Ready to order 997S...recommended dealers in SouthEast?

After lurking and surfing this honorable Board for 9 months, I believe I'm finally ready to order my 997S. I'm still hung up on the color (black, basalt, atlas, red), but have delayed this life-changing event for months. I've visited both Atlanta dealers in the past and plan to shop for the best deal before I order. That being said, do any of you have any recommendations for doing business with the limited dealers that we have in the Southeast USA? I have always ordered my cars in the past and have always negotiated up from invoice. From what I've gleaned from the past few months, it's considerably harder to negotiate with Porsche dealers. Before I suit up for the unpleasantries, do any of you have any recommendations, hints, tips, etc., as well as any recommended (i.e. fair and aggressively minded) referrals, so that I can negotiate the best deal?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

    Best regards,
    Whirl

Re: Ready to order 997S...recommended dealers in SouthEast?

Whirl. I'm in Ocala, FL. I also typically negotiate up from invoice. But for your Porsche, you'll need to negotiate DOWN from MSRP. Same difference in the end. Anyhow, many on here have paid straight MSRP. Some have managed $2-3K off of MSRP. I've yet to hear of anybody on this site that got a deeper discount than me, from my small local-yokel Porsche dealer here in Ocala. If you visited Ocala, you would wonder how we got our own dealer LOL!!! Anyhow, I can't promise that they will allow you the same deal as I got, they may be in a different position or market mindset than they were back in September when I negotiated. I'm just telling you what I got for whatever it's worth, and you can run with it from there. I special-ordered my car, and they honored an agreed-upon $5,000 off MSRP. The dealer is All-Pro Imports (352) 861-0234, and my salesman was Bob Graubman, a real stand-up and down to earth fellow. As I said, who knows where they'll deal to presently. It depends on how business is, and where they are at with their allocations.

Re: Ready to order 997S...recommended dealers in SouthEast?

I'd be more concerned about which dealer service to eventually bring the car to. Oh, and which dealer has enough allocations to get me the car sooner. Since there's no "volume" discounts and youre probably gonna pay MSRP anyway... who cares which dealer you go to. Correct me if I'm missing something here.

Re: Ready to order 997S...recommended dealers in SouthEast?

It's not that black & white. First off, I'm living proof that you can save a decent chunk off of MSRP. Secondly, dealers can trade for allocations. In short, if my dealer has a Cayenne Turbo on the lot that another dealer across the state or across the southeast has a customer ready-to-buy hot-to-trot on, perfect match of colors and options, my dealer would dealer-trade the Cayenne for an open 997 allocation. That's how I got my allocation, and it wasn't all that bad of a wait, 4 1/2 months and the keys were in my hands, special order. Your going to use your local dealer for service in most cases, so that's a moot point. In the southeast, Porsche dealers aren't on every street corner. But where you buy the car, when there's thousands of dollars in play, you can afford a one-time trip to pick up the car if you're saving $5k in the process, that you can put toward more options...

Re: Ready to order 997S...recommended dealers in SouthEast?

Thanks so much for your input. I wish I knew the invoice prices on Porsche options. It would help me in my negotiations, even though I'd be working down from MSRP. I have no problem buying from Ocala. The ride home would be perfect for break in...get me at least 25% closer.

Re: Ready to order 997S...recommended dealers in SouthEast?

I live in B'ham, Alabama and recently bought a 997S from Tom Williams Porsche in B'ham for 2k off list plus wheel crests. I could have gotten more, but I doubt I could have done much better than 3k off. My salesman was Steve Hewitt, easy-going guy, very personable. Others in the same dealership are not so warm. I wouldn't worry about service. Some would differ, but I haven't been given special treatment in dealerships where I bought several cars over the years. I'd be happy to talk/write more about it. jlrhome@bellsouth.net

Geez! How'd you get so smart 69bn? Thanks for the 411.

Re: Ready to order 997S...recommended dealers in SouthEast?

Ellis wouldn't negotiate or come down on price at all. Hennessy was willing to negotiate a couple percent and throw in some extras. Also: great buying experience from Hennessy - wonderful to deal with. Call - Scott Lewis at Hennessy, he's excellent!

