    Can I buy a 997S?

It is very difficult to ask things like this. I need your feed back.

I like and respect Porsche and specially like 997S. I like sports cars so I drive Miata (MX-5) daily and sometimes on race track for fun.

Now, I want to buy a 997S but someone in my head tells me NOT. It is more like, "am I allowed to own a Porsche?" Because, I live in an apartment, not a house with a garage to keep a Porsche safe and clean. I have a parking space under ground of apt building. If I buy one and park in an apt parking lot, I feel like it is an insult to the car. It is a gated parking, but who knows what's going to happen once people see the beautiful 997S? What is social expectation of owing a Porsche? I just want to enjoy driving a quality sports car.

Should I buy a house with a garage and postpone a Porsche till 998? Nuts or what?

    Re: Can I buy a 997S?

Carpe diem man, just get the car. I see your point, but it's cool.
    That's the good thing about a 911, people don't know if it's the new one, it's just a 911.
You can get a 911 for quite a small price these days.
Get it in darker color if you want less attention but get it!
It's not a matter of if you're allowed to own a Porsche.
You know, at the end of the day, it's just a piece of metal.
If you've got the right attitude, you'll be fine. Smile to people, stop to let pedestrians cross, don't rev at a red light, don't look like an arse hole basically.
    Enjoy!

    Re: Can I buy a 997S?

I have exactly the same worries over the 987 I've ordered. I also live in a modest house, albeit with a garage, and I'm not on film star money. Head says don't do it, save the money for your pension. Heart says you only live once so enjoy life and you might not reach pension age anyway. At the end of the day it's what you want that matters, don't worry about what other people think!

    Re: Can I buy a 997S?

Life is one...and also if is not easy to do..enjoy it,if you can!

    in life there are priorities..

If Porsche for you is a priority...buy one!

    For me it is...

    Ciao
    Dario
p.s.Priorities are not the same for all people...

    Re: Can I buy a 997S?

Do it. You only live once. I park both of my cars on the street.

    Re: Can I buy a 997S?

You can park a 911 on the street because it has a understated beauty to it but I bet you wouldn't park a Carrera GT on the street though if you owned one...

Well said! You drive a car for yourself, not for anyone else. And you can't insult a car. It is a thing, not a human being.

    Re: Can I buy a 997S?

It try to be short (yeah, I know, not one of my virtues... ):

    1. the MX-5 is no sportscar, not even close to it.
    2. see point 1 -> think very well about buying a 997 S, this is a different kind of car
    3. the social "impact" depends on how old you are, what business you're running and in what country you live.

Garage insult to the car? Now this is something new to me.

Give us more details and we might be able to help.

You've asked at the wrong place if you want 2 sided advice

    JUST DO IT.

And if you think the Miata is a sports car, you are in for ONE HELL of a ride when you get into the 997S. Have you test driven a Porsche .... go check it out... it's only going to seal the deal for sure !!!

it would be new to me that only house owners with a dedicated garage are allowed to keep porsches

in large cities it's quite common to live in a flat, isn't it? at least i do -- and my porsche is parking in the backyard under a kind of car port. every neighbour can see it (and could touch it )...

the point is, you need to feel comfortable with the car. maybe you should ask for a test drive -- you'll soon notice if the car and the attention it gets is too much for you.

if you like the car (and have the money), then do it. get a fully comprehensive cover and don't worry about things that might happen. vandalism can hit you anywhere anyway.

    Re: Can I buy a 997S?

I would do it. If you are really concerned about affording it, then buy a used 911. If you are worried about someone damaging the car, that's what insurance is for. And, an MX-5 Miata is more of a sports car than a 997 in my opinion. It's half the weight and it's a roadster (based on the old Lotus Elan - a classic sports car). The 997 is a GT car that happens to be very fast and rather agile (based on the 1965 911 which in its day was also considered a GT car). It is much easier to get into trouble with inattentive or unskilled driving with the 997, but not because it's more of a sports car than the MX-5. Treat it with respect and learn to drive it well and you'll be fine (and very entertained).

    Re: Can I buy a 997S?

Grant, what would then be considered a high end "sports car"?

Ferrari F360, Enzo, Carrera GT, Boxster S, Lotus Elise, Corvette, Noble M12, Lambos, GT2, GT3, Caterham, etc. Of this list the Caterham is the most "Sports" car and the Enzo is the most "high-end". Everyone has their own criteria, but mine are not so much about how fast it is (heck, a Mercedes SL65 is VERY fast, but it's also a 5,000 lb yatch with no driving excitement) and more about focused lightweight 2-seaters. There are precious few true sports cars these days

    Re: Can I buy a 997S?

GO FOR IT, the faster you buy the car the better. Let me tell you I have my Boxster S parked in the garage under our apartment complex and if anybody believes this is odd, they are ever so welcome - WHY ? Because I have all the plassure !!!

Being from Denmark where anybody who is just a little bit outside the crowd is seen upon with strange eyes, I have a feeling that I know what you are referring to, but that does not change anything in my mind....

    Re: Can I buy a 997S?

