Tired of spyshots... new S5 on order

After what seems like 4 years of RS5 spyshots and rumours (thanks Temm for the latest Smiley ), I have decided not to wait for this car, and order an S5.  Having now driven one twice, I will be quite happy with its power and refinement; it is a very classic GT car with excellent winter and poor conditions ability, and of course styling that will not likely date very quickly.   Speccing an S5 is about as simple as a performance car can be (only 3-4 options!).   I have gone for a fully specced one:

    • drive select
    • nav pkg
    • carbon trim
    • Daytona Grey (special order colour)
    • Magma Red leather

Car is December build, which puts it into Canada ~ February (... on a typical -32 C day...).   I'm sure that when (if?) the RS5 finally arrives in North America - 2011 at best? - I will be tempted... but will leave that decision for another day and fully enjoy the S5 for now.  Happy to be coming back to Audi (last Audi a 1985 5000CD).  Smiley   Will post pics... in 4 months!

Re: Tired of spyshots... new S5 on order

Great choice ! thats exactly how i would spec mine, even the color combo is perfect. i havn't driven the S5 but i drove the A5 and its a terrific car, im sure the S can only be better. enjoy and congrats, remember to post many many pics upon delivery.

Re: Tired of spyshots... new S5 on order

I do not know either to congrats to youSmiley or not... SmileyWhy?

First, new RS5 is ready. Car already have order code and all detalis are known(Smiley). It will be intrduced this year.

Second, from early next year S5 Coupe will finally get 3.0TFSI engine for all markets. 4.2 V8 will be deleted.

I truly hope that you can live with this facts.

Re: Tired of spyshots... new S5 on order

Thanks Kreso, I assure you I had the same conflicting views...I have been on an RS5 "list" with my dealer for a very long time,  but:

    - on engines: I do not like the V6 engine - have driven a new S4 and I think it has lost much of the character of the V8 versions, so for me getting what may be the last year of the S5 in V8 form  is a big plus and not an accident...this car is a classic GT, not a GT3 competitor, so absolute numerical performance is secondary to character in my books.
    - the RS5 may be ready in Europe (so why the many delays? The economy I guess) , but will be even longer delayed over here and I am doubtful NA will see it before 2011
    - I am past the point where I am ready to change cars (you know how that feels... Smiley ) as I have held on to my STi for much longer than I had planned; the thrill of the rally-car ride has mostly worn off!
    - just saw your other post re. RS5 specs... and the "facts" that I might not be able to live with is the possibility of only-S-tronic... you have posted several times on problems with DSG shifting in terms of driver involvement and pleasure, and based on my more limited exposure to several DSG-style systems I tend to agree... however we need to  wait for others to drive the RS5 and report.  I find I am interested to try all sequential-DSG style systems... and then am disappointed when I do, and don't want to be one who only uses auto mode...

And, if the RS5 turns out to be a real scorcher and an Audi classic, my dealer will gladly help me to trade up my S5.... but in the end driving the S5 convinced me that it is a very fun and liveable car, with lots of useable performance in the winter-heavy part of the world that I live in... for 60% of our year an S5 will outperform an M3 just due to traction.  Smiley    Finally, the $30,000 saved can be used to help convince my wife to finally order a Cayman with all the right options... Smiley coming later...

Re: Tired of spyshots... new S5 on order

Congratulations, considering your location and situation this might be a quite reasonable choice.

I´d also choose the V8 model over its successor and, as you said, there still is the option to trade up in one year.

Re: Tired of spyshots... new S5 on order

S5 is an awesome looking car and getting the V8 instead of a 6 is a no-brainer.Smiley

    Congrats.

Re: Tired of spyshots... new S5 on order

Congrat's! Perfect car for our winters.

Great choice! The S5 is a adorable car with a great performance and look. Nothing to go wrong with. The RS5 will not be that much better.

Lars, sorry but you are wrong here.

RS5 will be much, much better car in all drive dynamics terms then current S5. Belive it or not forthcoming S5 with 3.0TFSI V6 is faster on Hockenheim then current V8 version. That is progress.

