    quality!

I took delivery of a 997s last Friday afternoon. After reading previous threads on attention to detail at the factory, I took special care to inspect things mentioned like seal and filter installation. I can say that attention was certainly given to my car. Build quality is superb. Perfect in every way. Having a bit of trouble following the manual on the break in period ... 2000 miles is an extremely long time not to exceed 4200 rpm. Any thoughts?

    Re: quality!

I agree on the break in. Do what you think is right, I pushed it a bit before then. I thought it was 1,600 miles btw. Oh well, too late

    Re: quality!

good for you! congrats for the new ride! your build quality doesn't make me feel beeter about mine though.... :-(

    Re: quality!

Someone on another post said they had taken delivery from the factory and had been told there, off the record, that the 3,000km (2,000 miles) recommendation was because they had found customers were disregarding the previous 1,500km recommendation by a factor of 50%! With their new recommendation, they now anticipated customers staying under 4,200 RPM for at least 1,500km, which is their actual goal!

I got mine three weeks ago and took to heart this advice!

But I won't really push it until I hit the 2,000 mile mark.

    Re: quality!

Congrats and don't forget to post pictures.

My 997 has been impacable regarding build quality since I took delivery a few months ago. I have now almost 6000 km on the speedo and no quality issue, no technical problem, nothing. There is a strange (almost non-audible) noise coming from the clutch when I accelerate from standstill but this noise is only sometimes present and only in the upper 1/3 when I release the clutch pedal.
It doesn't seem to affect clutch functionality but there is an inquiry in Weissach regarding this noise because no other cars seems to have it. I really expect them to dismantle the clutch one day to see what is wrong but as I said before, no clutch functionality problem.

I'm very happy with my 997, I wish I could say the same about the weather over here.

Piece of cake. You are aware that frisky driving IS encouraged. Don't baby the thing. Shift alot, vary engine speed and work it hard. BUT do NOT floor it (i.e. give full throttle) even if staying under 4200.

Oh, the hard part is lots of warm-up to cool-down cycles are better than one or two long drives.

Here's another tidbit. When you do get to 2000 you have a few days of cheap thrills finding out what the car can do; during that time making yourself very vulnerable to getting nailed by cops.

Then after a week or so you probably will go back to driving sensibly, as if you were breaking the car in!

So, to put it onto perspective, you hit 2000 miles, you go nuts for a few days and then everything settles down, its not like you get a permanent high for the next 50,000 miles.

I know what you mean. It was almost 80 degrees here in LA today.

And gorgeous sunsets also. Two weeks ago, the sunset over Malibu was fantastic, this weekend, the sunset over Santa Barbara was awesome. Perfect weather for driving your Porsche with your girlfriend/mistress/wife.

I heard the exact opposite would be the most senseful thing!

The reason for this is metalurgical; concerning a newly-cast metal's memory. The heat up and cool down (expansion and contraction) cycles establish the specific shape (measured in thousandths) the alloy will eventually stablize into.

You want this memory established early on while the parts are seating themselves. This is done by taking short trips where the engine goes thru more heat and col cycles.

It's not that you want to drive the car while it is cold, it means you want to drive the car at proper operating temp, and then shut it off and let it sit until stone cold.

'swhat I read somewhere. I think it makes better sense than justdriving the car in one non-stop trip across country (varying engine speed etc)to break it in.

Would be nice to ask the experts this, as I say I'm just repeating what I read at some "reputable" website.
