    BMW to introduce dual-clutch gearbox

Nothing new I guess, but at least we have a probable launch date:

    Quote:
BMW will debut its first dual-clutch gearbox - dubbed M DCT - in the upcoming M3 Sedan. The sedan is expected to bow at an American auto show, probably either Detroit or Los Angeles. Although the car will also be available with a six-speed manual, the dual-clutch gearbox will use a seven-speed setup.

Re: BMW to introduce dual-clutch gearbox

I have a friend who works at Getrag in the R&D. He just finished a new project on a sensationall gear box of a 507 HP strong car.

He didnt want to tell me any secrets (even not the brand) as he had signed a nonedisclosure.

Anyway - he said, I will going to love this gearbox and it is something completly new for this brand!

So - he sounded very promising and the only car I know with 507 HP is the M5 and M6!

Re: BMW to introduce dual-clutch gearbox

The current issue of AMS refers to a Getrag DSG box which is supposed to be found in powerful cars "such as the Porsche Carrera and BMW M5".

Isn't Porsche's DSG supposed to be developed by Borg Warner?

Re: BMW to introduce dual-clutch gearbox

    Bring it on I say!

    CLK 63Black Series ?

Re: BMW to introduce dual-clutch gearbox

BMW's new tranmission is going to be very interesting. It's a mixture between SMG and DSG. Faster than DSG but smoother than SMG.

Completely new for the brand? 507HP?

    My guess? Mercedes-Benz

Re: BMW to introduce dual-clutch gearbox

Gearbox is something new for the brand, NOT 507 HP.
    507Hp = BMW

Re: BMW to introduce dual-clutch gearbox

    507HP~ = AMG 63 engine.

So far AMG has been pretty content with their Auto slushbloxes. I don't see them using DSG due to their customers.

Re: BMW to introduce dual-clutch gearbox

You are right. BMW will be the first user of new 7 Speed M DCT(or DSG). Others will follow...

Re: BMW to introduce dual-clutch gearbox

Perhaps BMW should first start to figure out how to engineer competent brakes for its alleged sporty cars.....

    Not sure cars w/DSG/paddleshifter boxes will necessarily be faster/smoother/more stable/more robust vs a fast/smart autobox in context of a higher-tq car w/advcd chassis/drivetrain computer networks, e.g., 599....or CL63...or likely SL63BS....

Suspect cars where Luddite boxes are somewhat compatible (like 997GT2/3, 997TT, M3, etc) actually reveal that their chassis/drivetrain networks are primitive tech, a gen or two behind F's.....my understanding is F has been unable to engineer a Luddite box compatible w/599 networks.....and Scud is another gen more advanced....

Re: BMW to introduce dual-clutch gearbox

Now, I will be very, very rude...

First, to call 430 Scuderia technically advanced is well overrated statement in its best... Car with only two(!!!) airbags and aircon that is really, really bad. Xenon lights on 430 are joke in comparison to 997 Turbo xenons. And one last thing-Ferrari is probably the last company that is forcing sequential manuals. Second generation of supersportscars will use some kind of DSG system.

Primitive 997 GT2... It is the first car that is using launch control for maunal gearbox. I like that car very much.

Mercedes AMG models... MERCEDESEIN addict-you are obviously hooked... CL63 is here favourite car amoung known drug dealers and criminals-they like it in black or white... You really need to see influence of SF/London/Monaco to these clowns here-they are driving CL63 and singing their favourite Mile Kitic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNb0PWBQjBI ... People from this area of Europe will know what I am talking about...

Well, Scuderia is the third modification of the Modena, which was designed well back in the nineties. So what do you expect?

Re: BMW to introduce dual-clutch gearbox

Propably M-DCT will be amazing. Faster than a SMG, smoother than DSG.

IMHO the clutch it's way better if you like drifting. It's easier to provoke the sliding with jerky downshifting or to kill the torque if you loose the back end.

But on a front or four wheel drive car semiautomatic transmission is brilliant.

Re: BMW to introduce dual-clutch gearbox

    LOL Kreso, at that song!

You guy have to see how people are turning their heads to look at it - white color and size definetly gets you noticed, haha.

    Very very well said Kreso

Here not far away from you is pretty similar, difference is only that they are driving E classes or previous S classes, black colour, black windows, 4 exhausts or even 2 × 3 exhausts (they smoking only on one side, so left side exhausts are darker), AMG stickers (and you hear diesel engine sound) and Mile Kitic or something like that can be heard 30 m away. You sit in some famous bar and you can see them driving up and down, every 10 minutes into one way. But before you see him, you hear Mile Kitic

Re: BMW to introduce dual-clutch gearbox

    ^_^ LOL x_x

Re: BMW to introduce dual-clutch gearbox

Unfortunately people from your part of the world know what you are talking about but to each it's own I say and the heck with it; let's better focus on enjoying our cars more my friends!

Actually, it's the other way around-F has been unable to engineer its networks compatible with a simple manual gearbox.

And too bad F didn't engineer a new car using the Enzo's engine placed behind the driver where it belongs.

    Sounds just as reasonable.

What I am wondering about is the notion to have the most convenient car on the market. On paper 599 and CL63 are far from each other but they share one significant feature: driver's support.

There's nothing wrong with that, I just kept wondering why this is so important to certain people (read: members). I am rather going the opposite way right now, getting as much pleasure and thrill out of a drive. Current sportscars, and GT2 as much as 430 Scuderia will take this to a whole new level, are so screamingly fast that any serious drive at the limit becomes reckless - wether in your own eyes or the one's of bypassers. A car is only performing up to driver's abilities, instead of changing the cars I'd prefer enhancing abilities.

Re: BMW to introduce dual-clutch gearbox

You are very right on your points Ferdie.
After all most people buy exclusivity with theese cars, and the fact is if cars were not so powerfull and fast but rather more exclusively taylored they would sell just as well.
But performance boost is allways easier to sell to people, we all understand what it is, even if given todays models, from all kind of differnt ranges, it doesn't really matter that much anymore.
