    Porsche 911 GT3 (2013) CAR review

     -- Article by Georg Kacher

    (17 July 2013)

It's no forgone conclusion we'll love the new 991-generation Porsche 911 GT3. With electrically-assisted steering, a new direct-injection engine, rear-wheel steering and no manual gearbox, it's a sea-change from past hardcore Porsches. But has Porsche pulled off the gamble and done justice to the GT3 badge?

So what’s new about the GT3’s engine?

The new direct injection 3.8-litre flat-six makes 469bhp – up 30bhp compared to the outgoing car – and requires 6250rpm to dish up maximum torque, which at 325 lb ft is no more than the Carrera S but is 8 lb ft more than the last GT3. It’s not as smooth-running and refined as the other Porsche sixes, but there’s super-fast throttle response and only Italian exotics can match its enthusiasm to rev to an astonishing 9000rpm. It’s impossible not be smitten by the soundtrack, too – how legal approval for this decibel feast was obtained amazes me.

There’s no manual – so is the PDK paddleshift transmission up to it?

The very first thing you notice when pulling the GT3’s solid aluminium upshift paddle is that the travel towards the steering wheel has been cut in half, a small touch that cleverly conveys a sense of mechanical precision and immediacy. And if that’s not quick enough, hit the Race Track button and brace yourself for 100ms upshifts – they’re every bit as fast, hard and spine-tingling as those in the 911 Cup racecar. I don’t miss the manual ’box one bit.

How does the handling stack up?

Below 30mph, rear-wheel countersteer makes the GT3 feel like a short-wheelbase microcar. At more than 50mph, the rear wheels move in sync with the fronts, generating a reassuring long-wheelbase effect. Even without last year´s car available for reference, it’s obvious that the new model feels notably more agile as well as more laid back. The times of fighting the front end, the rear end, the road, the conditions and the flame of anxiety inside are definitely over.

Does the electric steering spoil the party?

No. The GT3’s quicker and stiffer rack rests more self-assuredly in your palms, even if it doesn’t communicate any more clearly than the Carrera. Turn-in is now ludicrously quick – this newly discovered run-on-rails cornering style must be due to the stabilising effect of the rear-wheel steering, along with the shaved and sticky 20in Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres.

How much weight does all the new GT3 tech add?

Thanks to the aluminium-intensive body structure, the 991 GT3 tips the scales at 1430kg, barely 35kg more than the less powerful, less technically advanced model it replaces. Don't forget, previous 911 GT3s used the narrow bodystyle too, whereas the 991 GT3 uses the wider rear arches from the 991 Carrera 4. With that in mind, the GT3’s modest weight gain is somewhat impressive.

    Verdict

The message to hardliners is: don’t worry. All the trademark GT3 entertainment values are still present in this car, standing proud and tall. The bonus is that the GT3’s appeal is broader than before.

    Porsche 911 GT3 (2013) CAR review

     -- Article by Georg Kacher

"While the winged wonder from Weissach may have lost some of its rough edges, it has at the same time acquired important new qualities. Like a supreme sense of balance, a higher level of tactility, more potent and more progressive action, a creamier behaviour at the limit of adhesion as well as amazingly articulated feedback."

"The message to hardliners is don’t worry, all the trademark GT3 entertainment values are still there, standing proud and tall. Some buyers will never be convinced, however, and for them there's still hope: the upcoming 911 GT3 RS is rumoured to be as blunt a weapon as the diehards could ever wish for, and the engineers haven't yet ruled out an optional manual gearshift..."

I loved the way he tweaked the throttle to keep the car in balance. He certainly was one of a kind.

My point is, whithin 5-10 years of Porsche phasing out all manual transmissions, and with a new generation of drivers , many not yet old enough right now to even drive,  who will  only know clutches as something ancient used by their grey haired dads and uncles, this MT phase out discussion will be long forgotten.

Totally agree.  The whole PDK vs. manual debate is mostly defined by generation change.  The majority of current generation of drivers favor PDK, and this majority will become virtually the monopoly with the next generations, since they will not have experienced the pleasure of MT. This, factored in with the undeniable technical advantages of PDK, makes its advent and the demise of MT inevitable.

I am from a generation who mostly think "heel and toe" refers only to body parts... Most of this generation and those after it will never know what it is like to enjoy driving like this:

    http://youtu.be/8By2AEsGAhU

That masterful pedal box action video is probably as boring  to a current new 16 y/o driver as was watching  double clutch shifting on a non -synchromeshed  manual gear box was to me as a youngster in the 1960s- something long departed  " old guys" with first gen British sports cars relished as a way to really feel at one with a car on a winding road.

I LOVE manual boxes but am perfectly fine with  their coming extinction- as technology and new generations of people  move ahead . ( Heck, I remember just the 1980s when REAL sports cars like 911, Ferrari and Lambo had NO power steering and a test of manliness was parallel parking without inducing a hernia !)

That's an interesting combo. I would have the mirrors in black, yellow or carbon though.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

Sorry, that color is just awful on a sport car. If you want a car to look bad just paint it in that color. Drab, unexciting and lack of sexiness.

I too think that is a great color for the GT3.  I have had a couple of cars very close to that color including a Studebaker Avanti and a Porsche 356.   Of course, I didn't purchase those cars new.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

That color would look MUCH better with the silver painted wheel option to provide the much needed contrast.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

The only color I care about are the green traffic lights ahead and open blacktop!  Colors again?  Not a care about manual vs. PDK or loss of dry sump engine - colors...  I will take mine in black :-)

Since the 996.2 my favourite was white, eventhough i started to hate the fact that 8 out of 10 997.1 cars were white, but now red seems to be my new favourite color for the GT3.

The 991 GT3 (or 991 GT3 RS) would look very cool in Atlas Grey... Smiley

Some people love to be fast, others love to look fast. Smiley Smiley

Attracting too much attention in a GT3 (or Turbo S for that matter...) is nice in front of a night club or driving down Collins Av. in Miami Beach Smiley but over here in Europe, you are happy if you do not attract too much attention, especially when you are going fast. You know that, Markus. Smiley

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 911 GT3 (991)

No need to worry Christian. With your color nobody will notice whether you are going fast or slow. Seriously, in my view if you are going to spend over $200,000 for a car it should be noticeable and not look like a salvage car from a military car pool.

My advice is if you can change color DO IT!kiss

That is Aqua Blue, Sapphire isn't available for the regular 991, it's GT3 only. Here is Sapphire.
