It's a no-brainer - take the newer model every time.

Well..., I dunno..., maybe not every time.

I would have kept a 993 when the 996 was introduced to replace it.

Sorry MMD, I should have been more precise. I meant the newer of the two models stated here - i.e. 997 over 996.

Quite agree about 993 over 996 - in fact I also gave the 996 a miss and actually moved away from Porsche until the 997 was released.

Yeah, that makes sense. You pointed out something kinda funny; the situation is reversed today

old model 993 preferred over new model 996

new model 997 preferred over old model 996.

It's like Porsche messed up for ten or more years with the 996.

Sorry, it's just the beer talking, I don't want to stress any 996-era guys out.

My budgets limits to either an 04 or an 05 3.6L coupe. Both models are priced comparably and 05s can be had for only a small premium.

I like the fact that 05s have a marginally better interior and whooping extra 5hps. However, I'm afraid that they might suffer from "theething" problems associated with 1st year model. Are my fears unfounded?
    Thanks

"teething" problems? What are you talking about it..it's just a facelifted 996. That said, the 997 looks much better (inside and out), IMHO.

One more recall to add to the list, the gearbox cables were realigned or something like that on a recall for some early models.
I had a very early 997S and it was fine, a couple of very small matters, and my 2006 4S is even better in this respect but there was nothing about owning an early one which should put you off.
