BBC Top Gear: "Welcome to your new Top Gear presenters!"

    (22 October 2019)

Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome your new Top Gear hosts: Paddy McGuinness and Freddie Flintoff!

Following Matt LeBlanc’s announcement that he will leave TG after the next series, we’re proud to announce that comedian and entertainment host McGuinness, along with former Ashes-winning England cricketer Flintoff, will join Chris Harris for Series 27 of Top Gear TV.

Rory Reid will step down from the main presenting line-up, but will remain part of the Top Gear family, along with Sabine Schmitz. He’ll continue to be the face of TG’s companion show Extra Gear, and will form the heart of a larger digital presence for the show.

“Getting the Top Gear gig is a real honour,” McGuiness said. “To be hosting a show I’ve watched and loved from being a small boy is beyond exciting. Top Gear fans worldwide are a passionate bunch and I consider myself one of them.

“Now let’s start up this Great British machine and see what it can do,” he added.

Flintoff said: “It’s not often you have the chance to do both of your dream jobs, but I’m now lucky enough to say I will have. I’ve always been passionate about cars and I’m so excited to be joining the Top Gear team.”

Chris Harris added: “I think you can tell just how much fun we’re going to have making Top Gear with Paddy and Freddie. They’re both brilliant, natural entertainers – and their mischief mixed with the most exciting cars on the planet is sure to take the show to the next level.

“My dream job just got even better.”

Series 26 of Top Gear TV – Matt LeBlanc’s last as lead host – will debut in early 2019 on BBC Two, followed by Paddy, Freddie and Chris’s all-new Series 27 later in the year.

I love Joey Tribbiani Smiley (Matt LeBlanc) in the NBC sitcom Friends. Thanks for the News TG!

Re: Top Gear presented by Chris Harris...

Many don't know but Joey has also his own show (two seasons only I think). Not bad at all, sad it was canceled.

Joey is also my favorite character, also loved Matt LeBlanc in Episodes (highly recommendable tv show but completely different from Friends).

Episodes was such a good show, fantastic writing. If you liked that you would enjoy Veep.

***** Top Gear TV with Chris Harris: series 31 preview *****

New series starts on Sunday 14 November 2021 at 8pm UK on BBC One...  E0F26BDD-E91B-4EF4-964B-7C4204B9E420.gif

    Top Gear TV feature highlights...

    ***** LAMBORGHINI HURACAN STO *****

Top Gear Series 31 preview 2021

Chris Harris commandeers Silverstone to put the spectacular track-special Huracán to the test. What depths of track talent lurks under that punchy exterior? Also, what’s the car like?

ONCE YOU’VE HAD TRACK YOU’LL NEVER GO BACK

Top Gear Series 31 preview 2021

The steady stream of happy gurgling noises from the Top Gear office indicates that there’s a new 911 GT3 out. The wingy, zingy Porsche is, no question, a truly top-tier trackday special… but what if you want a trackday special that’s not got a Porsche badge on the front, or indeed the rear, or indeed anywhere at all? To answer this at-least-occasionally-asked consumer question, please welcome Team Top Gear, bearing an Alfa Giulia GTAm, Aston Vantage F1 Edition and McLaren 765LT. Day, office, tough, etc.

Now, obviously there was only one way to test this trio of trackday specials: with a trackday. Slightly less obviously, the track chosen by the Top Gear producers was ‘Silverstone', and the day chosen by the Top Gear producers was ‘British Grand Prix race weekend’. How would Team Top Gear fare against a trio of the fastest drivers on the planet: Lando Norris, Sebastian Vettel and Antonio Giovinazzi? Well, obviously they’d lose, because F1 drivers are F1 drivers, and Team Top Gear is two middle-aged men from Lancashire and a middle-aged man from Bristol. But just how badly would they lose?

THAT’S WHY CHUMS STOP AT ICELAND

Top Gear Series 31 preview 2021

With the world finally, slowly emerging from collective house arrest, it seemed time for a big international Top Gear expedition. And there was only one place for it: Iceland. Partly because of Iceland’s extraordinary, rugged landscape. But also because it was basically the only place we could go without having to quarantine for a month on arrival. So, with destination set, the presenters picked some second-hand, broadly unsuitable British cars, and struck out to conquer Iceland’s wild interior.

And so it was that an elegant (though not entirely mechanically sound) Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, and a Vauxhall Chevette (which really didn’t contain many Vauxhall Chevette bits at all), came to find themselves in the land of fire and ice, getting to grips with the local culture by taking part in the traditional Icelandic sport of sand drag racing. And the traditional Icelandic sport of ‘moving really heavy things from one place to another using nothing but brute force’. And the traditional Icelandic sport of ‘eating weird fermented foodstuffs’. And the slightly less traditional Icelandic sport of ‘racing Stig and a monstrous off-road truck to the rim of a volcano’.

