On the 987 S, your choice would be an extra set of 18" winter wheels/tires, whereas you can use 17" winter wheels/tires on the standard 987. Porsche sells those sets through their Tequipment catalogue.
I don't think I'll bother with the British "cold" season but can see the point for Canadian cabriolet owners (if those exist!).

Forget 19" winter tires.
Get 17". You need all the grip you can get, which means soft, highprrofiled narrow tires. On a 19"-tire the rubber will act like ice-rolls - Getting hard and compact, and that's the last thing you'd want in a Boxster, believe me.
I have been thru one winter in my Boxster.
It may look good with 19" winter rolls, but you'll be looking good in a ditch.

I believe you can CAN use 17" rims.
The 986 from 2003 and beyond cannot use 16", but I doubt that the 987's brakes have gotten that big...or are you reallly sure?

The Tequipment catalog lists the available winter and summer wheel packages for the 987. Next to the 17" winter wheels it has an asterisk which says "not suitable for Boxster S".
