As much as I envy the German AB and smooth pavement , my condolences re: the German winter ....did my time in NYC and never understood how a car nut could survive 5 mos of yr incompatible w/latest/greatest perf cars....latest-tech perf tires and high tq are truly ideally exploited in SF/LA climate/topography where one can enjoy these great cars 365 d/yr w/summer perf tires....

    Sigh...

Plead guilty....self and several other car nuts quickly realized (early in our careers) that ex-CA locales are largely unacceptable for car nuts....and fled NYC ASAP in our careers for SF/LA b/c of incompatible weather/roads/topography/speed enfcmt, etc in NYC region....

If I were stuck in London from a career standpoint, my first move would be to get a wkend place in Munich to house my interesting cars near interesting roads (or ask to be based in more financially-relevant Frankfurt, esp since the grub in London isn't particularly good anyway ) ....

IMO, world's two greatest, economically-relevant, civilized locales for car nuts are prob SF and Munich....

I guess it's a matter of taste. Personally I'd go for the MB 63 AMG, but I'd also consider the Audi S6 or S8.

Sold the M5 after 2 years ownership, went for the S8, could not be happier. As a total package, I like the S8 so much better than the M5 although less evo. Had many breakdowns in the M5, and 2008's still do break down.

100% agreed. The S8 (or, alternatively, W12) is much more refined than the M5.

Also, the M5 is not that much quicker than the S8 or W12 in real life. The M5/M6 gains about 150m up to the Audi's top speed. I can easily live with those 150m while enjoying the high-end Audi interior and the excellent B&O sound system

P.S.: If you still prefer a 5 series I would also take a very close look at Alpina's B5. I would always prefer the B5 to the M5.

Though I think the "problem" with the Audi A8 W12 is that they've made it so refined it's plain boring. Remember driving one a couple of years ago and it didn't give me any thrills... The S8 however, it's got more character.

The Alpina B5 - very good alternative to the M5

Well, I don't tink the W12 is boring at all! You can drive cars like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Ruf just before doing a 400km trip in the W12 and you will just love the car. The W12 is a true technological achievement

However, make sure to test the short wheel base of the W12. The SWB has a sporty suspension setup, a more direct steering and a shorter gearing (slightly better acceleration). Believe me, it is one of the best cars I have ever owned/driven

P.S.: The S8 feels 99% as the W12 SWB. The only major difference (apart from styling) is the engine sound. The W12 is very, very smooth. The S8 sounds like a big block

Aha, well, maybe I'd like the SWB version better, because I drove the LWB. But unfortunately I didn't like the engine very much, very powerful and smooth - I'd just prefer something with a bit more edge...

What? You don't like fish and chips? You don't like half cooked, chewy bacon for breakfast?

If you want decent fish and chips you need to go to Whitby or Grimsby, not London

Exactly, DC In London you better have dinner with Easy-Rider who can show you some nice places with great authentic Asian food

Re: M5 to replace my 997S

I test drove the M5 a short while back, since I could get a good deal. But after two hours of test drive, I felt really sort of after 10 hours drive. the car is really damn fast, the handling is very good for a "limo". But its a way to hard. I drove for almost 6 years a 996 cab, and I never felt that the car is to comfortable or to hard, it was just perfectly balanced. I also test drove the 997 Turbo a while back, and It felt much "softer".
The DSG is also something that makes fun in the begining, but after a while it gets some sort of annoying.(IMO)
Well I think its not a real good family car, it makes a lot of fun, and accelerates in damn fast in every rev range, but you must like or be able to live with the hardness of the supspension and the DSG.
I think for fast family daliy drivers, AMG offers the better compromisse. Of course you must option the LSD from the AMG Performance Package. Without it, no AMG would make sense IMO.

Re: M5 to replace my 997S

Tried the S8 - sorry, nice car but not what Im looking for. Dont need to be cosseted in a luxurious car which is also quick. All Im looking for is a car that goes like hell but can take a baby seat, and ideally isnt too conspicuous...which is why I keep going back to the M5 as the one to get. Got to make a call shortly, appreciate everyones input here, great to see different views around this subject.

Re: M5 to replace my 997S

M5 seems to fit your criteria, good luck with your decision!

As a matter of interest what lease deal do you get on the M5.

Re: M5 to replace my 997S

Still working the numbers but over 24 months, 10k miles/year, no cash down, 73% residual, $1639/month. Reduces to $1573/month if I do to 36 months at 10k miles/year.