    OLD CARS FOR NEW DRIVERS

Top Gear Series 31 preview 2021

You’ve just passed your driving test. Congratulations! Now you need to spend a small fortune buying, and insuring, a very boring city car. Vauxhall Corsa, Hyundai i20, something like that. Worthy, economical, dull. But could our presenters find affordable, insurable cars for new drivers that are more exciting than a newish Vauxhall Corsa?

Well, yes, turns out they definitely could, because there’s no doubt than an old Lada Niva, old VW Beetle and old MGB GT are more interesting than (and, somewhat unexpectedly, just as insurable) as a newish Vauxhall Corsa. But the big question was, though, would these interesting old bangers survive a ‘so you’ve just passed your driving test’ road trip to the Cornish coast: a trip involving quarry-racing, paint-bombs, and playing ‘driving instructor’ to a trio of newly-qualified 17-year-olds? And the other big question was: why aren’t all cars fitted with dual controls as standard?

    A TRIBUTE TO EDDIE

Top Gear Series 31 preview 2021

Eddie Kidd was one of the greatest bikers of them all – an impossibly talented, impossibly handsome stunt rider who performed death-defying feats. But a crash in 1996 ended Eddie’s riding career, leaving him with life-changing injuries. Top Gear pays tribute to this British legend in the only way Top Gear knows how: Paddy McGuinness, wearing leathers, leaping through a ring of fire. Plus some rather more talented bikers leaping over trophy trucks in one of the most spectacular stunt shows you’ll ever see.

    FRED LEARNS TO RACE

Top Gear Series 31 preview 2021

Freddie Flintoff: he’s been a cricketer, a boxer, he’s tackled musical theatre. But now it’s his most terrifying challenge yet: becoming a bona fide racing driver. Can Fred get his race licence in time to team up with Chris for a top-tier endurance race?

WHERE WE’RE GOING WE DON’T NEED ROADS

Top Gear Series 31 preview 2021

Chris Harris celebrates the fortieth anniversary of Doc Brown’s company car by delving into the extraordinary back-story of the DMC DeLorean: a stranger-than-fiction tale of FBI stings, supermodels, drug deals and time travel…

    VICTOR, HE IS MINE!

Top Gear Series 31 preview 2021

Paddy gets to grips with the very very expensive, only-one-ever-built Victor, Aston’s Vulcan-based masterpiece. The Vulcan’s owner gets to grips with a very stiff drink.

    FRED’S LITTLE RED CORVETTE

Top Gear Series 31 preview 2021

Is the new, right-hand drive Corvette C8 an American sports car that actually makes sense in the UK? Top Gear’s resident aficionado of Americana, Frederick Flintoff Jnr III, gets hold of Britain’s first RHD Vette in search of answers.

    WHAM, BAM, CAR-A-VAN

Top Gear Series 31 preview 2021

The humble caravan. Though an unquestionably practical holidaying option – not least in these strange, socially distanced times – there’s no denying it does suffer a bit of an image problem, an image problem possibly exacerbated by certain irresponsible BBC motoring shows.

But let’s not get hung on who, exactly, is to blame for caravanning’s beige, boring image. All that matters is, it’s time to drag the old girl kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Get ready, comrades, for a caravanning revolution, as Paddy, Freddie and Chris each choose their favourite of the new breed of micro-caravans – tiny, perfectly formed travel pods – to hook up to a new electric SUV: specifically the Mercedes EQC, Audi e-tron Sportback and Polestar 2, at least one of which – let’s be honest – isn’t really an SUV at all.

Each armed with a rig that should, in theory, deliver them to a scenic pitch anywhere in the country in clean, green, zero-emissions comfort, our revolutionaries set out to discover if their ‘sports caravans of the future’ can do the caravanning do, with a traditional camping trip in the wilds of Northumberland. A trip that, inevitably, involved being pushed down a big hill in a massive inflatable orb, and eating several of the world’s hottest chillies while attempting to do hot laps around some moorland. As we said, traditional camping trip.

Re: Top Gear presented by Chris Harris...

Top Gear TV is back, and here's your big series 33 preview

Chris Harris, Freddie Flintoff and Paddy McGuinness return to our screens... and as usual, it doesn’t always go quite to plan

    The telly boys are back!

    (28 October 2022)

    TGTV PREVIEW

It’s that time of year when the clock on your dashboard’s about to be an hour out of whack, which must mean a new series of Top Gear is here! Yes, Chris, Freddie and Paddy are back for their seventh series, which means they’ve officially outlasted The Sopranos, and they’re closing in fast on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Big league stuff.

In this jam-packed, marmalade upholstered new series, you’ll find French waxworks, Italian taxi ranks, Thai pickups, German sausages, Croatian hypercars and, of course, a triple-helping of premium British beef. Here’s what’s on the menu...

The new series of Top Gear is on BBC One, every week from Sunday 30 October 2022 at 8pm. Be there! Or watch it on iPlayer! Or both!

    SCHNELL, SCHNELLER, am SCHNELLSTEN!

    TGTV PREVIEW

When we talk about supercars, it’s always about the big numbers. Horsepower, top speed, price. And don’t get us wrong, while we’re all about those numbers being as big as possible – well, the first two, anyhow – shouldn’t supercars be less about the stats, more about the way they make you feel?