You wish you knew the invoice prices for Porsche??? Piece of cake!! Click here on MSN Autos "Price it with options" tool. They give accurate invoice and MSRP, and you can option the car EXACTLY as you want it. http://autos.msn.com/research/autopricer/default.aspx?src=NRES The only kicker is that Porsche does not submit the "invoice" costs for the options, they only give up the spread on the base car. So as you add options, it only adjusts MSRP, the invoice doesn't move. But, it still shows you that the margin between invoice and MSRP on a 997S coupe is exactly $10,023.00. MSRP is $79,100 + $765 dest/del, and Invoice is $69,077 + $765 dest/del. As you add options, you would "suppose" that the margin between Invoice and MSRP would grow, but rule-of-thumb, there's $10,000 bucks between cost and retail, and my sales guy promised me straight-up that there's no invisible "holdback" with Porsche, as there is with most other automakers, especially domestic U.S.. So there's no mystery, no wondering how much extra dough they get kicked back to them after the sale. Basically, you're playing tug-of-war with a $10K bill. My dealer and I tore it in half, and we each kept our half.

I'm the (Atlanta) guy who commented earlier re: Ellis and Hennessy dealer experiences. I'll be delighted to compare notes with you over the phone and can be reached directly @ esrh11@mac.com

Re: Ready to order 997S...recommended dealers in SouthEast?

I am in Atl also. I went with Hennessy. Very professional, seem to be very easy going. I have used Hennessy before with Lexus and very impressed. As for discount, 2K and they did not seem too eager to move much more and it was not that big of a deal for me, plus I jumped in an open slot that someone jumped out of and I get my car in one month vs. who knows and it is an 06. I figure I coud have gotten more of a discount, but how much of a jerk would I have had to be to get it. I don't want the dealership to hate my butt everytime I show up. Ask for Jeff Rappaport.

    Good stuff 69bossnine,

I used www.edmunds.com for a 2005 TSCab MSRP/Invoice comparison. The base price #'s were about $141K MSRP/$123K Invoice. I used the same logic for the options, but even conservatively, if no major difference in options' "MSRP"-to-"Invoice" were assumed, that's about an $18K spread for the dealer, and the most I've been quoted for a "discount" from MSRP is about $4.5K However, I wonder if dealers are getting ready to "wiggle" a bit more-the turbo cab market conceptually might seem "tighter," but with the 997TCab rumored due possibly as early as later next year, perhaps the discounting of the 997TSCab's might therefore increase as the end of this summer approaches. This is probably a different story from the C2S market.

Re: Ready to order 997S...recommended dealers in SouthEast?

Thank you for your reply, JLR. I will add your recommendation to my list. Hopefully I can do as well as you and 69bossnine have. I'm not used to going into it blind.

Re: Ready to order 997S...recommended dealers in SouthEast?

Thank you esrh1 for the lead. Helps to have friends in the neighborhood.

Re: Ready to order 997S...recommended dealers in SouthEast?

Yeah, that's what I was saying, 69bossnine..."invoice prices on Porsche options." It shouldn't be that obscure. If they're like BMW, there's typically a 20-30% markup on options. Again, thanks for all your help.

Re: Ready to order 997S...recommended dealers in SouthEast?

Porsche Nut---I also appreciate your input. I'll let all you guys know how it's coming along when I run the gauntlet next week. Happy 4th to you all!

    Hello Whirl....

I have had generally good experiences with Hendrick Porsche in Charlotte, NC. I purchased a Boxster from them a few years ago, and I currently have a July build 997 C2 on order. I'm not sure what kind of discount they are currently willing to give, but I would expect it to be at least 3% or 4% off MSRP. The sales rep I have worked with there is Dean Aysee, and he has always been very helpful and easy to work with. He can be reached at 704-566-2228. If you need additional info send me a PM.

I like dealing with Champion Porsche in Pompano Beach, FL. They're the worlds largest volume Porsche dealer according to the plaque on the wall. Everyone's very nice and they like to sell cars.
