996 Turbo intermittently smoking on startup

I've had an early 2001 996 Turbo, since new, that sends out a large cloud of blue smoke on startup. It occurs about one out of 10 to 15 starts and lasts for only a few seconds. The car runs fine but it's VERY embarrassing!

The car has spent weeks and weeks with the dealer and this has never been solved. They tell me that they can't find anything wrong... PLEASE HELP!!!

Re: 996 Turbo intermittently smoking on startup

i have the same thing on my GT2 but that appears after a long time without working only (3 or 4 weeks).

This is VERY typical of 996 Turbos. Don't waste another second with your dealer over this.

Do you idle cool-down your turbos after driving? This can reduce the number of smokey starts.

Re: 996 Turbo intermittently smoking on startup

In my case it's just as likely to happen after being parked for an hour as after not being used for two weeks. And it's a large cloud of light blue smoke. VERY noticable!

    Thanks for your input! JGM

Re: 996 Turbo intermittently smoking on startup

I'm sorry, but what exactly do you mean by "idle cool-down"? I don't specifically let the car idle before shutting it down but the smoke cloud is just as likely to happen after a 35 mph drive of 3 miles as after a highway run.

It either happens as a big cloud of blue smoke or nothing at all.

Thanks so much for your input!

rest assured that the rings are allowing a bit-a lubrication into the cylinders. A good running motor should burn a little oil.

    (mine acts similarly)

Re: 996 Turbo intermittently smoking on startup

Idle cool down is important for turbo cars, it means after a hard drive, letting the car idle for at least a minute or two before shutting it off, that way the hot oil inside the turbos can circulate and reduce heat, thereby improving the longevity of all the components.

Also, it is perfectly normal for a flat-6 engine to emit some smoke upon start up.

I idle my turbo 2 minutes before I shut it down. I do this even after a short drive. The objective is to allow the turbos to spin down to a reasonable RPM prior to shutting down the engine.

Re: 996 Turbo intermittently smoking on startup

My 01 does the same with only 37k miles on it. As stated above, if you idle for a full minute after driving, you will dramatically reduce the smoke at atartup.

Re: 996 Turbo intermittently smoking on startup

I can confirm, some blue smoke occasionally upon starting is nothing problematic on 996 Turbos.

Re: 996 Turbo intermittently smoking on startup

my 997 turbo does it too and it is quite embarassing. I will try to let it idle for 30 sec or 1 min and see.

Re: 996 Turbo intermittently smoking on startup

New owner (04 996T X50) - same concern, but glad to see it's normal.

Re: 996 Turbo intermittently smoking on startup

I'm having the same problem now with my 2001 turbo. While starting up sometimes, it produces white smoke. After driving a first left corner and going on the throttle after it produces white smoke heavy noticable behinde the car. probably other car drivers are scared behind. It never happens after right turns, and after a minute it disapears and never comes back. You can fully drive after and no smoke is produced at all.
If you stop for some minutes and start again it does it after the first left corner again but only once. after the car runs totally normal. The smoke does not smell like burning oil or something.

I don't know if this is normal, it is the first day in my first turbo. Does anyone have any help?

    cheers Michael

Re: 996 Turbo intermittently smoking on startup

A day later the car started without smoke at all and also driving was smokeless.

The car had a big service a week ago. Could it be possible, that too much oil is in it and now burned out? (the gauge shows oil over the max digitaly)

Re: 996 Turbo intermittently smoking on startup

obviously it is the service. The car now runs fine. I was doing two mountain passes. No smoke anymore, only sometimes at startup for a second.

Mechanic told me, that the turbos are laying in a little oil collector. He was putting a little bit too much oil in because of the digital gauge. While standing still, there was went too much oil in the collector and the turbo smoked at the beginning. Oil can also smoke white, only dirty oil smokes in colors. total fresh and new oil smokes white, like in a formula one car, oil also smokes more or less white.

In my case definitely there was too much oil in and burned out now over the last 200 kilometers. now the car behaves normal as I expect.

Enjoy the magic of the 996 TT, this is a pretty normal thing, forget about the dealer(he should know better, I bet he contacted Porsche and they told him).

Re: 996 Turbo intermittently smoking on startup

thats funny mine was smoking alot after the service but now that the digital meter is howing the oil has gone down one marker the car has stopped doing it.

i dont know how the dealer is measuring oil level in the engine. if they are using the in dash meter then they could possibly be over filling.
