    Thought this was cool, so I'll post it here. This was from the Unreal Engine event at GDC. For those that don't know, UE is an engine used mainly for game development, but has many uses in just about anything CG and interactive, and is being used more and more outside of gaming.

    McLaren is creating a new configurator for customers, as well as using it in-house for design purposes. It's pretty awesome. I linked 5 minutes into it since the beginning is more technical. It uses 100% of the CAD data, so the configurator it a 100% representation of the car and can be viewed as such, or at least what they program in as far as interactive functionality. The 10 minute mark is particularly cool.

    Silverstone last week. LT vs RS. LFA was meant to be the third contender but the car didn't start, battery issue. So took my CRT instead (massive amount of fun).

    In short, my feeling was pretty spot on for the RS. I said it would shine on the track, it was more than that, it was bonkers. I was really amazed at how good it was, yes it's boring on the road because of the auto box and too much grip but on the track, it's a weapon. Really exceptional. It's quite possibly the best trackday car I've ever owned, also because with aids left on, it's easy to drive, my mates had a riot and they don't have my experience.

    The LT was sublime but a bit too soft. even on the track settings the car never feels as planted as the RS. It's much faster, it's almost got 200hp more and close to 100kg lighter so no surprise here but it's less dramatic because the noise is not as good as the RS and unlike the RS where the car is alive at high revs, it seems the power band is flat after 7000rpm, surely a consequence of the turbo. The brakes are immense but the pedal feel is too soft for me. The RS brake pedal is better (I have steel brakes). The auto box is better in the LT. The paddles too. I don't like the RS paddles, they are too small and too far inwards of the steering wheel.

    It was early days for both cars though the RS only had 900km on the clock and the LT was brand new so they will losen up. Next track day early April.

    One other thing is grip level, much higher on the RS, again no surprised here, aero + mechanical grip. The rear tyres on the RS are 325 which makes for great traction. That would explain why despite the weight and power deficit, I reckon the RS not that much slower than the LT against the clock. Tyres on the RS are Cup 2 and Trofeo R on the LT. Pretty similar performance in terms of grip I'd say.

    My mates generally loved the LT because it's easier to drive and softer on approach, that was interesting. One of my friend had never done a trackday before, nor driven powerful cars, he immediately felt comfortable and had fun in the LT but was on the back foot with the RS.

    To sum up, the RS delivered more than I thought on the track. It completes my 997RS perfectly. The 997 is better on the road, the 991 is a more efficient a track tool.

    The LT was great on the track (and really amazing on the road, which ultimately is what counts), a bit too soft for me, but very good fun nonetheless.

    Love the comparison Futch! Would've never considered the LT to be the softer of the two on track, is it possible the setup can afford to be a little softer since it has less weight and a lower center of gravity to haul around, or would you reckon it would still benefit from a harder setup? Did you notice any lack of LSD?

    Futch, your post made my day . Thanks for sharing . The LT and the RS are my current favorite modern sports cars . I can't wait to be back on the track with mine to start to explore it a little bit more . Trying to plan  Imola end of April

    Porker, no I think the LT is just a more softly setup car which makes it more chuckable on the road, steering is also much better than the RS.

    I didn't notice the lack of LSD in the LT nor did I notice the RWS on the RS.

    Singer was brought along for the drive to the track, she's nice but also major pain, because it's a hand made car I have lots of technical problems with, it's annoying.

    Futch, thanks for the report!  So are you keeping the 991 GT3 RS after all?  Also, any reason you went for the steel brakes this time, I remember you usually spec the PCCB on your Porsche.

    Yes Ziggy, not only will I stick with the RS for now, but I reckon that the LT might probably go before too. Exceptionnal car but not a long term keeper (nor the 991RS mind you). Very good cars but not special enough for me like the LFA, Carrera GT, 993RS, etc.

    Steel brakes because PCCB are expensive as an option, expensive to replace and my mate Romain Dumas who drives for the factory told me the Steel are just as good.

    After the day spent at Silverstone abusing the car, and I mean, really abusing, I can confirm the steel are just as good as the PCCB.

    No, it's a very pretty car but as a road car, the steering feedback of the 991 has failed to convince me so far, for me feedback is more important than performance (on the road).

    It's better looking than the RS for sure but the lack of rear seats means I cannot take my little boy with me, so purely as a pleasure road car for example, for me the 997 RS 4.0 is similar (500hp, manual) and better in every aspects.

    I also believe than 991 cars is a lot for a limited edition. I have however put my name down for the GT2RS. If the weight is contained, it should be a really good car. Power confirmed at 700hp. Would be nice to get manual option too, it will suit the turbo engine character quite well.

    If I let go of my 997.1 RS I will let you know. I might at some point decide to try the 3.8.

    Yep in the 997.2 RS, you have a lower 4.0:1 Ring & Pinion and a taller 6th gear to compensate to maintain Vmax and good highway driving.  So gears 1 through 5 are lower than in 997.2 Non-RS (and 997.1 GT3/RS too).

    Yes, you need 996 GT3 or earlier to go without PASM.
