Why do these awesome automobiles burn oil?

Proud owner of a 997TT. Just wondering if anyone can give some insight as to why they require the need for additional oil. Sometimes as much as 1 quart per 1000 miles. I have 1500 miles on my 997tt only had to add 1/2 quart.

13000 km now...I added one litre oil. Surprisingly low oil consumption for a 911 Turbo. Your car is still pretty new, wait another 1000-2000 miles and check again. Also make sure you NEVER EVER overfill the engine with oil, it could cause serious damage. Up to 1 litre oil per 1000-1500 km are considered normal for the 911 Turbo engines but the new 997 Turbo should eat less oil.

Re: Why do these awesome automobiles burn oil?

the manual said to add oil with the engine off.. Last time I added oil the engine was running.... Do you think this was a bad thing? I wasn't thinking!!!

Re: Why do these awesome automobiles burn oil?

To my amateur way of thinking, opening the crankcase ventilation system while running would be a sure fire way to get a system fault or CE light or something "diagnostic" that may well require an annoying trip to dealer service. I dunno... .

Re: Why do these awesome automobiles burn oil?

Mine arrived 1/2 a qt down, now have 3k miles on it have added about a qt total. Lately the oil gauge hasn't budged. Even after a hard track outing.

Re: Why do these awesome automobiles burn oil?

TT Surgeon I have the exact same experience as you with 3100 miles. I would say 1 qt total or less is about right with my car. I drive it on the aggressive side and would seem strange to have the car burn no oil at all. There are a lot of moving parts that need to be lubricated so its inevitable.

NEVER EVER fill up oil with the engine running!
You need to turn off the engine and wait a couple of minutes. Also try NOT to overfill oil.
Adding oil to a cold engine isn't a very good idea either, if you HAVE to do it (for some reason), fill up a little bit LESS than you think will be needed.

RC--are you saying that in 13,000 kilometers you have only added 1 litre of oil? That's 8,000 miles for us in the States. (I'm averaging 1 quart per 1000 miles).

The factory now states that it is acceptable with them to see the use of a litre every 650 miles.

Re: Why do these awesome automobiles burn oil?

    - Adding oil to the engine while running is a BIG no no. It's an almost surefire way to overfill. You get a false reading becuase as much as 2 quarts is in the engine circulating making it seem as if you have less than what's already in there as you're adding.

    - 911 burn oil is a byproduct of the boxer layout. Oil pools up in the cyclinders when off because gravity pulls downways not sideways.

    - New engines will always have some unusual characteristics until they break in and the rings/valves seat, cyclinder walls score. etc. etc.
A bit higher than average oil consumption/burn off is natural until the period is over. If it continues past this, get it back to Porschwe
