I think you will find that the R8 is as fast as F430 on a lot of slower/tighter circuits.

Mate, let`s have some common sense here, will ya ?

The F430 is lighter, accelerates way faster, brakes better, and has more downforce.

    http://www.roadandtrack.com/assets/download/0407AudiR8_2.pdf

Now, point out one area where the R8 is better.

PS, leave aside the AWD, on a race treack that`s hardly an advantage

    Re: R8 better than F430!

enzomikael, too bad the performance of a car cannot be decided by just looking at specification PDFs alone.

It will be very interesting when the V10 version comes out.

    Re: R8 better than F430!

"enzomikael, too bad the performance of a car cannot be decided by just looking at specification PDFs alone." Have to agree. I am sometime getting bored on this forum of people seems to know everything from spec sheets and great times at the NS. I agree that an F430 might me a bit faster than an R8 on the race track. As a normal driver owning a Ferrari and having bought an R8. I can assure you that for the somewhat over average driver an R8 is much easier to handle on high speeds. I have driven the R8 on that track (SPA-Francourchamps) as well my Ferrari and my Porsche 911. I can tell you this R8 drives and had a road handling like you cannot believe it. I drove the car together with Erik van der Poele also an ex F1 driver and a well know 24hours drives and he was of that same opinion.

    Re: R8 better than F430!

Tracks may be more popular in EU, but suspect vast majority of 430/Scud/R8/997TT or 997GT2/GSL, etc buyers in US never visit a track....many have zero desire to sched time in advance to drive a car out in Podunk somewhere, w/enormous set of risks entailed on any track not fully closed to non-familiar drivers (sometimes legal speed enfcmt saves some reckless drivers (and fellow drivers and potential victims) from their own stupidity ) and far from any competent med ctr in event of collision....

So, suspect car's tq/precision/stability/safety (active and passive)/daily-useability (ground clearance; gearbox) on dry/wet/bumpy/smooth/dense-traffic/empty public roads (both urban fwys and mtn twisties) are more relevant qualitative, subjective comparisons, in hands of a mere amateur driver who prob has a well-paying day job and is a bit more risk-averse than most race/test drivers....

That said, interesting that Scud is being developed w/track-spec tires (P Corsa?) that may not be amenable to wet roads/may be more at risk of flats on even dry urban roads (stickiness vs nails/debris)....perhaps mfrs in their marketing zeal for ever-better NBR times are losing sight of how likely buyers in major mkts actually use/drive their cars.....

    Re: R8 better than F430!

WBH, Scud is not designed as a daily road car though, so I can understand the retionale...

It's actually $100,000k. My dealer didn't want to do it either but they opt to do it after receiving many orders.

    That would make it $100m!!!

Very True. Even with a 70 hp disadvantage, and a big weight disadvantage, the audi is still keeping up with cars like the F430 on multiple tracks. (Even beating it on one). Not bad for an underpowered, 'heavy', 1st time sports car from Audi. Not bad one bit...

    Re: R8 better than F430!

R10 is going to be the real test...

    Re: R8 better than F430!

I heard rumours that the R10 would be out end of next year, that would be mean.

    Re: R8 better than F430!

Didn't the R8 beat the 997TT in a recent magazine test? AWD to AWD and a short track.

    Re: R8 better than F430!

    Nick,
R8 is a good car but, it is not ultimate sportscar IMHO.
IMO F430, Gallardo and 997 Turbo are at all different(higher) level...

Agreed, but it's an amazing feat to see that the R8's performance capabilities is almost on the level of the 997 Turbo and 430....Just imagine what the R8 V10 is going to accomplish!!!

    Re: R8 better than F430!

V10 version will not be that much better. Think about it-V10 engine will add 50kg of weight to the rear(not very best thing for mid-engine layout) and it will be more powerfull... BUT, V10 version will not have that fluid line of current R8 since it will use more open side blades(ugly, IMHO) and more agressive side skirts...
For me current R8 is very good car indeed. I am simply not interested in V10 version. It will be only marginally faster(both in acceleration and on the track) then current V8 R8. Trust me on this...

    Re: R8 better than F430!

    but apparently it'll burn faster...
