    Re: [2021] Formula 1

A Formula 3 race from 6 years ago.

The field have names like a who's who of the young guns on the current F1 grid. Almost.

Albon, Leclerc, Russell, Stroll, Giovinazzi. The later two got very intimate a couple times.

All were young, aggressive, thinking they are invincible on track, and they all have the right of way and everyone else needed to make room. Oops. Not happening when everyone else thinks the same.

These kids learned. Now they aren't doing stupid moves like they did from before. That's called proper development up the ranks.

    W Series qualifying crash...

    Re: [2021] Formula 1

Exciting Q1 and Q2, Russell really is the real deal. Norris also. Red Bull is the fastest car, so it shouldn't be a surprise Max would be on top, but the McLaren isn't the fastest thing yet Norris is trading lap times with Max.

Mercedes doesn't seems to have their strategy in order, they need to do better.

Norris had a dangerous crash starting Q3, but man, what a gentleman Vettel is. Some might not like him but he is such a class act. Stopping to check on Norris. Not unlike that time Senna stopped to check on Erik Comas back in 1992, at Spa again no less. I can't see too many on the grid would have spent the time and effort to stop and check. They would have all just drove on.

It would seems after the flooding and the repaving, Eau Rouge isn't the same anymore. Hamilton did mentioned about a weird 'bump' there now. Could that be the reason why the Norris crash and also the W series crash?

    Re: [2021] Formula 1

George Russell. In a Williams. Qualified 2nd. ON THE FRONT ROW!!

As expected, Max is on pole.

Lewis will be 3rd right behind Max.

Would have been nice to see Norris taken pole or at least line up front row with Russell.

    Re: [2021] Formula 1

I was at Spa in late June. We walked Eau Rouge to have a good look at the line and how the track is shaped. There is a bump just before the top, exactly where Norris spinned.  When there the instructor did tell us to watch that bump, that it makes you loose a lot of downforce and to take it straight.

Too bad for Norris. Think he was onto something .

Any driver would of stoped where Vettel stoped. It was red flag,he had to go slowly , was first on sight. It does not take away that he seems the have become much nicer.

    Re: [2021] Formula 1

Will be an interesting start for Max tomorrow.

He has the inside line to turn one, but he will be surrounded by Mercedes engines

Do he cut across to chop off Russell?

Do he stay the line and keep the inside line to turn 1 to keep Hamilton behind him?

Or do he weave back and forth to stay ahead of both Russell and Hamilton?

If he lost the initiative to turn 1, did he learn something from Silverstone, as in pick his fights, some points are better than no points. Plus, he has the faster car and better pit crew, he doesn't need to be ahead on turn 1 lap 1 to win races.

Or do he take a step back on turn 1 if he isn't clearly ahead, and wait for an over take on Kemmel straight? Sector 2 right after is where his car is the strongest, where he can pull out a big margin to protect his lead?

    Re: [2021] Formula 1

On another note, I had a suspicion that Mercedes has signed Russell.

Quite a good pairing, Hamilton can mentor Russell on race craft. Just like how Red Bull resign Perez to teach Max.

Russell is the future face of Mercedes, replacing Hamilton.

It will be quite a different situation than when Mclaren sign Hamilton to partner up with Alonso. Back then. Alonso was still young, still have something to prove even he had won back to back World Championship. This time around, Hamilton has won everything to be won and broke every record to be broken. Nothing else to prove. He is on the twilight of his career, watching the next generation of racers coming up the ranks.

Yes he does have a public preference of keeping Bottas, but that's just proves his loyalty to his long time teammate, nothing more. Toto on the other hand had the hard job of picking Bottas or Russell, both are his drivers, he was the manager of Bottas and watched over his career, same with Russell being a Mercedes young gun, but Bottas isn't getting any younger and he hasn't shown he can be trusted to perform. Russell on the other hand had made a back marker car looks good, always over achieving.

    Re: [2021] Formula 1

I think Toto must be an idiot not to sign Russel, it makes no sense to keep Bottas, sure Hamilton would love that but as you say, Hamilton is at the end of his career and Russel is more than ready for the big show.... Bottas is just not good enough, IMO even not as a number two driver...

    Norris crash with telemetry.

Enters the corner at 298km/hr. In the wet.

    Right after he started braking.......

    1630215909700Screen Shot 2021-08-28 at 10.41.17 PM.png

At this point the brakes have been released, apex-ed. Steering wheel is still pointing at the right direction.

    Screen Shot 2021-08-28 at 10.43.09 PM.png

But here is where the rear starting to go.... Steering wheel going the wrong way now.....

    Screen Shot 2021-08-28 at 10.44.41 PM.png

Full brake again at this point, guess he knows what's coming..

    Screen Shot 2021-08-28 at 10.47.41 PM.png

F1 cars are doing a full 100km/hr over, in the wet, of  what I did in a Cup car in the dry Smiley We brake before turning slight left at the bottom of Eau Rouge onto the curb. F1 cars brake AFTER they take the left to take the curb.

