    GT3 roll at The Ring

If this is a repost, my apologies.

Re: GT3 roll at The Ring

It is, but you're forgiven. I'm going there tomorrow, so I hope it will not affect my day!

Re: GT3 roll at The Ring

    That was painful to watch.

I also didn't appreciate the mindless comments made by my British compatriots who filmed it. Accidents can happen. I didn't like their childish sarcasm and the way they were revelling in another's misfortune.

Re: GT3 roll at The Ring

This has been said before, but what was more worrying was the fool who decided to do an emergency stop in the middle of a race track, causing confusion and pull over on a bend and get out to help him. Now I'm not knocking the fact he went to help but of all the stupid things to do. Oh yeah, and the other guy running into the middle of the road "on the bend" flagging other drivers. "Fool!". Most people will have been looking at the up turned GT3 and could have killed the [beep].

Re: GT3 roll at The Ring

I think it's good to watch if only to appreciate how easily and quickly this can happen - the line was good and he nailed the apex (perhaps a little early), as that happens, he gets some oversteer, which at that speed probably felt quite scary, then too much counter and probably braking at the same time, and then big time oversteer the other way. My guess is that without the braking, he probably would have made it. In retrospect, the braking might have best been saved for the little straight before the next turn. Of course, had he braked more before the turn (as the commentators were expecting), this could also have been avoided. Driving on the edge.

Grass tracks without walls are invaluable. That car would not have been written off (which I assumde it was) if that wall hadn't been there.

Re: GT3 roll at The Ring

Watching what happened makes me want to do the PDE even more. IMO, I think a more experienced driver would have possibly saved the day.

Re: GT3 roll at The Ring

There is another video with a better angle showing what happens when you come over the brow. The car goes light and any misallignment of the steering causes under steer initially etc etc...on this vid, the GT3 gets it right though. Can you imagine, having to accelerate to induce over steer to get out of the initial under steer which causes the problem and at that speed. Scary...

Re: GT3 roll at The Ring

We have some very knowledgeable (track) drivers here. I am not one. Does anyone think that IF this Porsche had been AWD, it would have made any difference in this loss of control/crash? Just curious.

Re: GT3 roll at The Ring

The main problem with this crash (other than being off line and breaking at the wrong point) was that the driver held the correction waaaay too long, so when the wheels got traction again, they were pointed in the wrong direction and resulted in a snap oversteer. AWD will not overrule the laws of physics, i.e. the rear would have broken lose anyway.

Yes an AWD Turbo with PSM would probably have stayed on the track in this situation. With the wheels down.

I drove my turbo at the Ring in Dec 05 in icy rain and was saved many times by the AWD and PSM when the back got loose. Mine was the only car on the track. No RWD 911 would be safe in those conditions at speed.

Nevertheless I will never buy another AWD 911 (I now head south for the winter). My next car will be a 997 GT3.

I'd still give 150 euros for it

Could use a wheel. Would make a nice coffe table.

Re: GT3 roll at The Ring

It's difficult to judge just by a video but, especially after comparing with the second film, IMO the corner entry speed was simply too high.

That is exactly why I thought. He was much, much too fast!

Everyone who has made a video might have made the following experience: Normally a lap looks slow on the video. But if it looks fast on the video - and it does - it is much, much faster in reality!

If you listen carefully you can also hear that he is breaking hard already when entering (!) the curve.

I don't believe that this accident "just happened" and could have had happened to anyone, because the GT3 is such a tricky car. In my opinion he was simply too fast!

What I don't like at this video is that there is no (!) modern warning system on the Nordschleife. The Nürburgring GmbH just has increased the price about 20% saying they invest so much money in safety. That is simply BS. A lot of people could have stayed alive if they did so.

Re: GT3 roll at The Ring

100% poor driving that's all. It's not like the track or the wall hit him. No AWD or PSM would saved him/her.
This is simply the definition of a track accident. A great example we can all appreciate.
I do not think the speed was too high, but it was for this driver. The point is - this could happen to anyone of us and when it does, you know it is 100% your fault so deal with it and learn from it. If you fail to see this then you have other issues. Learn your limits.
A track with trees and walls may not be the best place to learn to slide a GT3.

Re: GT3 roll at The Ring

Just watch the video, he seems to lose it immediately as he drops down the slope (3 seconds into the clip). The back end steps out to the right after he gets the steering in the wrong position as the front end goes light. An over correction at this point gets him out of shape and whilst he is recovering he doesn't lose any speed, this ultimately upsets the balance of the car and the rest is history.

Nordschleife corners are notoriously unforgiving. For those whose entry speed exceeds their level of skill or track knowledge, the Armco awaits. Crashes are very frequent events at the Ring.

But PSM and AWD might have saved him. Turbos are safer than GT3s when the rear gets badly loose on entry due to driver error.

Re: GT3 roll at The Ring

Well to me, this crach tell's me that who ever driver or pilot you are or whatever mistake due to speed limit, to wrong line, to late break etc... you did, it's a lesson to learn. Isn't there a saying witch says. "it's by doing mistake that we learn"
Luckly the driver get out of the car save. I promess you that next time at the same place, he will get thru the corner without craching

Re: GT3 roll at The Ring

    That's one expensive mistake though.

I would prefer to advance my skill slowly step by step in a safe way rather than having a bad accident which terrifies me into not pushing the limits in future.

Re: GT3 roll at The Ring

He was trying too hard I think. At the beginning of the video one of the spectators says something like, "he's a flyer, watch him!", then immediately says "BRAKES!" as if he knows he's going to fast.
