    New York Auto Show Impressions

Just returning from NY Auto Show press days and will post impressions and pics tomorrow. But for now:

Boxster more impressive than in pics.

Interesting conversation with Porsche racing legend Vic Elford about what makes Porsche great.

Three World car awards for 991 and Porsche brand.

    Cars and colors on display.

    Pronunciation of Macan.

My visit to September 11, 2001 Memorial (with pics).

    More to come...

Re: New York Auto Show Impressions

For me, the NYC show was a disappointment and a success.  Disappointment because Porsche's presence was lackluster--no press conference for the U.S. debuts of the new Boxster and Cayenne Diesel--and an uninspired display of cars.  And for the most part, Porsche floor personnel were uninformed and unenthusiastic.

But a success because I was able to move about easily, and talk at length with past and current Porsche drivers.  In this first post under my header above, I will focus on the lime green metallic Boxster below.  In past pics, I liked the overall design, but was unconvinced about the taillight/spoiler combination.  But seeing the car for the first time, I was immediately convinced that the new rear light design is both attractive and unobtrusive.  It adds just enough flair, without being too "stylish".  It fits well with the fresher overall design of the car.

I also liked the 20" rims, the black headlight surrounds, the more flared rocker panel, the painted rear seat backs, and most particularly the roominess of the interior.  On the last point, the top was open certainly lending to the sense of openness, but still the cabin felt spacious and appealing.  I have never been in the market for a Boxster, but admit to a previous impression that the cabin space was cramped.  Not so.  This is a truly attractive convertible product, well deserving of its reputation as a wonderful handling and refreshing sports car.  Some pics follow, and I will post more later about my conversations with drivers, etc.new york auto show 2012 and memorial 004.jpg

Re: New York Auto Show Impressions

Spent some wonderful time with Vic Elford in the Porsche area at the show.  Vic drove for Porsche in the late 1960's and early 1970's, winning the European Rally title in a 911 in 1967, the 24 hours of Daytona in a 907 in 1968, the Sebring 12 hours in a 917K in 1971.  At LeMans in 1971, he was clocked at 240 mph on the Mulsanne straight, a record that stood for almost  20 years longer.  Known as "quite Vic", he was both a gentleman and a professional.

We shared several stories about racing in those years, and then talked about the current cars and the Porsche brand. Here is a sampling of our conversation:

Question: "What is that makes Porsche special for you?"  Answer: "Whenever you get in and drive a Porsche, you trust it completely.  No other car gives me that feeling of trust and quality."

Question: "Do you think Porsche has devalued its brand by selling Cayennes and Panameras?"  Answer: "Absolutely not.  Every Porsche offered today is perfection with a capital "P".  No other brand even comes close."

Question:  " Which is your favorite Porsche?"  Answer:  " I was greatly impressed by a Panamera diesel I drove recenty in the Italian alps.  And the new 991 is so beautiful.  But for a pure driver's car, I like the Cayman S."

Question:  "I have read that the 917 was a difficult and dangerous car to drive.  Is that true?" Answer:  "Oh no, it was so simple and predictable, even at very high speed."

Question:  "What was your toughest race?"  Answer:  "Driving long shifts in heavy rain at Nurburgring."

As we stood beside the 917L he drove at LeMans, I marveled at how small and low it was, making the Boxster nearby seem huge by comparison.  The dashboard was crude felt, with a single tachometer mounted on top of it, just to the left of the simple steering wheel.  I could not conceive of how it must have felt to Vic at 240 mph.

Here is pic of Vic and me by his car...new york auto show 2012 and memorial 007.jpg

All parts of the brakes are too small! Calipers, discs, this just looks silly!

The unpleasant trend of rims getting bigger and bigger makes brakes, which are fine with 18" wheels, look like girlie brakes. Smiley

Re: New York Auto Show Impressions

Thanks folks, and yes that's me on the right.

Vic is one modest, superlative fellow.  Among his many other victories, he and his fellow drivers won the 84 hour Marathon de la Route on the Nurburgring in a 911S fitted with a--get this--new york auto show 2012 and memorial 039.jpgSportamatic transmission.  He was also awarded The French National Award of Merit for stopping to help an injured driver during the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1972.

Porsche won three awards of its own at the NY Show, receiving the World Cars Award for Best Perfomance Car (an award voted by international journalists), and the Kelley Blue Book Best Performance and the Coolest Brand awards (voted on by auto enthusiasts).

See pic of the World Performance Car Award above.

Re: New York Auto Show Impressions

Porsche (for press days) showed only  a few cars, and was to add some more for public days.  My favorites were the Agate Grey/Carrera Red Carrera S Cab; the Anthracite Brown/Black Coupe, and the Racing Yellow 911 with black rims.  See pics..new york auto show 2012 and memorial 001.jpg

I agree with you. The 991 with 19" wheels looks very adequate and much nicer than the 991S with the 20".

At least on the Boxster you are not obliged to go for this large diameter.

I would never get the 20" rims on a Boxster (although OEM-rims are looking good), except I would go for PCCB, which I probably wouldn't do. Also the standard Carrera S brakes look silly in those big 20"-wheels. The situation is a bit like it has been at Ferrari when they introduced the F430: at that time the CCM still were optional and the standard cast iron brakes looked absolutely girlie. If I remember correctly they had a diameter of 330cm and the F430-wheels were 19". Smiley

    Those aren't girlie brakes.  Smiley

If you want real girlie brakes you've got to get yourself pink calipers.  Smiley

Sometimes I think Rennteam spoiled us rotten.

There is so much Porsche information here that there is really nothing Porsche can do to surprise us in autoshows.

Re: New York Auto Show Impressions

After the show one evening, my wife, son and daughter in law visited the 9/11 Memorial all for the first time. When the attack struck in 2001, my wife was one mile from the Pentagon in Washington, and my son and his wife were just a mile away from the twin towers (they actually saw the second plane hit, and the subsequent fall of the towers).  My daughter in law had previously worked with 13 of the firemen who died during the rescue attempts.  Our visit was understandly filled with emotion.

I won't attempt to explain all we felt during our visit, but I can say with absolute certainty that the Memorial new york auto show 2012 and memorial 022.jpgsplendidly expresses grief, redemption, cleansing, even forgiveness.  The focus was on those lost, and their families foremost--not on anger or revenge.  The response of a great Nation, in my view.

Here are some pics, first of one of the beautiful waterfall pools, then of the Freedom Tower going up nearby, then finally of the only tree that survived that horrible, horrible time.
