    Clear corners, clear bra

Hello all, first post here. Sorry if this is the wrong place for it, or if it's already been discussed; I didn't find anything on this subject when I searched this forum.

Generally, I abhor appearance mods. You won't find me sticking a wing on the car or any kind of body kit. However, one thing that kind of irritates me is that in all of the Porsche literature--brochures, posters, website, etc.--the Boxster is shown with clear turn signals. This is in the USA.

False advertising, if you ask me:

$30 later I had a couple of these from the dealership:

This guy's 986 clear corner guide made it apparent that it wouldn't be any problem. Although, geez, it kind of seems too easy to remove them!

    Before:

    After:

Still plenty of illumination at night--although the front half doesn't light up at all. Looks a lot more clean during the day.

Amber side markers have never bothered me in the past, but this time around I guess I had already become accustomed to seeing the clear corners on the car so this looks more "right".

When you pull the 987 clear corners out, the retainer gets bent out of shape though. This next picture shows what I mean, although I've already bent it back down some--it was pulled out a lot more than that. No big deal, just thought I'd mention it.

Also, here's the back of the two lights so you can see the difference in part numbers. The US amber corner marker is on the bottom:

Also, for anyone interested in putting a clear bra on your car, here's some pictures of the one on mine. You can see the reflection is a lot different than the paint, but it's not obvious in daylight unless you're trying to see the difference. Depending on which angle you're at too, you may or may not see the line.

I like it. I don't have to worry about rock chips anymore. A little pricey at $750 but it should protect the car's residual value somewhat and keep me happier anyhow.

    Re: Clear corners, clear bra

Welcome aboard and thanks for sharing your beautiful pictures.

Amber signal lights are per U.S. specs from the DOT; the same way that rear bumperettes are on U.S. spec cars and european models don't have it.

I think changing the amber lights is a MUST. Good job

    Re: Clear corners, clear bra

Oh wow, I didn't even realize the rear bumperettes are US-spec! I suppose they wouldn't be easy to remove though, probably would leave holes behind them, eh? A pity.

    Thanks.

    Re: Clear corners, clear bra

From what I've read on another site, only 1 state (Mississippi?) requires amber side markers. The other states will tolerate clear or amber. However, the bumperettes are there to meet federal requirements for the car to suffer minimal damage in a 5ph "collision." So, changing the sidelights won't affect legality for most US cars, but removing the bumperettes may mean you aren't able to pass your annual safety inspection, holes and greater damage on low speed impact aside.

    Re: Clear corners, clear bra

Thanks for the great photos! A group of us over here are in two-minds about getting clearbra, so it's good to see. Which supplier did you go with?

    Re: Clear corners, clear bra

I'm pretty sure the cops in southern california aren't too hip to clear corner modifications, but I think they target the teeny-bopper, import mod crowds more than Porsches. They definitely hassle people based on demographics. The bumperettes would go completely unnoticed by anyone out here and we don't have yearly vehicle inspections. Still, more work than it's worth, and it would probably look a little strange to not have the bumperettes with an American license plate, eh?

As far as the clear bra goes, I didn't go with any known supplier. We have a local shop here that does most of the Porsche body work for the area. They also do clear bras. I know the guys there so they cut me a deal. It's the standard 3M film, but that's about all I can tell you about it, sorry!

What are the pros and cons that your group are considering? I'll offer whatever input that I can.

I think the main thing is cost and quality of fit, which pre-cut kit to go for, how the edges look, and how it looks on different colours of paint.

Did your bodyshop cut the sheet themselves, or did they use a pre-cut kit?

Can you take some REAL closeup pics of the edges and joins, particularly around the bumper/lights? And some pics in daylight? And you don't know anyone with a black car that's had this done do you? Thanks in advance!

    Re: Clear corners, clear bra

Thanks for this perfectly timed post eslai. I got some clear side markers and am planning to replace the amber ones with them tomorrow. Glad to see it's as easy on the 987s as it looked on the 986.

    Re: Clear corners, clear bra

Grats to your car and thanks for the pictures, specifically of the clear bra.

Hmmm.. I'll see what I can do for you this weekend. I was told by the bodyshop that this was the first time they'd done a kit on a new Boxster--I'm not sure what kit they used but it definitely looks precut. He also said that the seal grey is a great color for the clear bra--the lines are very hard to see on that color--I'd imagine they'd be somewhat easier to see on a darker car.

My guy did a little bit of extra work for me too. He also did the headlights in a much thicker film. He also put some pieces along the rears of the fenders to protect them from rocks flung up by my own tires. I don't believe those were part of the kit.

The pieces on the headlights might need to be re-done though. The edges don't seem to be sticking to the curvature of the headlight very well. A pity.

    Re: Clear corners, clear bra

Good on Seal: That's what we like to hear! Mine's Seal.

Further Question (hope you don't mind the grilling!):
In the corners of the film, is the corner rounded off? I've seen this done (Ente just posted some pics) and didn't know if it was the way that ALL kits are cut, to help prevent the corners peeling up.

How thick is your main film compared to the standard Porsche fitted film on the rear wheel-arches? The sample bit of film I've seen is a little thicker.

Apparrently the lights/fogs *may* be less prone to chips, as they are plastic not glass, so it may not matter so much if the film peels off them.

Look forward to some more pics. Thanks again!
