    Cayenne/Panamera to be axed?

Report that VAG sees no future for Panamera and Cayenne. See REPORT HERE.

    Excerpt:

"... "VW Group has plenty of SUVs and saloons [sedans] -- it doesn't need Porsche to build them," says the story, which should be music to the ears of Porsche faithful and critics who insist the tiny sports-carmaker did potentially irreparable harm to its brand by pasting the Porsche badge onto heavyweight off-roaders and sedans. ..."

    Re: Cayenne/Panamera to be axed?

IMO, this is a very, very logic and expected decission, but unfortunately we won't have any real information about this in the next years, just because Panamera and Cayenne 2.0 are on the way and both Porsche and VW need these cars to be sold. So I expect both "yes" and "no" to this prospective in the near future...

For me, as a Porsche fanatic, this will be pure heaven!

    Re: Cayenne/Panamera to be axed?

That's what I thought they would do but I received many oppositions Smiley.

Does that make the Panamera a classic soon?

But... does it make sense to announce (or even trial balloon-it) at this time? and possibly hurt Cayenne/Panamera sales?

    Re: Cayenne/Panamera to be axed?

    Tony,

For the die heart Cayenne and Panamera fans it's good news.  They'll probably buy two of each since it will be discontinued.  there was the same dilemma with 928 if you recall.

7 years is a long time, and much water can, and will flow under the bridge.

    Re: Cayenne/Panamera to be axed?

    Great news!

    Re: Cayenne/Panamera to be axed?

IMO this type of news circulate without much thought.

The new Cayenne is ready for launch in 2010 or 2011. Give it a life of 7-8 years and we are almost  in year 2020. Same with the yet to globally launched Panamera.

I am sure that by that time many things will change including the current management of the VW Group. I bet you their time horizon is up to the renewal of their contract of employment rather than the 2020 model of the Cayenne or the Panamera.

I agree.  The new Cayenne and Panamera are both central to Porsche expansion plans for China and other emerging markets.  Why on Earth would VW make Porsche cut off their nose to spite their face by canceling the two products upon which the expansion strategy depends?

One might argue that VW or Audi vehicles could fill those spots, but they don't come with an iconic brand name that helps them sell against direct competition from Lexus, BMW or Mercedes.

One would have to think long and hard about pruning back a growing dealer network in those markets. Why would VW want such a decrease in total sales volume for the group?  They need the volume of cars sold to go up, not down, especially when one considers the amortization of total investments in R&D and facilities costs.  More sales volume cures a whole bunch of overhead related ills.  Fewer sales receipts makes overhead per vehicle worse, no matter how "pure" it makes the brand.  And, Porsche vehicles can be sold for more money per unit volume than VWs or Audis.

One would also have to contend with dealers in the USA who are hard to keep in business on only 911/Boxster products.  Porsche has convinced many USA dealers to invest in expanded facilities to accommodate more sales and service volume from new products.  WIll dealers who are being short changed of their livelihood applaud the demise of Cayenne or Panamera after a short run?  Those that believe it would be all good to have flat-six-only show rooms must consider what the loss of 4-door vehicles would do the dealers' bottom lines and their desire to remain Porsche dealers.

This rumor smells of sour grape revenge or competitive subterfuge, not substance.

    Re: Cayenne/Panamera to be axed?

Mike, VW witnessed what GM did wrong and they are not about to repeat the mistake. They have a ton of SUV's and sedans all competing against one another. Many share the same platform.

They will be able to increase Porsche sales and profitability by focusing on the sport car segment.

Also, why do we assume Porsche and VW dealers will remain separate? The world economy has changed permanently downward. Cost efficiencies are now more critical than ever. The days of ignore the cost to increase market share will not cut it.

    Nick,

Increasing sports car sales revenue enough to make up for the loss of SUV and sedan sales volumes is a fantasy.  Repeat -- a fantasy!  Whatever you're smoking is much better than Bernie Madoff's stash.

Porsche and VW dealer mergers?  From what planet does your mother ship come?

I assume you would also suggest that Ferrari and Chrysler/Fiat dealers merge for the same reasons.  No?

    Re: Cayenne/Panamera to be axed?

Mike, there has been a sea change in consumer buying habits. Conspicuous consumption is out.

Given this new paradigm, the success of the Porsche sedan is unknown. Additionally, the Porsche SUV will face some challenging sales issues given that there are similar vehicles which are cheaper and provide the same quality.

I did not say that Porsche and VW sales dealers will merge but asked the question whether it is a given they would not. Would you have a problem buying a Porsche from a VW/Porsche dealership? Today, I dropped my MiniCooper off at a BMW/MINICooper dealership for service. Not a problem.

Porsche + Audi was the norm then, without any image or identity problems

That's more to my point than the opposite situation to which you referred.
