Mercedes CL 65 AMG and why Porsche might be in trouble soon

Rumors indicate that Mercedes AMG wants to present the Mercedes CL 65 AMG at the Geneva Autoshow.
This car has a bi-turbo charged V12 with 600 HP(!) and 1000 Nm(!) torque.
The CL 65 AMG is rumored to look like the CL 55 AMG, no real visible difference. The price tag is unknown yet but is rumored to be around 50000 EUR over the CL 55 AMG price tag.
Performance-wise, the CL 65 AMG will easily outrun the Porsche GT2 and other super sports cars.

Why Porsche might be in trouble? Well, if the CL 65 AMG gets 600 HP, the upcoming SLR will get substantial more power.
Rumors indicate something around 650 HP, even up to 700 HP.

The power war just has started and I'm not sure the new Carrera GT has enough HP to win it.

    Re: insane

merc is finally going powerberzerk!! sure 1,000 Nm of torque sounds fascinating, but where's the point actually?

this is so much HP and torque, that you can't quite bring it on the road without all this drivebywire-stuff aboard. this is even an 2WD car!

a lot of horsepower is used for powering the turbo charger and the rest of the horsepower is (de)regulated by the electronics.

but high power figures are good for marketing and the CEO's ego i suppose.

    Re: insane

My personal guess is that Mercedes wants to wipe out the competitors (incl. Porsche) and especially Tuners like Brabus.
Ask your Mercedes dealer about the "Pascha" system and you might be surprised what you find out. A lot of tuned cars have been repaired under the Mercedes warranty and Mercedes is fed up with that. They "hunt down" tuned cars, no matter how expensive and no matter who's the customer.
Porsche also has some kind of a "black list" but I don't think they were "fanatic" about it up til now.

The CL 65 AMG isn't only good for some CEO but also for reputation. And yes, you're right: my wife's SLK 32 AMG is way too light and not refined enough for the 354 HP power. I have serious traction problems with this car, the ESP jumps in all the time. One reason why on cold days, I prefer the ML55.
I can imagine how the CL 65's ESP jumps in all the time but most customers probably don't care: they drive a 600 HP monster and this is what counts. Sad but true.

    Re: insane

i don't think that this "power offensive" by merc is really a long term threat to porsche or BMW. it currently is -- no doubt. but it shoudn't be a problem for BMW to mount some super- or turbochargers onto their engines, if the market demands it (which it IMO does). it might take some time, though. and they have to say goodbye to their engine philosophy (N/A and high revs @ BMW) or wake up first (porsche)

you're probably right regarding the aftermarket tuners... the only thing what wonders me, is that brabus is merc's official partner for smart tuning...

    cheers; zz
