    Re: New M4 GTS Announced

I read on another forum that one needs to refill water every 5th time petrol is refilled

Did anyone else read about this?

    Re: New M4 GTS Announced

I think they get some of the water from the AC.

No, my question was seriously meant, for a change. Under normal driving conditions you need to fill water every 5th time petrol is filled? What about a track day? Any risk you stand there with half a petrol tank and no water...

    Re: New M4 GTS Announced

On hard track driving the water tank will last about 1:1 with the fuel tank. For normal usage it's 1:5 as you mentioned. I do like your water collection unit idea though. Should patent it and pitch it to BMW.

    Re: New M4 GTS Announced

My Lancia Delta HF Integrale street car had a water injection (power was around 280 hp), very likely not as sophisticated as the one used by BMW but still...   The water had to be refilled from time to time but I checked the level. I assume the BMW system is much more customer friendly and sophisticated, so it will very likely indicate when to fill up and in a way that you don't have to do this during a track day. Hopefully.

Also, I can imagine that once the temperature in the intercooler rises because the water injection doesn't work anymore, the ECU would switch to a less aggressive program and reduce boost pressure to "protect" the engine.

    Re: New M4 GTS Announced

RC that is exactly correct in that the ECU will restrict the engine when the water runs out.

    Re: New M4 GTS Announced

Oh, I meant that seriously too - I figured, if water injection is THE state of the art to increase performance, then one would not only to take care of some spare oil but also of a bottle of water. I am certainly curious as to how the system works, ie. how much quantity we are talking about and what alternative sources (like an AC) would be used.

Btw, did I already mention that I like the GTS overall, but have my doubts how long this carbon front splitter would last - perhaps it is time for BMW to introduce a front lifter ?

    Re: New M4 GTS Announced

Oh man that wing looks rubbish.  BMW have made some superb-looking concepts recently - IMO they should focus on realising some of them rather than this half-baked effort.  Looks way overpriced, too.

You mean the GT3 RS, the GT3 did the lap in 7:32

I think no manufacturer does a standing start, only rolling starts, but I could be mistaken.

I think Porsche's official time for the 991 GT3 (not RS) is 7:25 and I believe they use standing start.  7:32 could be the Sport Auto Supertest.

Not really impressive. This is a manufacturer test and claim.

Look at Timo Klucks run in a 991.1 Carrera S...much more impressive:

7:38 and this is supposed to be a standard 991.1 Carrera S. Smiley

    Re: New M4 GTS Announced

    Timo:

Ha,ha,ha: Standing start including testing the brakes two times and that fast anyway  devil

I might be wrong here: It does not even look like Timo actually is doing a very good lap, technically - but still a very good laptime!

Definitely two enjoyable videos to watch.

    Re: New M4 GTS Announced

I think it's impressive that the driver is a chassis engineer.

    Re: New M4 GTS Announced

Yes it is. But he seems to be a knowledgable guy:

"The driver is Jörg Weidinger, full time chassis engineer, part time BMW Driving Experience instructor, and two time German and European Hillclimb Champion."

All test engineers are very very good drivers, many with a racing background but not all of them.

If you watch the video which RC has posted above, with Timo driving the Carrera S, you'll notice, that Porsche does a rolling start. The clock starts at T13 (55s in the video) for industry laps.

Interesting - I know Porsche claimed the development lap times for the 918 were all set from standing start:

"The lap time of the Porsche 918 Spyder prototype is one of the best ever recorded for a street-legal vehicle with standard tires. It is particularly impressive as it was achieved from a standing start."
