I've read that there have been some issues with the 19 inch rims on the S. Some say they aren't gripping as well as they should and that the increase in size has made the car unstable. The sidewalls of the bigger tires are too hard, creating what you call a radial run-out or more commonly described as wandering, making it difficult to drive straight. I have a 997 C2 and was thinking of upgrading to 19's , mostly for looks but I don't want to compromise stability or safety. Has anyone made this transition and noticed these problems?
I've got 5K miles logged with 19" CC's, have experienced nothing resembling above.
What is your source for this report?
I beleive this is one of the comments made by one of the drivers on BMI in comparison to the base Carrera.
Thanks. I don't think we get Best MOtor Int'l (?) in the states.
Wow, I had not heard any behavior like that described in connection w/the 19's. Certainly is too bad the 19's are as heavy as they are-- 27 or 28 lbs. range for for 19" 997S rears sound portly compared to what else is out there.
As far as tracking a straight course, not sure what they mean by 'wandering' or maybe after awhile I'm just used to it. The 19's on my car always feel incredibly planted whether straight or lane changing, like the tires have NO CHOICE but to chart a straight course, has always intuitively felt that way due to the steamroller 295mm rear sections "PUSHING" my 997S straight....until I turn the steering wheel to interrupt the forward inertia developed by those rear slabs, then it carves arcs whichever way you point it.
A crude illustration of my theory (discount the underwire--errr, understeer...
good goobly goo, they must've had good drugs back then):
Increasingly, my question for Porsche: with metallurgical technology advanced to where it is today, couldn't Porsche offer as standard equip.-- or God forbid charge an extra $1K per car if they had to-- to put a team to work on shaving 4 to 6 lbs. off 19's wheels' current obesity, but maintain durability necessary to tackle our cruddy road surfaces?
Sorry to meander, enjoying a nice Sierra Nevada Stout, watching Broncos/Patriots.
