New Cayenne Facelift "encounter" and my thoughts

Today I had the chance to take a closer look at the Cayenne Facelift, incl. a little ride at night to be able to see the new front- and rear lights better.
I wasn't told what Cayenne this was but I suspect it was the Cayenne S. The funny part was that it looked like the Turbo from behind but like a Cayenne S from the front. Weird. Car had LB license plates, just for the book.

Anyway: I'm a little bit disappointed and even somehow releaved that I've gone for the "old" Cayenne Turbo S.
Putting the new technology aside (which of course is an improvement), the looks of the new Cayenne aren't that nice in reality. The Cayenne looks more "feminine" in my opinion, I'd even say that the "aggressive" look (Turbo) has completely vanished.

The LEDs in the rear lights are only lit up in the upper part, something looking very funny if you see the size of the rear lights which is HUGE. They're somehow too large, can't explain it. The front isn't much different, the new front lights look weird with the "old" Cayenne body (no changes here) and somehow "japanese", something my wife already suspected from the pictures she saw.

Overall, I must say that the new design doesn't look as good as I thought it looks from the pictures. The car had a dark colour, so maybe it looks better with lighter colours.
The "enclosure" of the rear exhaust pipes also doesn't look too nice, it is somehow weird for a SUV. You have to see it yourself LIVE to understand what I mean.

Don't get me wrong, the new Cayenne engines and the improved PASM/PTM and also the new sport button are great and certainly worth going for the facelift. I'm just disappointed to see that it doesn't look as nice as I expected, especially after looking at the available pictures.

The interior is completely the same, I couldn't see much difference. The exhaust note wasn't too audible either, so I suppose there hasn't been changed too much.

No pictures allowed, sorry. Maybe because of the different front compared to the rear.

Re: New Cayenne Facelift "encounter" and my though

    Hi RC,

Those were my thoughts about the looks when I first saw the pics. The new one is definately not an improvement in the looks department over the old model.

Would rather have my "old" CTT any day of the week!

I thought the same when I saw the pics of the Cayenne facelift. Problem is, that they've tried to give the Cayenne a new and different look, without changing the body of the car (at the front that is, at the rear you hardly can see ANY difference, at least the "normal" customer, who isn't that much "into" cars as we are ).
But with their changes at the front Porsche left the typical Porsche look and replaced it with an exchangeable look known from Japanese SUVs.

As Christian said, the new Cayenne may be improved technically and a customer won't regret the buy, but in the looks department it's a step back.

Re: New Cayenne Facelift "encounter" and my though

The marketing department did a good job with the photos, but I always suspected the actual product won't look nearly as good. I too, prefer the old look. I dislike virtually all Japanese designs due to those kind of lights. However, I must say it's not easy to update the Cayenne. There are only so many ways you can change the car's look without being silly. The Japanese headlights would appeal to the typical person(see how many cars are running around with that sort of look), so I suppose it's a "safe bet" from a marketing perspective.

By the way, did I mention I hate Japanese headlights? Lexus and Honda are the worst offenders. I hated the previous generation Mercedes ML for the same reason. It's like "Hey, our cars don't go that fast, so let's create some skewed headlights so that the idiots would be fooled into thinking the car is fast". It's the same mentality of the old Camaro/Trans Am/Mustang having hood scoops, and some eagle painted on the hood.
Having said that, the new Cayenne is still way better than any Japanese design. At least it doesn't just try to look fast; it is fast.

Re: New Cayenne Facelift "encounter" and my thoughts

I thought RC's comment about the facelift looking more "feminine" was an interesting one. I feel weird driving my wife's '06 CS after receiving the following comments about it: From the midde-age female bank drive-thru teller--"What a cute little car! What kind is it?" From a 30-something female UPS truck driver--"That is such an adorable car." And from a mid-20s female teacher at my daughter's school--"I like the Cayenne because it looks so much more tender than the Volkswagen." Yes, she really did use the word tender.

The facelift looks MORE feminine? If so, Porsche is entering the femininity league once only occupied by the Mazda Miata and Lexus RX.

Re: New Cayenne Facelift "encounter" and my thoughts

I think it's entirely deliberate on the part of Porsche. They know only too well how many moms drive their kids to/from school in a Cayenne.

Re: New Cayenne Facelift "encounter" and my thoughts

I think it's deliberate as well, given those interesting statistics on how many female drivers move from a Cayenne into a 911 etc. The Cayenne has boosted the Porsche brand amongst women dramatically.

Re: New Cayenne Facelift "encounter" and my thoughts

wait till you see a 500 horsepower Cayenne Turbo screaming down the school parking lot...you tell me which one looks more feminine, and which one is the toughest bitch of the bunch...

Re: New Cayenne Facelift "encounter" and my thoughts

As usual, RC has summed up my own thoughts better than I could. Didn't like the first pictures of the facelift. Sounds like I'll like it even less in person. Although looks are close to last on my list of factors when buying a vehicle, and I'd still consider buying one for the new technology IF I was in the market, I agree that these changes are a step backward.

My thoughts exactly mike, the facelift wasnt really a big difference from the old, im considering the ml63 now

Re: New Cayenne Facelift "encounter" and my though

anyone know what the sport seats look like in a Cayenne...? I ordered it and not sure what they look like...

Re: New Cayenne Facelift "encounter" and my though

The big improvement is the engine + PDCC and the sport button

My CTT will be showing up in June White/Black

Here's a pic of the sports seat
