car flooded - what to do first?

I am posting this on the 997 board because it has the biggest audience, but the issue actually regards my friend's 996.
He has gone on vacation, but a burst pipe resulted in water flooding his underground garage with his 996 in it...The water is now up to knee level, but marks on the car and walls indicate that it was about 1m high at some point. Ignoring the insurance side of the issue, what should he do now to properly save what is saveable. Will this car ever run? Has anyone ever had any experience with a flooded car still being driveable? Any stories and advice welcome.

Re: car flooded - what to do first?

Sadly, it will be written off by the insurance company. Best search for a replacement.

Re: car flooded - what to do first?

    Get a new one.

Re: car flooded - what to do first?

Forget it - take the insurance money and find a replacement - the future costs of replacing components that may be affected just and reveal themselves at a later date isn't worth it.

Electrical issues, ruined interior, engine etc etc etc

Re: car flooded - what to do first?

I remember a guy in Chicago named Joel Goodsen was able to restore a 928 that had rolled into a lake back to pristine condition. It was hard to believe, almost like magic. It took many thousands of dollars, and that was back in the early 80s. I'd imagine today you'd just have to write it off.

Re: car flooded - what to do first?

I accidentally bought a flooded BWM from an unscrupolous dealer who "washed" the title so it appeared it was never flooded.

TAKE THE INSURANCE MONEY AND GIVE THEM THE KEYS.

The issues with flooded cars are just too numerous to mention. Things go wrong in batches and bundles and gremlins pop up and go away making it nearly impossible to diganose.

Re: car flooded - what to do first?

Just to clarify, in the UK there are 4 catagories of insurance "write-offs" ranging from A to D. Cat D cars are repairable as are Cat C - but need a VOSA inspection before going back on the raod. Cat A cars must be crushed. Any flood damaged car will be classified as cat A.

If you're in the UK, the car will be destroyed (assuming he's insured).

sell a flooded car, I'm happy I don't live anywhere near you buddy

Re: car flooded - what to do first?

Call Tom Cruise. His dealership restored his old man's 928 in a day or two.

    "Who's the U-boat commander?"

Re: car flooded - what to do first?

Take the insurance money and run.

Buy your buddy a U-Boat commander captain's hat.
