One very hot holiday in south of France!!! (Too hot for me!)

    But it was good nonetheless.
I remember one member of the forum asked about driving in France now that repression is much stronger.
I would certainly suggest to stick to the 50kmh limit in town, for obvious safety reasons anyway.
On the motorway, well, it's up to luck really, the favorite spot the cops use now are bridges, but they leave the radar unattended on the bridge with the cops on bikes a few kms further down, by the time you see the camera, it's too late!
Happened to a friend of mine, 240kmh in a 355, but he has an english license so the fine will be big but no confiscation of driving license.
I drove quite fast, coming back from Roanne to Paris on saturday took me less than 4 hours, I didn't drive below 180 and went up to about 240 for a little while, it's up to common sense really, I speed when the roads are empty, otherwise I overtake carefully, I keep my eagles focused, I brake as soon as I see ANY car on the side or on the bridge, and if I get cought, well, tough, the law is the law!
I'm not a huge fan of great speeds anyway, too much wind noise, especially with the cab, and I admit it, I just don't feel 100% confortable above 240, I feel more in control around 160-180, plus it was very windy!
On back country roads, there's still plenty of fun to be had. But again, speed when you're alone, and you see far ahead, slow down when you approach towns and villages and be careful of young mad drivers driving 205GTI and R5 Turbo etc., when they see a nice car, they wanna race and drive like crazy, just let them pass, no big deal and it makes them happy
    Voila!
    Fanch.

    German tourists suck...

...on my last trip to France, I did most of the time around 210-230 kph...in our family SUV, a ML55 AMG.
Disneyland Paris was waiting and our little girl was too excited to get there.
Unfortunately I passed a small Peugeot (or was it a Renault Clio...can't remember anymore) at around 180 kph and this guy had a blue light under his front shield.
He turned it on and followed us for about 20 km but no chance. I wasn't even sure he was after us...he was always so far away, couldn't tell...

But french police shouldn't be underestimated: I heard of a german tourist who's car has been confiscated.
Well, my wife speaks perfectly french and she's blonde...what can happen?

What do you say, Francois? Nice pic.

    Re: German tourists suck...

What do I say about what? Your wife?
It's good that she speacks french of course, always helps I guess.
And no point being rude I suppose even if it's annoying to leave your car on the side and wait for a friend to pick it up, silly but it's the law
If you have a foreign car and get caught speeding by a flash camera, then fine, but if you get caught by the cops on bike, then forget it! And believe me, they're good!!! I know for a fact (I met one of them, really nice guy BTW) that they all own R1s, 998s and Ayabusas outside working hours, so they WILL catch you! And then, well, where ever you're from, you're screwed because you can't drive your car again, and either your passenger takes it or you wait for a friend.
Here's my mobile number:.... Haha! No, I'not that nice.
If you get caught at grand exces de vitesse (let's say well above 200kmh) the car is confiscated on the spot.
Happened to a Swiss about two years ago I think coming back from the Monaco GP, was caught in the Jura on a motorway in a 360 doing 272kmh, he was on the TV news on that evening and they talked about him for a week I think they wanted to set an example, you could see the nice yellow 360 sealed by the police.
The guy got a fine, the car back after a few weeks and was not allowed to drive in France for two years. He had a good lawyer. If he had been french, he would have gone straight to jail. True
    Fanch.

Re: One very hot holiday in south of France!!! (Too hot for me!)

no comment, but it's real, also time and km...snapshot

Re: One very hot holiday in south of France!!! (Too hot for me!)

I love that the water temp is barely warm while you're doing 8k revs and 197mph...

Re: One very hot holiday in south of France!!! (Too hot for me!)

    Grant,
I'm not certain, but it appears to me that the water temp is above 80 degrees and a bit past half way on the gauge. Isn't that warm enough?

Re: One very hot holiday in south of France!!! (Too hot for me!)

This is impressive, but I'm not sure it is wise to push the engine so much when it is still braking in. The car doesn't even have 1000kms and you push it past 8000rpm!
I'm not a mechanic but my mechanic and friend (working and centre Porsche Levallois) told me it does actually make a big difference, as well as waiting for the engine to be warm, which requires on modern Porshe about 15 minutes of driving, should be about 85 degrees.
A well "broken in" engine will always "breathe" better then a badly "broken in" one, same applies to the way you drive the car, town driving (which in the long term dirties the engine) or happy revving track or back roads driving, etc et etc.
This is a great pic Partyboy but have the engine checked and the car tested at the next revision. Just a friendly advice. RC, what do you think?
    Fanch.
PS: I know some of you are thinking an engine is tested for 20 minutes at full revs at the factory, but it doesn't have 1500 kgs of car to tract and THAT makes all the difference, especially with GT3, GT2 and Turbo engines which are more advanced and potentially more fragile (Motorsport origines as opposed to 996 engines destined 100% to road use)

Teflon - Actually it's only about 2/5 on the gauge

I think it's great that the cooling system is so effective (actually probably warmer just sitting in traffic...)

Re: Teflon - Actually it's only about 2/5 on the gauge

we drove 2 houres before, and it never reached a higher temperature...always 85 degrees...cooling system works amazing...

Re: One very hot holiday in south of France!!! (Too hot for me!)

It's a great and unique shot, thanks for sharing.

Anyway with only 900Km on the speedo the internal parts of the engine are "adjusting" to each other, and rev it to 8000rpm doesn't seem to be the best way to perform a good brake in, but I think it's much worst to than drive the car very fast while the engine is still warming up, and this is a much more comun error among 996 TT owners.

    May I add these pictures?

On a nice day in Germany...

    Second Pic

I have a 334 kph picture too but I don't find it now.
Must be somewhere inside an older post of mine.

    Re: Second Pic

I would fully agree with Fanch, whenever feasible and reasonable, just step on it! I own a 996 C2 for 4 months now, my first Porsche. The car keeps on impressing me each day. Bought it 2nd hand. The other option I looked into was a new M3 but I don't regret my final choice for a second. This car has charisma!!

Reading your posts here I was wondering if anyone could share some practical information on radar detectors. There seem to be so many different brands and types. I live in Belgium (where it is illegal to sell, buy and use these devices!)and usually travel around in Benelux, DE, FR, AT and CH. So a multitude of police and speed controls...

Maybe you want to contact CR (Germany) on this issue. His email is cr@rennteam.com .

For European radars, the best is the remote Bel 966R Vector Europa (otherwise know as Stinger Ventura also), its the most sensitive and its remote instal so its practically invisible to cops since its ilegal in Europe except UK. Second come the winshiled mounts, by order of effectiveness: 1* Bel 550 (formerly the Bel 990), 2* Valentine 1, 3* Passport 8500. But becareful of winshield mounts since some windscreens, like the one on my 996, block the microwave signals and render them useless.

They will all cover the Ka (moving radar or stationary) and K (Gatso) freqs which are the most important. Some do not pick up X band but its not needed since its barely in use nowadays and gives most of the false signals, and most pick up Ku band but so far only really used in UK with the MiniGatso's.

Some may pick up laser but unless you get a laser diffuser (Lidatek is the best manufacturer, know as Echo in Europe), cause detecting only laser is useless because by the time you get an alarm, you have alrady been clocked. You need to block the lidar gun with a laser diffuser to get away.
