Re: Simulated/Fake engine noise. Is it really that bad of an idea?

I read in some swiss newspaper as our government has approved  last month to follow the upcoming EU sound noises . They mentioned the ban of any flaps in exhausts .

There is no specific  mention in the article below of flaps used to modify vehicle exhaust noise, but if you read "between the lines" of the reference to "a new and more representative test method to measure sound emissions will ensure that the sound level of vehicles under street driving conditions does not differ from the type-approval test results." :

Do you know what the word Wischiwaschi means? Smiley Sound emissions will be lowered but I am pretty sure that there will be a way to get around certain values for certain cars in a certain way. Engineers always find a way and I am also pretty sure that many car manufacturers don't want their cars to sound too bad, so there may be a solution similar to the CO2 output, some sort of average sound emission value of all cars built by a certain manufacturer or whatever. Ferrari and Co. are well aware of the possible consequences if their cars don't sound "right" anymore. Let's see how inventive they are. Smiley

Some motorcycles are really loud and I don't mean a bit loud (like my Jeep SRT Smiley) but extremely loud. The main road is aprox. half a km away from my house and sometimes at night, I hear a motorcycle accelerate and it is so loud, that I can hear the sound through the walls of the house and it is still too loud. Last weekend, a motorcycle accelerated next to me (I was on a bike with my kids) and it hurt my ears when this guy accelerated, absolutely insane. I'm sorry but this is not a nice sound anymore, this is a health risk. Smiley I am really used to loud exhaust sounds and I am very tolerant but sometimes, too much is too much. So in my opinion, motorcycles are the main problem here and of course...trucks.

It's wishy-washy because it's just a bulletin giving advance notice of planned legislation. Don't count on the legislation itself being wishy-washy.

I'm not against certain "tricks" to improve sound, like mechanical flaps in exhaust systems or even sound symposers to "conduct" sound into the interior but I do not like artificial sound creating systems, like the system which BMW uses for example on some cars. The whole sound of the car, incl. outside the car, should "fit" the car and the interior sound. If a car sounds great from the inside and horrible from the outside, it is a no go for me.

A good analogy would be... a woman with breasts augmentation, nose job, etc is kind faking it but "acceptable" for a date, but a woman who is actually a guy who has had transexual surgery is a NO go!! Smiley
