    oil

    Can anyone tell me what oil they are using to top up on the 997 GT3 ?
    I need to top mine up and i have some Mobil 1 ow-40 SuperSyn which i used in my 997s and the manual says that i can use any approved oil .

    I have a case of Mobil 1 (0-40) Tri-Synthetic, which has been sitting in my garage for a number of years. Any problems with that, do you think? Is the SuperSynthetic a newer/different product?

    FWIW,

    I had six quarts of "BMW Synthetic, blah blah," oil bought for my new 2001 BMW. I then got a 2004 M3 and thought I could use that oil since the viscosity was correct. I call dealer service and they told me, in no uncertain terms, it would definitely be the wrong oil for the new M3. Imagine..., "BMW" oil that you can't put in all BMWs.

    My point? Seems like you should use the exact oil recommended by Porsche.

    Sure, I would use the exact oil recommended by the manufacturer too (since one simply can't afford to take any chances with the engine given all the horror stories one reads on the internet) but I can't help feeling that there is some advantage being taken of naive customers as well.

    BTW, I wouldn't use oil which is more than 6 months old in my car. I wouldn't be confident about its viscosity over time even if it's fully synthetic. I prefer to buy small quantities regularly rather than larger quantities less frequently.

    always nice when the recommended product in this case mobil 1 - 0/40 is top notch to begin with... no special manufactuer re-label bs
