I don't know about the UK, but here in the U.S., the specs say that the 3.4 will do 0-60 in a second less than the 3.2. Some are reacting with glee over this "advancement" and saying it will make the 3.2 models less desirable. I think it makes them more desirable because you can now pick up an '06 off the dealer lot for thousands less than an '07 with a negligible difference in performance and no difference whatsoever in the outward look of the car. Anyone who thinks that an additional 15hp is a great technological achievement is drinking -- no, guzzling -- the Porsche Kool-Aid. Meanwhile, BMW's Z4M is well into the 300s in hp and the M3 coupe is said to be coming in at 400. Now, that's a real difference.
One more point, and this depends on where you live: here in the New York suburbs, I began averaging 32 mph when I first got my car. Now, I'm down to 30 mph average. As we all cheer for the horsepower race, there are fewer and fewer places to use it, unless you track your car. Some days, I'm sorry I didn't get the 2.7 and load up the car with more options.

Ah, understand where you are coming from now, and I have to agree. Well, partly. There is a bit more to the 3.4 than just 15bhp, of course, the variocam plus valve timing makes the engine more free breathing and thus freer revving and more responsive higher up than the 3.2. This is not Porsche BS, just drive the Cayman S to feel and hear the difference. Even with 295bhp and fancy valve-timing Porsche are not even close in the hp race. I don't know if you've driven the Z4 but I have and it is a poor excuse for a sports car. Uncomfortable, unwieldly and personally I don't like either the external or internal looks. The Z4M is just a faster version of the same thing.
Also there is more to a sports car than just bhp. A Porsche feels somehow special at any speed, the whole experience from the build quality, thoughtful, understated engineering and overall precison and competence shines through in a way that no BMW ever could. I wouldn't exchange a current Boxster for a BMW Z4, not even a Boxster 2.7 for the Z4M model.
Our roads in the UK are probably even more congested than yours, all the more important to have a car whose abilities you can appreciate at any speed. So what is the point of having a car that has 350, 400 or even 500 bhp which you can never use, which really negates your own argument that Porsche are falling way behind in the bhp race, when those figures are only any good for bragging about, and no use at all in the real world. I'd much rather Porsche concentrate on honing the important points, which is what the've done with the 3.4, than go down BMW's route of just producing impractical, uncomfortable and unweildly chest-wig cars.

Point well put there DC. As much as I would like Porsche to be a bit more generous with the HP, today, driving about in my boxster, with the "small" amount of hp it has, still felt superb!
Still have an order in for the next M3, but each day that goes by makes me think that I will not be taking that order as BM's just do not have that certain apeal that a Porker does.

Yep.
We sold our March 05 Boxster S a month ago to the supplying dealer. Cobalt blue Boxster S 3.4 on order from them, due for delivery end of September - early October.

Because I took up one of my dealer's reserved slots for September build I only had five days to decide on the spec, so no time for agonizing or changing my mind.

Just tried my friend's brand new 06 Cayman S, gee that thing pulls a lot stronger around town than my 3.2, guess that's helped by both 200extra cc + variocam plus. With my 3.2 it doesn't pull as strongly from 2.5k rpm as if there's a flat spot there, the 3.4 is so much more willing to revv makes it even more enjoying to drive in slow going traffic. But I would wait for bigger upgrades 1st like FSI and PDK...
But the conclusion is, the 3.4 feels stronger than just having extra 15hp and the torque curve feels more linear.