Re: Tired of spyshots... new S5 on order

The problem is stupid Audi is afraid to import RS models into Canada, thinking the expensive price tag will generate zero sale in Canada.

The superb RS6 is a no go here, only the tame RS4 is available.

Re: Tired of spyshots... new S5 on order

These are the last of the V8's coupes will see for quite a while, or if ever again IMO. I love the new efficient turbos, but they do lack that muscle experience...

Congrats and post pics when its delivered !!!

Exactly Janus - you understand my decision and the slightly modern-retro appeal of the V8 S5.  And Whoopsy is correct that Audi has played God with the RS series into North America, meaning that if I waited there is a real risk that they decide we will never see the RS5, and by the time I knew that, I could no longer order a V8 S5... I have covered my risks here.  Smiley

As I said, I might still decide to upgrade if the RS5 appears in 1-2 years, or I might also decide that if I want a real Nur-machine, I should look for a slightly used Scuderia and keep the S5 as my touring GT.    In the end, most of us really need a stable of machines to be truly happy....Smiley

Re: Tired of spyshots... new S5 on order

    Congrats on your purchase!

the S5 is one beautiful machine and after having had one for a good year and sold it I still miss its refinement - also on the inside! In winter conditions this car is just great. The only place where an M3 would be faster is on a racetrack, the S5 being a bit too soft on suspension etc. But how much time do we spend on a racetrack?  Smiley

    http://www.fourtitude.com/news/publish/Audi_News/article_5495.shtml

Audi S5 with 4.2 V8 Will Continue For Now

It was a bit of a surprise when Audi followed up the introduction of its 4.2-powered S5 with a migration to a 3.0 liter supercharged V6 as standard propulsion for the chassis-sharing S4 sedan. Moving to smaller displacement and forced induction was applauded by both green-minded consumers looking for higher efficiency and S4 enthusiasts romantic for the highly tunable B5 S4 of yore. A 3.0T S5 Cabriolet followed alongside the S4 for 2010 and it was expected that the V8 in the coupe would be replaced with the 3.0T for 2011 though we now know otherwise.

Well-placed sources had hinted to Fourtitude and other publications that the V8 might remain in the near term and this very question was the subject of discussion in Ingolstadt and Audi of America’s Herndon, VA headquarters this year. According to more recent discussions with sources, a decision has been made and the V8 will continue on in the coupe until the car receives its mid-cycle facelift likely no sooner than the 2012 model year.

This website has been touting the merits of the 2010 Audi S5 as of late. Efficiency and affordable tenability are great for the higher volume S4, but the S5 has always impressed us as a well-balanced GT, exuding more luxury and style a step above the BMW 3 series and in some ways more in line with the higher-priced BMW 6 series. In as much, the V8 with all that torque and melodic note simply suits the car better - CAFE standards and fuel prices be damned. Add in new-for-2010 kit like Audi’s Sport Differential and 3G MMI and you have a best of the breed. Under the belief the 4.2’s departure was imminent, we recently likened the 2010 S5 configuration to a fine vintage of wine that should be savored. Fortunately those of like mind when it comes to the S5 coupe will enjoy even more availability.

As mentioned, the A5 and S5 product range will receive a mid-cycle upgrade that may result in the adoption of ‘B9’ chassis designation as a similar evolution did with the B7 back in 2005. Likely the car will receive styling in line with Audi’s latest language most recently expressed with the new A8. At that time we’re told, the change to the 3.0T will be made. At this time we’re not aware of any plan to update the S5 V8 with the latest Valvelift equipped 372 hp / 328 lb-ft 4.2 V8 revealed in the new A8 last week (up 18 hp and 3 lb-ft from the current S5 4.2). As much as we’d like to see the latter carry on in the coupe to help further differentiate market position between S4 and S5, a continued V8 version beyond the facelift would likely compete too much with the planned RS 5 and its 450 hp 4.2 V8 that will first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in the spring.