    Re: [2021] Formula 1

Only reason to keep Bottas for 2022 is to guarantee his co-operation for the rest of 2021.

If Russell gets the 2022 gig then perhaps $$ bonuses for the rest of the year for being loyal number 2 will keep Bottas focused.

    Re: [2021] Formula 1

Interesting footage on Norris - these F1 cars are so insane to drive, l guess most of the drivers pretend to play a video game, since downforce etc are sooo much out of this world…with my little croc l need to downshift  before l turn in left into eau rouge to go uphill…heartindecision

    Re: [2021] Formula 1

    More delays on the start.

Even if they starts, it will probably under a safety car start. That means Max would dodged a major bullet as he won't be swamped by cars behind him.

Spoke too soon about Perez's experience, he aquaplaned off. But then again that could have happened to anymore.

If it's a full wet race, I would think Max, Norris, Russell, and even Leclerc would arise to the top. Ultimate car performance is neutralized so it's about reflexes and skills. Bottas would fall even further behind. Riccardo isn't known as a great wet racer but he got experience, Alonso also isn't a good wet racer but he got even more experience. Stroll in the back could get lucky and pass a few cars. Kimi probably can't be bothered. Ocon, don't know enough about him in the wet yet. The two Haas, hmmm, MazeSPINS, Schumacher might even sneak into the top 10 if enough people crash out in front of him.

Who else am I missing? Sainz, he also isn't known as great in the wet but he will manage. Perez, if he gets back in the race he is fine. Giovinazzi, probably slide off somewhere. Latifi same thing. Vettel, the new Vettel in the Aston is more cautious, not as risk taking as the old Vettel, he will get a good result. Gasly, should be a decent enough driver in the wet, might not be spectacular, but he knows what he needed to do. Tsunoda, well he will likely banzai his way to a barrier.

Lastly of course there is Hamilton. He has proven to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest wet racer there is, right up there with Senna. He is always going to be a threat no matter what.

    Re: [2021] Formula 1

Could be the easiest win for Max. An hour left for race time and still haven't start racing.

And Russell would get his first podium.

Great job by the Red Bull crew to fix Perez's car. They really do have THE BEST. No one else's crew are close.

    Re: [2021] Formula 1

Full marks for Red Bull on how creative they are on interpreting rules on getting Perez back into the race. Any other team wouldn't have thought of that. Actually any other team wouldn't be able to repair a car in time anyways.

Finally a race where Horner isn't complaining about how expensive damages are. Of course damages are expensive only if someone else did it, so Perez's damages aren't expensive at all.

Imagine if Max didn't put on a great lap yesterday to beat Russell's time by half a second. Russell could have had his first win. But then again it's Max in the fastest car, of course he can beat that time.

Still can't believe Russell finally got his podium. Fingers were crossed that him and his car would pass scrutineering post race and not had the podium taken away. Knowing his racing luck it could happened

Hamilton saying on radio someone dropped a bomb in the toilet before him was golden!

During the down time, the clip about Mick driving his dad's car was priceless.

Watching the Medical Car sliding around the track at the limit was fun. That C63 wagon can haul ass. Quickly.

Also on the Medical Car, when it goes up the hill from Eau Rouge to Radillon, one can see it got slightly unsettled midway, that's the bump Hamilton was talking about, and where Norris started his crash and also where the W series girls start crashing. The bump definitely isn't there 3 years ago when I raced there. I hope Spa will fix that during the off season.

One down for Max on winning his two home races. Let's see if he can manage the sweep next week.

Boy how good Rusell presents himself in interviews. Polite, gentleman like. Very fitting to the Mercedes image. Like Hamilton, I don't think he ever ever swears in his radio communications.

Give it to Hamilton for saying his mind.

F1 CEO immediately shot that down however.

But given Hamilton's achievement in the sport, he might as well be the only one not afraid to say things. he has earned that right.

    Re: [2021] Formula 1

Even though no race happened, it was an eventful weekend nonetheless! I feel bad for everyone involved that the race consisted of two SC laps after hours of waiting, but I guess the alternative was to not drive at all... at least the cars got out now for people to see and experience them (sort of). I never really had a connection as a fan with Russel, but I really have to give it to him. His emotions and happiness really made him more human and I root for him now as for some of the more easily likable drives (Ricciardo, Russel, etc.) Anyway, coming weekend should be exciting, Zandvoort! Maybe we can all have a sleepover at @Markdsv to watch the race? ;-)

Would have been fun to watch had they let Maylander in the Safety Car out and run with Van Der Merwe in the Medical Car.

That would have been good entertainment for all while everyone is waiting.

Alan van der Merwe in the AMG C63 Wagon ran the most laps, lead the most laps, had the fastest lap even, likely will get voted in as Driver of the Day also. Also had the most overtakes also since everyone else was in pit lane.

By my count he scored the full 26 points at Spa and a clean sweep of the awards.

That puts him just behind Vettel on the drivers' standing for 2021.

Liberty Media should have had some fun with the fans by announcing that to score some positive PR.
