    New M5 Sound

if the real thing really sounds like that, then they've nailed it vs X5/6 M:

Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.

    Re: New M5 Sound

Sounds awesome. A little more worthy of the car than the last gen.

    Re: New M5 Sound

     It sound really good!!

    Re: New M5 Sound

Can't help me, it sounds noisy enough but still like a exaggerated Golf GTI with a cheap aftermarket exhaust. There's nothing to hear from a well composed V8 growl. Yes I know, w're talking about a biturbo engine and therefore about limits in the development but still..... Compared to the X5/6 M it's an improvement of course...

Amazing growl for a Turbo engine, very good option for those looking for exotic performance on a "vulgar" looking car, personaly I like that mix.

It sounds better than on the X5/X6M but still... Smiley

A SUV needs a deep V8 growl, the tuned GTI sound is more suitable for the M5.

Have you guys listened to the AMG's new bi-turbo engine?  Why is it that AMG can develop a great sounding turbo engine but no one else seem to be able to???

    Very good question!!
Don't understand BMW's sounddesigner. We often get told that this depends on the very special manifold which delivers the spontaneous acceleration at low revs.
Apparently Mercedes could solve the problem Smiley

BMW uses, from my memory as the only manufacturer yet, an exhaust manifold that lies within the V of the two cylinderbanks and distributes the exhaust gases of both sides to the two turbochargers, instead of one charger per cylinderbank. Due to the layout the response of the turbochargers is said to improve but on the other hand it alters the exhaust sound significantly.

I have no background information but assume that on the 997 Turbo, the newly established VTG chargers demanded a careful setup of the exhaust backpressure which would naturally be more complicated if the exhaust is using actuated flaps as on the PSE system. Whether it is due to Wiedeking´s economical considerations or not, it would significantly increase the price but obviously is a tad too civilized for a few customers.

The new V8 biturbo from AMG indeed features a great sound, it was certainly necessary to finetune the sound but the engine itself offers a solid basis for that.

    Re: New M5 Sound

Not bad, but I still like the old song of the last generation's V10 better.

    Re: New M5 Sound

Here's Akrapovic' effort on the new M5... Not bad, but far from what the E39 produced, changing times I guess.

    Re: New M5 Sound

I happen to like it, would like to hear it under driving conditions.

    On a sidenote...

Maybe it has something to do with company "exhaust sound philosophy" ?

Currently, I wonder if a loud exhaust sound is actually a good thing.

    Let me explain why:

I was driving our Countryman Cooper S on the same street I usually drive my 997 Carrera GTS with PSE. This street has a 100 kph speed limit and connects two small villages but it is actually not outside, it is difficult to explain. Apparently they "forgot" to post a speed limit.

Usually, I fully accelerate on this small portion of street and with the PSE flaps on all the time, this sound is just amazing. People walking on the boardwalk usually show me the finger or a fist...Germany at it's finest (keep in mind that I never drive faster than the 100 kph speed limit).

So I drove this very same street with the Mini Countryman Cooper S, doing the same, fully accelerating. Lots of people were on the boardwalk but none of them turned around or bothered to care, despite the fact that I was actually driving the same speed as in my GTS.

Bottom line is: Loud exhaust systems may sound nice for us but they are also screaming "here I come...". Not really good for a neighborhood where people aren't too fond of loud exhaust sounds.

So maybe a not so loud exhaust sound isn't that bad at all, especially in regions with people who seem to hate cars...as long as these aren't theirs. Smiley

    Re: New M5 Sound

I just think it has everything to do with BMW M's placement of the turbochargers inside the cylinder banks and the firing order compared to AMG's 5.5 V8?

I don't think there are any social motivations behind it.

    Re: New M5 Sound

I never get that reaction in London when I keep the PSE on. People walking on the pavement look but don't say anything.

I often find other cars simply move aside on the A roads to let me past. I never ever get that when I'm driving my wife's BMW.

Hey RC, maybe the difference it`s in the car and not on the noise.... people do get envy with "porsche sounds" Smiley (same where in Portugal...)

    Re: New M5 Sound

RC, People are just a bunch of jealous c***s. I say finger back at em

    Re: New M5 Sound

I have a simple test case for you RC: don't use the PSE and do the same. If people will react the same, either the standard Porsche sound it's too much or is simple 911 envy :)

The times they are a changing...

A loud and aggressive exhaust note is no longer widely accepted. There has been a certain jester's licence for extreme cars like Ferrari or Lamborghini for example, but in my opinion this is long gone. In times of soundless e-mobiles the (very) loud sportscars seem to be a dying breed. And to be honest, after many years with loud Italian cars (that even got louder over the years), I fully enjoy the brute but nearly silent power of the Turbo. Smiley

    Re: New M5 Sound

guess that is why 'push of a buttom" came up in various cars now - I usually also switch to "silent" when entering a town....having a switch is a very good compromise

    Re: New M5 Sound

Not the best quality, but driving situation nonetheless:

    Re: New M5 Sound

I think this will go some way to ensuring at least the driver enjoys a good soundtrack!

    Re: New M5 Sound

Most of car magazines already tested the new M5. All of them are VERY impressed by the overall package.

This (M5) was allways my 1st choise for a super sedan, i`m glad the new one is still a very god one.
