I took a tour in one of the concordes in exhibition last year, including a visit to the only existing Concorde simulator. Though the air radt was a marvel of engineering and still extremely pleasing to the eye, a lotof it obvisouly dates many decades back. Even if they hadn’t been phased out when they were, they would have been by now. It would have been awesome to have them flying around like the old warbirds though.

I have seen the Washington (Udvar-Hazy) one, the USS Intrepid plane, the Manchester airport one and the Heathrow Airport plane.

Will add the Imperial War Museum at Duxford to the list by the end of July, In the UK for a few weeks for Goodwood, the British GP and RIAT.

David, the Concorde I was in last year is the one at the Brookland's museum (LINK).
If you are into cars and aircraft, it is absolutely worth spending a day at.

The steam gauges really illustrate the age of the aircraft compared with today's glass cockpits even found in small general aviation aircraft. I recalled many years ago reading the obituary of one of the key designers of the Concorde only to note that his birthdate was around the time of the Wright Brothers' first flight in 1903. That really put this plane into perspective. I remember back in 2003, having the opportunity to look at the Spirit of Glen Ellyn, the Wright Flyer replica that flew on the centennial of the first flight. That plane too, was amazing to see close up. The details are phenomenal and the technology staggering for the time period. The Wright Brothers' most significant contributions to aviation were lightweight yet powerful engines and an understanding of how to create a stable and controllable aircraft.

Another interesting tidbit about the Wright Brothers plane, Standard Oil was a major sponsor, suppling the brothers with lubricants and gasoline to help promote uses of gasoline.

The Auto & Technik Museum Sinsheim also has a Concorde on display and the Russian copy as well.

Yes, all take offs were performed with reheat for safety reasons since this required only one performance calculation (instead of two: one with reheat, one without). To bring this into context, those four engines could produce almost half the thrust of an A380 !! Concorde could make the sun rise in the west ;)

Sadly, the crash in France was never the fault of the aircraft and I think grounding (and draining) all Concordes was unjustified. To make a very, very long story short, it was not the metal titanium strip on the runway lost by the Continental Airlines DC-10 that ultimately brought the aircraft down, but a long chain of bad decisions. Regardless, it was a tragedy on many levels for sure :(

Thank you John. I've checked out a few videos of John Hutchinson and really respect him and his expertise. He has a brilliant way of explaining things and is so passionate-- I could listen to him for hours. His book The Wind Beneath my Wings is a wonderful read. Smiley

Upon my last return from Sydney I also bought this little book: Concorde Pocket Manual

It focuses more on the technical side of Concorde, but is still fascinating and full of gems. Plus the book is beautifully made and well put together so it is definitely worth checking out.

Very interestiing but tragic.

As an Air Crash Investugation junkie I do not recall much of that detail being presented on the relevant episode.

I wonder if the plane was still doomed after V1, or with 4 (or 3.5) engines an emergency landing and evacuation would have been possible. Will defer to those more knowledgeable than myself but the fire looked fairly significant.

The beautiful Ogival Wing and its airflow.

V1 is the speed below which the pilot can still safely abort the take off and stop the aircraft within the length of the remaining runway. I think John Hutchinson summed it up best in his interview; there were just so many things that came together which had an accumulative and cascading negative effect. The crew that day operated the aircraft outside its operating limits and violated not only regulations but standard operating procedures; add to that the maintenance error with the wheel spacer, the uneven runway, and the metal debris that carved a bit of tire away and it seems the end was inevitable :(

I’m old school, I prefer more than two engines on airliners. If one engine flames out or needs to be shut down in flight (for whatever reason) when you are far away from an alternate airfield suitable for an emergency landing then you have only one engine left. Smiley

I didn't say I don't have a bad feeling when flying from Europe to the US in an A330...I clearly prefer the A340, A380 or the 747.

However, consider that with more components, four engine aircraft are more prone to have failures than those with two engines. See the Poisson distribution as a demonstrative for reliability. Also consider that during the era of the reciprocating aircraft engine, four engines were preferred since engine failure happened during almost every flight.