    TGTV PREVIEW

So here’s the question. Which supercar out there gives the lucky beggar behind the wheel, the best time? Does bigger really equal better? To find out, Chris, Freddie and Paddy each selected an offering from a different corner on the ol’ supercar spectrum, and headed to Germany for a spot of research.

    TGTV PREVIEW

Paddy went big, with the £3m Pagani Huayra BC Roadster. Freddie went... still pretty big, with the tech heavy new Ferrari 296 GTB. And for Chris’s supercar, he chose the Porsche Cayman GT4 RS, which isn’t actually a supercar at all, but let’s not get hung up on such minor technicalities.

Just the trio, then, for a night time charge down a derestricted section of autobahn, and a final ascent of Austria’s jaw-dropping Grossglockner Pass. Tough, day, office, etc.

    THAI FIGHTERS

    TGTV PREVIEW

Which nation is the most pickup obsessed of them all? If you’re thinking that it’s the US of A, you’re the US of Wrong. Because the pickuppiest country of them all is... Thailand! Per capita, Thais buy more of them than in any other country.

Keen to delve a little deeper into Thailand’s flatbed obsession, the presenters headed on a roadtrip of discovery from the country’s coast to its jungly, mountainous interior. An adventure that would see our brave heroes grappling with the world of pickup truck racing, the intricacies of Bangkok’s tuning scene and the gravity assisted, remarkably painful motorsport of Formula Hmong.

    TGTV PREVIEW

Such an adventure would clearly require pickups fit for the job. Which is why Freddie Flintoff selected a raised, toughened Toyota Hilux. And why

Paddy McGuinness took the dependable local favourite, the Isuzu D-Max. And possibly not why Chris Harris found a local workshop to perform some light modifications to the roof of an old BMW E30...

    LIBERTY, EQUALITY, ELECTRICITY

    TGTV PREVIEW

If you want a tiny, battery powered pod-thing to transport you to spots that regular city cars simply can’t reach (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t, apart from people who live in the country, or people with more than one other person to transport?), you’re spoiled for choice right now.

    TGTV PREVIEW

You could have the Citroen Ami, spiritual successor to the 2CV and almost impossible to tell its rear from its front. You could have the Carver Electric, the Dutch oddball bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘lean and green’. Or you could have the City Transformer, which transforms from ‘narrow city car’ to ‘slightly less narrow’ city car at the push of a button.

    TGTV PREVIEW

But how to decide the best of the bunch? We’re guessing, some sort of weighted matrix, incorporating price, performance, range, footprint, etc? All of which sounded a bit boring, so the team decided to settle the debate with a treasure hunt around Paris. The treasure in question being ‘mildly creepy waxworks’ and the hunting weapon of choice being ‘coloured berets’. Vive la différence!

    RIMAC NEVERA vs PETROL

    TGTV PREVIEW

Chris assembles a) a 2,000bhp Rimac Nevera, b) one of Britain’s longest runways and c) a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, for a drag race like you’ve never seen before. CH isn’t a man often lost for words, but this one might do the trick...

    A TASTE OF STOCK

    TGTV PREVIEW

It’s Flintoff versus F1! But not regular, polite Monaco ’n’ superyachts F1. Oh no. We’re talking the real deal: F1 Stock Cars, Britain’s back-to-basics race series in which, and we quote, “full contact is allowed and encouraged”. Best pack the paracetamol, Fred.

    PAD-CABS PREMIUM

    TGTV PREVIEW

The Ferrari Daytona SP3. Beautiful, but so vanishingly rare that most of us will never come close to seeing one, let alone driving it. So what better way to spread the Daytona love, as it were, than by taking a few new friends for ride in it?

    SPECIAL DELIVERY

    TGTV PREVIEW

Deliveries are big business right now, but what if you want to get into the parcel game on a budget? Chris, Freddie and Paddy each buy a van on the cheap, and set out to tackle Top Gear’s patented Real World Delivery Driver Obstacle Course Complete With Fearsome German Shepherd.

    TEAM TOPGEAR

    TGTV PREVIEW

In just two months, can Paddy take four young motorsport enthusiasts, and get them up to professional race standard, ready to drive a McLaren at Donington in the GT Cup? Time to call in some help from... Lando Norris.

    ONE FOR THE ROAD

    TGTV PREVIEW

At long, long, long, long last, it’s here. Chris heads to Germany to sample the AMG One, Merc’s very much awaited ‘F1 car for the road’. As you may have read, Harris’ Day of AMG fun didn’t exactly go... smoothly.

VERY OFF-ROAD IN THE NEW RANGE ROVER

    TGTV PREVIEW

The new Range Rover. Posher than Hugh Grant riding a thoroughbred, but does it off-road like, um, Hugh Grant riding a thoroughbred? To find out, Paddy and Chris take it to the UK’s toughest off-road event, the King of Britain. Definitely going to end well.
