    997 S Ring laptime.

    Do you really care what the specifications are on the new 997 S if it laps the Ring in 7.56 ?

    I don't, I already know I have to get one.

    A full 20,8Km lap in 7:56 with street tires? I don't think I would believe that. Thats what none other than Walter Rohl himself did in 2000 with the 380HP & much more agressive track chasis, suspension, engine & aerodinamic setup MK1 GT3. Even if the 997S cheated with R-compound street tires it would be hard to believe, its not more powerful or lighter & its not more radical in track setup than a GT3. I think 8:05 is probably going to be more like it, which is still be an incredible lap time for a car of such specs and a significant improvement over the 996.

    Based on the rumors, the 997 "S" models should have more HP than the GT3 MK I so it would be possible. Rumor has it that the "S" models may have 370 to 380 HP which puts them in par with the current GT3 (GT3 MK II).

    Actually, the GT3 MkI had only 360hp and less torque than what the 3.8L 997S should have. I am very skeptical about the time also though, unless they were using Michelin Pilot Sport Cups or similar tires.

    oops, yes that was 360HP not 380HP
    But still even 10-20 more HP and a bit more torque is not going to make up for all the rest and will probably will be nutralised by the weight gain over thje Mk1 GT3, look at the 3.4L vs 3.6L C2 for example.

    BTW 7:56 is what the 2004 Z06 did in the ring.

    ahhh, thats a different matter. Answer: absolutely not, as a matter of fact even better IMO. If HP is lower than expected and still achieved such time it means weight had to go down and the setup more aggressive which in my book is much more important than te HP figure alone

    But again, from what we know of the 997, that lap time is either not a full 20.8km lap or simply not real.

    I'm interested in the final result, the driving experience. I know some people criticize Porsche for not playing the horsepower game, but under the hood numbers are academic. All that matters is what happens when you take it out on the road or track. And these kind of numbers suggest, in my mind, two things: first, that Porsche is correct in their approach and, second, that they are continuing to build cars for enthusiasts.

    Of course, MY TIME around the Ring might vary significantly, but that would just mean I'd have more time in the seat to enjoy the ride.

    Time to start stuffing the piggy bank for the new S.

    Ok, so if this 355 HP normal 997 turns in 7.56 , how they can justify the "weak" performance of the 996 GT3 with 380 HP in comparison of course to the 997S?

    But, I see it says 30kg heavier than the 996 C2. Hmmm...

    Weak performance? The "old" GT3 with 360 HP did the Nordschleife in 7 min. 57 sec. as far as I remember.
    The new one did it in 7 min. 54 sec., I agree this is not a huge improvement. But still very fast.
    The GT3 RS with the same engine achieved 7 min. 47 seconds.

    More interesting is actually Hockenheim (Kleiner Kurs):
    "Old" GT3 with 360 HP: 1.14,9 min.
    "New" GT3 with 381 HP: 1.13,2 min.
    GT3 RS with 381 HP: 1.11,8 min.
    Carrera GT with 612 HP: 1.08,6 min.

    I suppose the new 997 S should be in the 1.15 min range which would be quite impressive (996 C2: 1.17,1 min).

    Why would anyone want a GT3 then? It seems that everytime I get close to getting a GT3, I read something like this and wonder why I would bother:)

    i suppose that 997 S has the LSD differential ,michelin "cup" tires ,and so more......

    7.56 lap at the Ring on a car w/ less hp and more weight and a softer suspension than the GT3??? That time is suspect at best...

    That question has never crossed my mind...The GT3 is awesome period and there is no way the 997S out of the box is going to come close to surpassing it. Guess we will just have to wait until the car ACTUALLY comes out and is driven around the ring...Anything less is pure exaggerated speculation, imo...

    By the way...The actual HP for the Mk2 Gt3 is close to 400hp at the crank and this has been verified by many people who have dynoed their cars...Actual rear wheel hp stock verified on rolling roads is 350rwhp...

    The NSX-R did a 8:09 lap time on the Nordschleife.

    The GT3 Mk I was told to do a 7:56 with Walter Röhrl.

    In SportAuto they did a 8:03.

    So if Röhrl does a 7:56 in a 997 S the time of SportAuto (we always compare SportAuto times) should be around 8:03 again.

    Not quite right. The tested GT3 MKI had a broken drive train part ("Antriebswelle") and was apparently technically defective when doing the test. They wanted to repeat the test later on (because they knew that Walter Roehrl did better) but didn't find the time to do it. Believe it or not...

    That lap time is ridiculous. No amount of wishful thinking or pontificating over "evolution" is going to make those lap times believable. Anyone ever study Physics?

    Also, why is everyone treating these reputed S specs as the gospel? How does anyone know they are the real deal and set in stone? What's the source?

    997 s is not suposed to be a tack car just like the c2 c4 warent soposed to be, it will be largely a every day user (there are exeptions), but the point is that for 90% of the custemers of the c2,c4 the lap time is irelevant, The only thing they would care aboud is the improvements over the c2,c4, Like roud handeling, aceleration, bracking, comfort, etc. IMO the 997 will be better in every aspect then its predesesors, and the lap times are irelevant.
    IMO th 7:56 may be posible with walter rohl at the weel but a magazine test will brobably show 8:05 figure

    How come you guys dont make up these excuses when a ferrari laps the ring purly. The lap time is 8:03, until they do it in less, it will stay 8:03
