I almost bought a Ferrari for $2,000 today

    Hi,

Dont worry, it was just an Acer notebook branded under Ferrari name . It was too flashy and expensive with really limited options (sounds familiar, Nick? ). So in the end I bought Acer Aspire 2020 with every thing I wanted and no Ferrari name on it .

Now I finally can use Graemlins in my posts! Before I was using Apple and its Safari browser didnt allow me doing it. So execuse me if I use Graemlins too much this week

Re: I almost bought a Ferrari for $2,000 today

Expensive and limited options? Must not be the Acer Ferrari 3200 I'm thinking about then....that Acer kills the 2020.

Wouldn't be sure about "killing", at least not regarding battery life. Graphics card seems to be the same and the Intel 1.6 GHz M processor has almost the same processor performance as the 2.8 Athlon. 64-bit? Who needs it?

BTW: the new Sony Vaio VGN-S1XP (not sure about the same name in all countries) is coming soon.
It has only a weight of 1.9 kg (over 1 kg less than the Acer laptops), 13'' screen, Radeon 9700 card with 64 MB, WLan, DVD-R/RW, etc. I saw a sample at my dealer a few days ago and I was pretty impressed. It is great for travel and you can even play some games on it.

Right now I'm using a Sony TR1-MP with a retrofitted DVD-burner, this little thing is just great. You can't play with it of course but for it's size, it is fantastic.
The newest from the TR-series is the TR5-MP now, incl. DVD burner.

I also saw the Sony Vaio X505 at my dealer, it weights less than 900 g and is under 1 cm thick. Looking great and performance is more than satisfactory for business use.
    A little bit pricey though.

We must think alike. I'm using the TR2AP3 (DVD/CDRW, PM-1ghz, 1g RAM). I think it's great. I assume you are aware of this website: Sony TR World

I just wish it were a bit more rugged. I may get an IBM X-40 next time, even though it gives up the DVD.

Re: I almost bought a Ferrari for $2,000 today

Well, limited options for me. I wanted video card of at least 128mb ATI or GeForce (I do a lot of video editing), then 1.8GHz Celeron, 1MB cashe, combo super drive to burn CDs and DVDs as well etc. Basically PC desktop replacement.

Had in the past Sony notebook and didnt like it since the third party hardware some times dont fit well. Have X40 IBM notebook from work, great notebook!

Hey Lev, once you buy a Ferrari your Porsche will be your second car ah maybe third or fourth.

Re: I almost bought a Ferrari for $2,000 today

    Nick,

I couldnt even buy a Ferrari notebook and you are talking about the car.

For me to buy a Ferrari, means that I must have in my garage GT3, CGT, MaserQ, Lotus Espirit TT V8. Seems like a long way to go...but somehow I am ok with that :-)

I see you are back to using your Apple ....... no graemlins in this post.

I hope that doesn't mean you crashed your Acer notebook during your daily drive to work.

Thanks for the link, no...I didn't know about it.
I want to go for the Sony Vaio S1-XP next because it is only slightly bigger than the TR series but offers everything I need.
I do a lot of work with Photoshop and Premiere, so I need a fast processor and a fast video card.
My wife uses a Tablet PC, a Toshiba Portege M200, pretty cool thing. She installed the Windows XP SP2 Preview which adds Tablet PC 2005 (Longstar) to the Tablet PC.
It is incredible how she can write with her own hand on the screen and the writing is translated into printed words.
The recognition rate is almost 100%, unbelievable.
She's a physician and needs to take notes, the Tablet PC is absolutely perfect.
BTW: I use Linux on my private Webserver and in my business but I also like Windows XP very much. I installed a Windows 2003 Server for my wife in her practice with Windows XP clients. Just wanted to point this out, I'm not somebody who worships the one or the other.
And my Satellite Receiver works with Linux too...

Re: I almost bought a Ferrari for $2,000 today

    Fritz,

    My Acer is ok thanks

First floor library I have my Acer and second floor my Powerbook, both work just fine though I replaced the Airport station with Linksys wireless modem

So it really depends at what floor I am I guess

Re: I almost bought a Ferrari for $2,000 today

    RC, one silly question:

how can you handle all your hobbies in one life?
