Re: X6 M - short driving report (Rennteam)

    RC:

I Ground clearance is a serious problem too because they usually don't clean the parking lot during the week, only at the weekends when new tourists arrive and/or the tourists travel back home. When it is snowing too hard, they don't clean up the parking lot at all. This is when the air suspension of my Cayenne Turbo S came in pretty handy because the snow was so high that I couldn't even see where the parking lot is ending, making it a pretty dangerous experience.

There is no caught an elevated car ( SUV) will have extra possibilities and get out in more extreme conditions.  I do remember having to shuffle quite a bit on some of the parking lots of rented chalets. With an SUV I would have less work, for sure.

Roads in Switzerland are cleared as fast as they can....so it is only a max of  one to two ours before they clear the roads , any time day and night , when there is heavy snow. So you never get more then 20 cm high fresh now on the road.

Now if you live or go to some chalets that are on 3rd class roads ( very small roads going only to a few houses ) , then it can be harder .

You are lucky in Switzerland. During winter time, I get lucky if I can actually exit my garage without any problems. Even more dangerous is the street down the hill until I hit the main road because it is usually very slippery and my wife already kissed the boardwalk twice over the past couple of years since she wasn't able to stop despite winter tires. The city is only cleaning up main roads (the big ones), everything else is left uncleaned...for environmental reasons. Smiley 4WD is a must during winter over here, although I have to admit that I used my former 997 Carrera S in snow a couple of times and traction was pretty good.

Let me ask you a question in return: if you work the whole week and barely have time to enjoy a GT3 RS for example, if you have a wife and two kids and want to share your spare time with them but at the same time, you want to drive a (family) car which still provides a little bit of the fun you would have with a GT3 RS or any other "true" sportscar, what car would you go for ?

Couldn't agree more! This is exactly why I'm selling my GT3 RS. I cannot drive it as much as I can and I tend to drive a boring diesel car everyday and in my family trips. This is why I'm seriously considering a E90 M3 as a daily car. Discretion and power!!!

    This is the RC way...Smiley

     What ? Sorry but a E90 M3 is not the same thing as a X5 M.

Re: X6 M - short driving report (Rennteam)

Yes, it is not the same.... I don't need a SUV.

Straight-line performance is the same. Smiley

On the track, my X5 M has practically the same performance as the M3 E46.

Guys...this discussion is really senseless as long as those who oppose high performance SUVs never owned one. Personally I don't know a single high performance SUV owner, most of them also own high performance sports cars, who regrets buying his SUV.

Oh wait...there is a friend who sold his Cayenne GTS and went for a BMW 5 series Diesel station wagon instead. The reason was not that he didn't have fun with the GTS but fuel consumption was just too much for him (or better said his eco-friendly wife Smiley).

+1, you guys are really just arguing over who likes (or prefers) what. Some people like suvs because of their utilitary capacities, and if you already need a big car with big space then why not make it have some of the things you already like from a sportscar. Others don't need the space or the clearance so don't see the need to take things from a sportscar and infuse it into a big heavy car. But at the end of the day you'll never agree because its way too subjective.

Exactly Smiley Just because you may have to drive a SUV, that doesn't mean it needs to drive like a bus.

It's been amusing to read this thread - about whether getting a SUV is right or not - since RC is one of the most careful people on RT when choosing exactly the right car for his needs.

Re: X6 M - short driving report (Rennteam)

My dad imported a Grand Cherokee from the US to Holland back in 2003.

It was great, big V8, shitty plastic interior with nice leather seats and great sound, horrible handling and seriously delayed acceleration due to a slow automatic box.

Point of the story is powerful SUVs are FUN TO DRIVE. It's not about needing the clearance for off-roading, it's about knowing you COULD go there. Good for property developers, winter use, exploring and general road use as well due to higher driving position.

We only used the Cherokee "off-road" 4 times. Once to Sweden, once to Austria winter holidays and once to conquer a crazy isolated logging road in the Schwartz Wald.

In holland we drove right up to the beach and avoided a mass pile-up in extreme heavy rain on the highway by swerving into the ditch doing 80km/h... Cherokee wasn't even phased and we came to a controlled stop while everyone around us crashed.

Did we need its ground clearance? Not 99% of the time, it's those 1% are all unforgettable moments which we had only because of that sense of hey WE COULD GO THERE! Then there's the cabin space... again need it? No, but certainly comes in handy at times.

In Canada we got a F350 Supercab. Need it for hauling? No not really. It did come in handy  a couple of times and we have had some amazing memories due to the possibility of knowing you CAN GO THERE.

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

Re: X6 M - short driving report (Rennteam)

BTW that was 4 feet of snow and it's not stuck.... no chains required

Very impressive. I like this kind of truck.

And supplementary to the recent contributions:
As I mentioned before I am often in difficult terrain for professionally reasons.
On this picture, however, you see only a slight degree of difficulty. But in winter there are sometimes still 20-30 cm of snow ADDITIONAL!.
Thats might be pretty difficult for an Audi RS6....Smiley
