Launch of 9X7 successors postponed + design changes + more VW parts ?

According to a report from "Automobilwoche" (sorry no link, electronic version not available) Piech/Winterkorn plan significant changes for the 9X7 successor models:

    (1) Both successor models for the 911 and the Boxster shall receive much more VW/AUDI parts.

    (2) Piech is not happy with the design and commands changes of the front / rear for both models (no word on the details of such changes - maybe more part sharing between 911 and Boxster á lá 9X6 Smiley)

    (3) The changes will cause a big delay for the cars' market introductions: 997 successor - probably 2nd HY 2012, Boxster 2013

    (4) "987 R" (anyone recalls the spy pics of the Speedster like Boxster ?) may be cancelled.

    (5) These measures shall create savings of 700 m€

Like always - take it with a grain of salt. The article mentions that Porsche's suppliers are already informed, hence I guess more infos will pop up soon, if Automobilwoche's report tells the truth.

I don't think Porsche can afford to delay the new cars so long...

Re: Launch of 9X7 successors postponed + design changes + more VW parts ?

Read yesterday me too..don't know if is a good or bad news,if is true or not.

Will be interesting to know if the 991 and 981 will have MORE or LESS parts in common.

With all money saved under the skin sharing VW parts, maybe they make much different the cars outside

Don't know what to tell, but one thing is sure i can't wait till 2015/2016 to have the 991 Turbo,so Piech move up and let mod fast the cars

Re: Launch of 9X7 successors postponed + design changes + more VW parts ?

The 987 is the most vulnerable to platform sharing under VW.  The current base Boxster is not much more expensive than the original 986 (probably cheaper in the US given the poor dollar/euro value), yet the current car is light years ahead of its predecessor in almost any parameter one cares to measure. However, sales  have been steadily declining for all the 987s in large part because the market has been saturated after more than ten years of production.  The Cayman was always intended as a niche model that was not designed to have the impact of the roadster. Piech et. al may decide that this market segment needs a clean sheet of paper with a more forward and less retro (i.e. 550) design to appeal to a younger audience not motivated by nostalgia and w/o the means to afford a $50-60K sports car.

Now with the VW takeover of Porsche it is in fashion for this type of news to circulate in the press and on the internet. hard to differentiate between real news and exaggerations of rumours with or without a grain of truth.

Nevertheless, I am one of those (few perhaps for now) with full trust in the VW Group as regards their treatment of Porsche. More so, than with WW and HH.

VW have hardly put a foot wrong in the last 25-30 years and I have lots of respect for them. They have produced some of the top cars in the world from the class-defining Golf to the Veyron "ueberauto". All acquired brands have been treated with respect and astute business logic. Porsche will be the next beneficiary of the VW relationship.

Good news for current owners, espially those with the second generation 997, as this may be the last "true" 911 Porsche. Smiley

Bad news for those customers, who were hoping to get the 991 soon.

    Thanks for sharing P-J. Smiley

Re: Launch of 9X7 successors postponed + design changes + more VW parts ?

So if you believe all these rumors that are flying all over the place, apparently the Cayenne and Panamera are going to be canned after an already mutually beneficial cooperation with VW with the Cayenne/Tuareg pre-merger and the huge development investment on the Panamera already finished, and at the same time the next gen 911 and Boxters are going to be delayed as well because Piech himself does not "like" the front/rear and wants to change it when its already developed by now with the added costs that will bring when they are actually trying to take measures to reduce costs... then I wonder what Porsche dealers are going to be selling in the next years since they will have no cars top offer!

Its logical that after such a big change there is going to be a lot of rumors back and fourth but I'm personally very hesitant to give any much consideration, all that magazines and blogs just care about it to have some gossip/rumors to offer that may attract readers, wether it turns out to be right or not doesn't matter for them, the important part is to offer something in a time that people are very interesting in knowing whats happening behind the curtain.

There is always something newer better although an 09 FL 997TT that can do sub 7.40 at the NBR would be close to perfection.

That's it exactly! Many of these new cars reach a level, where you can hardly think of an improvement, at least performance-wise. Of course there will always be something new, but if it's really better or worth a change, will yet to be seen.
