Re: So I am back again (458 or MP4-12C advice needed)

@GT, no ceramics, steel brakes. That car wasn't ordered that way and I found out McLaren itself suggest if I don't track the car there is no advantage of having ceramics as it's heavier than the steel ones. Surprise surprise.

@4trac, I was told Pfaff is in the process of setting up their permanent service center in Vancouver, right now they have a temporary one doing the system upgrades, there aren't that many cars around yet anyway, only 6 in Vancouver soon to be 7(mine) and another 7 in Alberta. None of the 13 have yet to experience any problems. The after sales support issue was one of the first questions I asked and that's what the sales guy told me.

Re: So I am back again (458 or MP4-12C advice needed)

Car transport is schedule to arrive Friday, Saturday latest, I will be back in town Saturday night. So if nothing happens I 'should' be able to take delivery Monday and officially drive it maybe Thursday. Stupid insurance rules means I need to to wait 3 days for them to process, and I can't wait till Thursday to take delivery because I need to take 'delivery' of the car before they can process the insurance. Don't ask me which idiot made that rule, I want to strangle him.

Forecast says it's going to be raining non-stop all of next week, gonna be an interesting drive home in the rain with 600hp and only 2wd.

Re: So I am back again (458 or MP4-12C advice needed)

I can't wait to see your photos and read your driving impressions blush

I think you will be ok on the wet, the traction controll system workes so well on that car !

I can always creep around at 8000rpm in 1st gear around midnight around your area if you wish Tim :)

I live not far off you, around the Riverview Park area so odds are you will see me around.

I bought this car completely long distance, I am away on a trip and communicate with the sales guy which I haven't met yet only through email and fax machine. The car is in one place, the sales guy is thousands miles away from the car and I am another thousands miles away from him, pretty neat what technology can do now. Whatever I don't understand or have questions on the colors and options I visited the local McLaren showroom here. The sales guy here 'thought' he is getting a sale, I feel bad for wasting 45 mins of his time haha.

Re: So I am back again (458 or MP4-12C advice needed)

    ISUK:

It's easy to avoid making any extrovert noise in the 458 when driving through a town. You only have to put the manettino in sport mode and the exhaust valves will stay closed within the rev range needed at lower speeds. If you hear one driving through town it's because the driver has set the manettino to race mode to open the valves earlier. With the valves shut the exhaust is actually pretty quiet for this type of car.

So true. Quite quiet in sport, especially compared to a scud which roars in sport

Finally took delivery of the car, had a short drive home, short on time so I will do a longer post later.

Here is a shot with it and it's room mate, I 'THINK' they will get along............

A super garage but I don't get it. Very similar cars. High powered coupes with out of this world performance. The difference is one may be marginally better than the other.Smiley

There is 'some' practical differences :)

In my neck of the woods, the Turbo S is just like any other 911s, absolutely no one pays a dime of attention to it, if I want to be anonymous, that's the car to be in. Also, the Porsche has awd and right now it has winter tires on, so it's my all season car.

The McLaren is and never will be anonymous, on the short drive home from picking up the car, maybe 10 mins, I already had to answer 'what is it?' 5 times, just from stopping at traffic lights, heck, one time I even had to demonstrate the doors. It's for the time when I feel like being flamboyant. Ferraris and even Lambos don't get as much attention here, no one really knows this car and they don't even know one can buy this car locally.

Re: So I am back again (458 or MP4-12C advice needed)

I can relate to your answer.kiss

Re: So I am back again (458 or MP4-12C advice needed)

A little more detailed driving report, this car REALLY REALLY rides well in normal mode, 'softer' than the Turbo S in normal, yet there is no body roll and the steering is still plenty sharp. In sports mode it rides about the same as the Sports mode in the Porsche, haven't tried track yet. From memory on a 458 test drive this car rides miles better in either mode.

Forward visibility is unreal, better than the 458, I feel like it's even better than the Porsche. Rear view is a wash with the 458, either one is like look through a toilet paper roll, Porsche wins hands down. Mirror view the McLaren wins again with the big mirrors. It is so easy to drive and place, wow. The car is surprisingly small, looks BIG but when I parked it next to the Porsche, it really doesn't occupied that much more space.

Sound, hmm, Porsche loses big time, no contest. Ferrari has that sexy high pitch wail, McLaren has a deeper manly roar, kind of like Aston Martin,  either one is great depending on taste. But I haven't really open it up yet cause of the break in period, 600 miles more :(

McLaren REALLY are crazy about saving weight, the quick guide and the warranty/service booklet is the size of an iphone and there is a tiny slot under the dash for it. The big owners manual I can either store it on the netting in the front trunk or leave it at home.

IRIS touchscreen system, hmm, one word: BAD. the touch screen system is so bad I don't really want to touch it, as it either didn't register the touch or register it on a different location of the screen.

I don't really feel the turbo lag in the 12C, drives like the Turbo S except with less authority on acceleration, but a much longer pedal travel, and the idle creeps is quick, it moves at a surprisingly quick pace. Brake pedal is tiny, and I feel like it's a tad too close to the gas pedal, I stepped on the wrong one once already, need a firm mental note to self.

Will try to see if the weather co-operates and let me take some pictures.

No need to swap, if I really want one I can buy a stacker and stack the 458 and the McLaren. It's just that I am not crazy about owning a Ferrari, I passed up buying one 4 times in a row already.

Re: So I am back again (458 or MP4-12C advice needed)

    Congrats on taking delivery. Enjoy!

Re: So I am back again (458 or MP4-12C advice needed)

Congratulations for this dream garage kiss

I had the same feeling as you when I had the chance to drive the 12C for a day , track included . But I am looking forward to your report on longer drives and time .... and when you will be able to open that throttle to red line indecision

It's a MY12, but since it was shipped from Toronto where the dealership is located, it has received the factory update already, only one on the West Coast as the tech wasn't schedule to fly out West to do the update to the west coast cars till quite a bit later.

Re: So I am back again (458 or MP4-12C advice needed)

Epic ! I know I was more on the 458 side but this MP4 looks really amazing. Thanks for the report I look forward to a bit more about how the car copes with doing normal car stuff instead of reading numbers and track times. I know you're going to have a fantastic time with it. It looks great in you garage next to the TS. Please post more pictures !

I fully understand your answer to nick about the difference as far as impressions go but I'd like to add a bit to that by saying that even if they are close in numbers rear engined and mid engined offer completely different driving feel. So I think having both options in a garage really complement each other.
