    One of my best friends works as an engineer for BMW (you may remember the camouflaged Z4 garage photo I posted, with his permission) and he told me that Alpina has a very good relationship to BMW but they are not involved in development at all. They get however access to early cars, whatever this means but I doubt they get access to prototypes, this would violate BMWs own policy.

    I remember in the past, when I had some dealings with Techart, buying stuff from them, one of the vendors told me that they work hand in hand with Porsche. After a couple of years, I had the chance to talk to a couple of engineers at Weissach directly about Techart and they told me that the Exclusive department had some leather(!) work done at Techart and a few minor accessories for the interior but no development work.

    You always need to be careful with these small tuners...oops...manufacturers. Look at RUF for example: Many years, I was told by RUF drivers that Alois Ruf was directly involved with Porsche development and that he had access to Weissach. This was BS. Alois Ruf was happy that he got granted the certification as an official Porsche workshop, it was a tough thing to achieve. Alois Ruf was always very honest about this but many RUF drivers seem to have spread false rumors.

    Brabus and Mercedes, similar thing. At some point, Mercedes and Brabus came very close, even to a point where some official Mercedes dealerships in Germany were offering Brabus products and Brabus tuning in-house. Then, I guess, Mercedes realized that they already have an in-house "tuner"...AMG. Smiley Even now many believe that Brabus and Mercedes work closely together in development. They don't.

    The only "tuner" who had an excellent relationship, including access to early development and other "critical" data was (is?)... ABT. ABT works very closely to Volkswagen and even Audi. They even have a warranty agreement. Not sure if the same is valid today but they certainly had really good access to VW development.

    Manthey and Porsche? Yes, this is a thing. Also because Porsche actually owns Manthey (Racing). Smiley

    Anybody knows how alpina creates the cars? Do they get fully ready and specced cars and then remove various parts and put their own? Or they get half ready cars and finish them?

    I think fully ready and specced and then they modify them, similar to Brabus. I do not know 100% though, just what I heard a couple of years ago.

    Back in the days, when they build the fantastic B10 BiTurbo on basis 535i, BMW delivered the stripped down car (but already painted, if I remember correctly). Basically this was a 535i with not many interior parts. Then Alpina took over, modified the engine and gave the car the Alpina interior, with special leather, wood and the typical green and blue stitching and accents.
    I think how much is done in Buchloe at Alpina depends on the model. You can get the lower models with the standard BMW interior for example, but the higher and more expensive you get, the more bespoke becomes the car.

    The front is growing on me. With the M3/4 body and or with the M Paket body on lower models the grille blends well IMO and the car looks dynamic.

    Colour is also more crucial with this new front. I wouldn't mind the new grille with a Mineral Grey or equivalent exterior colour or with a medium/dark blue colour.

    With the expected blend of performance, usability and driving entertainment  the M4 will be a bargain starting at below €100.000 (with plenty of equipment I presume),  a bit above a basic spec Cayman GTS 4.0.

    The snout on each one is hideous, no other way to describe it.

    Love the reclining, power buckets though. More for looks rather than weight-saving I guess.

    It's all relative.  The interior combination with the exterior looks rather strange too.

    The shape of the kidneys is interesting; I wish they kept them to a reasonable size (e.g., not extending above the headlights).

    well, considering the competition sports more or less (ok, less) the same design, the M3 looks not that bad...it is different...

    I saw the controversial 4 series coupe for the first time this morning when I went to the BMW dealer to service my car.

    The 4 on display was in Arctic Race Blue, a greyish blue with M exterior package and a black grille with these nice silver horizontal bits.

    The front looked totally inoffensive, to be honest and it blended well with the whole design. I cannot see what the fuss is except of the human attitude of resistance to change. The front of the car in reality looks better and harmonious than in pictures.

    The 4 coupe appealed to me as a  very good package. From the door backwards it resembles a small 8, rear accommodation  is OK for this type of car, definitely much better than 2+2 sportscars and the luggage area is very generous. The 6 cylinder Xdrive must be a superb daily drive and GT car and very affordable starting from €65.000 with good equipment as standard.