    Grant,

I wholeheartedly agree with you: the MX-5 is definitely a sportscar. I guess it all depends on one's definition of sportscar, but I do think, in many ways, it's more of a sportscar than a 996 or 997 (which are more GT-ish). The MX-5 is light, nimble, quick--it's everything a sports car should be. And it's a ragtop. It lacks some power, and it doesn't have the prestige of a Porsche, but it's a great car. Very tossable and fun to drive.

    Re: this is where...

Thank you all for the inputs. I see some are parking it on a street, that's tough.

Rookie, you are good. Yes, I'm a Japanese.

I live in Nor Cal in the US where Porsche is not rare at all. However, I see Boxsters but not 911 in my apt parking lot. This is a baaad place that house is so expensive that buying 997S seems better deal than getting a house (at least to me).

I drove friend's 993 and 996 before so I can be sure that 997 will be even better and I will like it. Yes, life is short and it is mine so why not enjoy it huh?

MX-5 Miata is nothing close to 997S that's why I'm thinking buying one. I don't find anything good in between. But did you know that some MX-5s are faster than slow 911s on a track.

Absolutely - I've even seen MX-5's pass fast 911's (including Turbos) on the track. A fast car with a poor driver = a slow car on the track. I didn't mean to suggest that an MX-5 is a good substitute for a 997 ("there is no substitute" and all that jazz), but it certainly is a sports car. I think you'll be very happy with the 997

Buddy, if I could afford a Carrera GT, I could also afford a house with a garage

    Re: Can I buy a 997S?

Grant, many of the cars you mentioned are larger and heavier than the 911. Both Lambos are very heavy (The Gallardo is smaller than the 997S but heavier) and the F360 is only slightly lighter than the 997S, the Corvette (C5) is larger and heaver aswell.

Actually, the Corvette is considerably lighter than the 997. The Z06 is 3,100 lbs in street trim, while an average 996C2 is well over 3,200 lbs (despite Porsche's figures), the 997 is heavier still.

Yes, the lambos are a bit heavy, but they are true 2-seaters and quite focused sportscars (although I could do without the AWD).

but believe it or not-- in my part of town (very populated university district, mostly 100+ years old buildings -- so nearly no underground parking) this is THE parking space!

with a 24-7-guard it would be perfect

    Re: this is where...

Playing devil's advocate here, but if you had to chose between a car and a house. I'd go for the house. One is an appreciating asset, especially in NOCAL, the car is on of the worst assets to own.

And I agree the MX5 Miata is definitely a sports car. No arguments. It totally revitalized the sports car market in the US. And was directly responsible for the Boxster, SLK, Z3, TT, S2000 and a bunch of other cars. And for that we should all be thankful.

That said, nothing beats owning a new Porsche.

I spent some time in Tokyo ... so your considerations sounded familiar to me

But ... nevertheless ... go for the car ... if it makes you feel better than buying a house. And ... after all ... who knows how long you will stay in Nor Cal ... and selling a house is definetly more trouble than moving to SoCal in your 997

    Re: this is where...

Would you take a LHD car to Japan?

Nice idea, tori! I also couldn't find too much spectacular cars this side of a Porsche - and I would also consider the 997 and not the current Boxster (maybe the upcoming 987?)!

Depends how your life will continue - I wouldn't spend all my money on a car. But, I suppose your end of 20ies or slightly above, this is the time to buy a sportscar to be young, in fifteen years you will buy it to feel young, in 30 years you'll buy it to remember the fun you had in the past... No, no, just joking. But I still believe there lies some truth in it, doesn't it?
Don't forget, I am also getting older - so no excuse not to take this to myself!

    Re: this is where...

I visited two Porsche dealers around here. Try to find a good dealer to work with since it is not a cheap shopping. I want to buy a 997S from a dealer that easy to work with. I found some interesting things, today.

Dealer A: Up on an order, $5K deposit and it is not refundable! They have enough allocations that I could get an October build car delivered by end of Nov.

Dealer B: $1K deposit and $4K additional before production. This $5K is refundable in case of some accident. They say it is illegal to forfeit down payment without selling a car in CA. They also say I could get October build car for my configuration.

Dealer A has a nicer looking show room but once they told me forfeiting down payment, I got discouraged. I understand they are doing business but so many things can happen in a life while waiting for the car.

Interestingly, I could get a 997S by end of Nov this year if I place an order now. I thought all 997S are gone for this year because I see people posting waiting delivery for next spring. I guess number of allocation is different for each country or dealer? Or maybe Porsche is planing to build a lot of them very quickly?

By the way, I saw a Carrera GT in a dealer today. It is a beautiful car. All carbon frame engine compartment was open to show. It had a price tag $100K above MSRP. Some people looking at the car were wearing gold Rolex with diamond bezel watches. I guess the watch cost more than my MX-5, maybe?

    Re: this is where...

Well, the Rolexes might be borrowed... haha!

I think there should be enough people on the board that could give you advice for an appropriate dealer!

You should get at least a car built in Oct., because cars built after holidays should be '05 model with several more option available from then on!

Oh, and don't judge dealers by their showroom!
