My bro bought a TT - Hollow spoke wheel question

My brother just bough a 2002 TT AS/Blk. One of the rear wheels was scuffed so the dealer swapped wheels with another car on the lot which was a 2001 model. After we got the car home I remembered that some of the 2001 models came with solid spoke wheels. So I got to wondering if maybe we unwittingly gave up hollow spokes for solids.

    So a few questions:
    1) How do I tell if the wheels are hollow spoke? I can feel a couple deep ridges behind the spokes - I assume these are the solids, not hollows?
    2) Did all 2002's get hollow spokes or did some get solids?
    3) Are the hollows substantially better than solids (I heard the GT2 gets solids?)
    Thanks for any input.

Re: My bro bought a TT - Hollow spoke wheel question

I try to answer this one but I'm not sure I remember all details correctly.
As far as I remember, there is a specific marking inside the rim to be able to identify the rims. So it shouldn't be a problem to remove the rear wheels and to compare the numbers written on the inside part of the rims. There is another way to identify the hollow spokes but, shame on me, I forgot about it.
As far as I know, all MY 2002 cars have hollow spokes and even around half of the MY 2001. I don't remember the details anymore and it is difficult for me to look it up now.
The hollow spokes are not necessarily better but they're lighter. The GT2 uses solid spokes because of durability on the race track with it's larger rims. The hollow spokes didn't resist to the increased stress in this rim size.

    Thanks RC

    Hi Speedgeek,

ad 1.) if the spokes are round all the way, they are hollows, if you can feel ridges, they are "Turbolook"-wheels.
The other characteristic is the valve: if it's made of steel, you got a hollow-spoke, if it's made of plastic you got "Turbolook"-wheels.
In your brothers case, I'd put my money on the cheaper "Turbolook"-wheels.

ad 2) All tt's (including the 993 tt) got them

ad 3) They just are lighter, which improves the handling of the car.

    Regards
    Wolfgang

If my picture shows up it will be a turbo hollow spoke. Jeff
